Have you refinished/restained furniture?

Maybe you can tell me how difficult it is? I've never done anything like that before, but maybe it's something I can do. (I will also start looking around at professional furniture strippers and refinishers...)

I have two not-so-large living room tables, wood tops, metal legs that are detachable, so really it's only the tops to redo. The tops are very basic: there are no curlicues or ridges or carved-in parts; they have what I believe is called a "waterfall bullnose" edge. I don't know what kind of wood they are made of. When I purchased them, the company (can't find any sign it's still in existence) offered a range of stains and colors, and I wanted something "different" so I chose a medium denim-blue finish. That was about 9 years ago, and now I want something more neutral and natural, like a basic maple finish.

What advice can you offer?
