Beautiful home. What a shame they painted all but this rooms beautiful wood work and cabinets.

It's not that uncommon around here (and probably most places). I can't tell you how many of the houses that I went into that probably had beautiful millwork that had been painted a white or cream. In particular the tudors and craftsman type houses. Considering one of my husband's objections to Tudor houses was that they felt "dark" and their rooms are "choppy", I think many feel the same. Shame really, probably the wrong person in the wrong house. Personally I find it a bit cozy with all the dark woodwork. Take the room above for intance....that is a pretty large room, but I still find it a cozy. I don't think it would feel like that if the woodwork had been painted.

Case in point...house nearby that somebody has really tried to contemporize. My husband would love it. I actually like it to, but am more drawn to the first one I posted.

Pretty room -- but I do believe that if the walls were painted a much deeper tone -- closer to the dark wood tone -- then the whole area would appear more visually cohesive ....

I really like the tudor, even with the kitchen remodel. The great room would make it all worthwhile.

The other home, well I like both the exterior and the interior, just not together!

I think houses and owners must become friends, and that if painted woodwork makes a home more beautiful, I see no harm in it. Like the current thread where a mahogany buffet was painted lilac and came out gorgeous, it is the planning and the eye for how the change will look that is important.

Of course, no one should go into a house wielding a paintbrush full of beige paint without first considering what they are trying to accomplish, but by the same token, wood need not stay dark into eternity simply because it started out that way.

I have issues with both of them, especially given the neighborhoods and price points.

The first one, IMHO has been a bit over-formalized in the kitchen and dining room, yet the bedrooms are lacking any sort of flow or pleasing proportions.

The second one, while charming on the outside, is just too chaotic with its choice of materials inside to have any cohesion or grounding calm to it. It lacks the calm organized negative space of a contemporary, has too many kitchy items (glass block and quilted contempo headboard) and the pot lights everywhere make it look like a flip house. Overdone.

But I bet the second one will sell first.

The second has been on the market for a bit. I drive by it on my way home from work, the first time I saw the sign and glanced at the house, my heart went all pitter patter. When I got home I looked at the listing, and like most love at first sight encounters, was sorely disappointed. Like gsciencechick pointed out....interior and exterior mismatch. The location isn't quite as ritzy.

The tudor I just find intriguing because that great room is drawing me in for some reason, even though I can't be sure that I wouldn't hate it. The dining room and kitchen don't bother me (other than the crazy stretch lens that they appear to be using) but I agree that the bedrooms seem like an afterthought. Not to mention that it is probably an "entry level" house to that neighborhood. It is a new listing. It will be interesting to see....
