Wiring 4 wall lights w/2 3-way switches

We are replacing 4 wall lights controlled by 2 3-way switches. We THOUGHT we grouped the wires together correctly as we took down the original ones. The first light has a white, black & ground wire. The second light has 2 whites together & - a red & black together. Then they go to a switch & on to the third light. This has 3 whites together, 3 blacks together & 3 reds together. The fourth one has 2 whites together & a red & black together & on to the other switch. All w/grounds. If we wired the whites together & the blacks together (except for where there was a red one w/it), what are we doing wrong? Only the 3rd one is working w/no switch able to control it at all. The lights are not in the middle of the 2 switches. There are 2 lights - a switch - 2 more lights - then the other switch. All 4 are to work in unison

Please help!!! MUCH thanks!!!
