Is this table right for my formal living room

Hi, I have longish living room. It has a fireplace ( marble with wood mantle) flanked by 2 windows. I have 2 sofa currently on either side of the fireplace and currently looking for a table to go in between and may be another one in the other wall. Can you please tell me if this is a good choice.

I will have a lighter traditional rug to go under. The table has lighter inlay in it which is not clearly seen in the picture.

    My sofas flank the fireplace.
A round table didn't look quite right. I prefer a rectangular, oval or or square shaped coffee table. JMO

Though we don't have 2 sofas in our family room, this might give you an idea of how a round table or ottoman might look.

I think that table will feel like a lot, flanked by the two bulky leather couches. You call it a formal living room, but certainly the couches aren't formal. What is the decor style of the space?

And, you have to take into consideration that you have to leave enough room between the widest part of the table and the center of each couch for people to sit and walk by comfortably. How does that work in the layout of the space, and how useful will the table be for people on either end of the couch once the middle is correctly placed?

I would cut out a circle that matches the size of the tabletop from taped together newspapers, or a round tablecloth if you have one that you could fold to get the correct size, and see how far apart the couches will have to be with that table, or any round table.

Then, if you determine that a certain size round table will work, I would look for something a bit simpler in design.

    I really like it.

Yes! What les said about making a mock up. I do this all the time as I cannot visualize well. I use packing boxes, cardboard over chairs, etc. Even newspapers on the floor between the sofas would give you some idea.
As for that particular table, I do question the rather matte( is it partially leather, too?) top. Not enough contrast with the sofas in color and material, and they both have a strong masculine vibe.

I think that your journey has not yet ended, little grasshopper. Continue your search...

Although the sofas and table do have some common elements and so could technically work I do find the combination quite masculine and heavy. Having said that, what are the paint colour, window coverings and natural light like. What is the night time light like. Are the surrounding elements dark as well? Are you going for a dark library look or a true formal dressed up look. For a library look it should be ok for a true formal look , I don;t think so. IMHO

    Hi,
Thanks for all the comments. To me the sofa is traditional has exposed wood and nail head trim. The table does not contrast too well, you are right. The room is fairly big with three double windows one on either side of fireplace and other in the far wall so space is not an issue. The floor has carpet which we are in the process of replacing with hardwood. It is sunken. Could you guys please suggest a table that will go with the room and the sofa. I can't seem to find anything that my husband also likes.

Can you post a picture? Your room sounds beautiful but it's easier to get suggestions if we saw a picture.

I am a big fan of round tables. It gives the room softness & they are easy to navigate around. It helps to break up too many linear lines. This table is good because it brings in the added element of the metal scrollwork.

The trick is always bringing it all together in the end with the other details of the room through texture, color, pattern mostly.

It's good that you have chosen a lighter area rug for the area - what colors are in it??? What's your wall color??? Window treatments???

I happen to like the heavy traditional look & think it's appropriate for a living room.

Balance is the key however, so once I know the color & pattern of the rug, I can guide you better as to how to bring it all together.
