Maybe slightly off topic: Dinner bowls?

Hi. Just curious if you make dinner a large veggie packed salad, what do you serve it in? I'm on the hunt for new dinner sized salad bowls and failing miserably. Maybe I should be looking for smallish shallow serving bowls or rimmed plates?

Thanks for your suggestions!

We have these larger Fiesta pasta bowls and they are very nice for salads.

Warning that they are too large to microwave in most microwaves.

But ideal for large salads or pasta.

I don't use bowls at all for my tossed salads. If I'm serving a salad as the main course - like caesar salad with grilled chicken or shrimp - I simply use a dinner plate. If it's a side dish then I use a luncheon plate.

I started doing this a few years ago because my bowls are very deep and they take up too much space in the dishwasher. The other advantage of using a regular plate is that the dressing doesn't pool in the bottom of the bowl.

I use pasta bowls for many dinner items including salads.

These are my shallow bowls - Denby Jet - you can get them as seconds from Shepherd Hills. They're the perfect size for a main-course salad.

I have an assortment of wooden bowls that I use for large family dinners. You can find about any size you could ever need in wood.

Julie and bumbles- Pasta bowls! I should have thought of that! Thanks for the suggestions!

Sj- I should have looked at denby. Our collection of dinnerware at lake house is denby. I love it. Not sure I would love seconds though, I'm a tad neurotic and obvious blemishes may bother me. Are the blemishes in glaze noticeable? The price of seconds is tempting!

MMM- wooden bowls. Never considered. Would be great as single purpose. But, I think I like the idea of multipurpose bowls: pasta, salads, oven safe, etc.

I have corelle ware and they call it a pasta bowl, but I've always called it a soup plate...about the size of a dinner plate, but with edges...we use it for pasta and stews and stoups.

Crate and Barrel has what they call "low bowls". They are perfect for pasta, big salads, soups, stews, etc. I have them in the Cafeware pattern; not sure if they carry that pattern anymore, but they still carry low bowls. They are probably the most used dishes in the house.

I have been looking forever for the same thing. I want something with just a little curved lift on the rims, more like a plate than a pasta bowl. This is the best one I have found so far. I need to order one to see if I like it. You might like it too.

Thanks everyone! So many options. I'm looking more for bowls versus plates as our dinner salads are huge: greens, veggies (squash peppers tomato you know the deal) beans or lentils and occasionally a grain. Our main everyday plates are only 8" and the husband is tired of going back for seconds on salad nights. He'd rather just have one serving in a bowl (truthfully, I agree). We have larger plates for entertaining but they still are not ideal for salads.

The pasta bowls and low bowls are good leads. I will be checking everything out this weekend. Thanks and more suggestions are still appreciated :)

    Have a great day!

So you want something more like this?

I have large dinner plates (10-11") with a curved-up edge that I HATE for any other meal, but they're perfect for big salads.

Meanwhile, I've been searching for months for a 10" plate that meets my quirky list of criteria. But that's another topic for another day.

I usually use these Williams Sonoma Everyday Pasta/Soup Bowls. There are just two of us and with our work schedules I often eat alone. So if I want a REALLY big salad, I'll sometimes just grab a small glass mixing bowl. My parents have a set of small glass mixing bowls (larger than a standard cereal/salad bowl) that they use. I'm not certain where they purchased them, possibly Williams Sonoma or Crate & Barrel.

There are no blemishes in the glaze on anything - on the dinner plates, however, each plate has a noticeable circle in the center of the plate (obviously you can't see it once it's covered with food). The bowls are beautiful.

Pasta bowls here too, but they aren't really big enough for a MEAL salad. Before kids when we went through our Big Salad phase (which I'm almost ready to go through again), we got a pair of simple glass serving bowls that were perfect. Now they are serving bowls again. We didn't have a dishwasher so they were fine.

I got Fiesta individual pasta bowls from Macys. They are exclusive to Macys and lack a rim like on the regular Fiesta pasta bowls. They are large and perfect for a MEAL sized salad, or any other one dish meal.

I use a dinner plate, or a small shallow serving dish.
