What do you have hanging on your wall over your sofa??

I have re-done my living room. I don't have photos yet to post. I have a green sofa, with 2 modern style chairs that have a design similar to a stripe, but not exactly. The sofa is a modern style, that it's legs are contemporary, i.e. they show and there is no skirt of any type. I need to do some finishing touches to complete the room. There also is a oriental rug, more traditional pattern.

What I am struggling with is what to hang on the wall over the sofa. I am very drawn to the idea of a large canvas abstract painting. My concern is that I have 2 pillows on my sofa that have a somewhat floral design with a bird motif pattern. Can I mix this with an abstract canvas painting?

What does everyone else have on their wall? Is it more of a grouping, metal style wall decor or a large picture?

Would love to see photos if anyone has abstract art with some tradiitonal pieces, or any other ideas you can share.

Nothing! All 3 sofas are in front of windows....and the love seat angles into the room...with just space at the back
What to "hang over the sofa" is always a problem....and I have avoided it!! LOL!

Large colorful oil of the Pecan Island marsh in Louisiana. It's a gallery wrap that we chose not to frame.

We have a large painting over the sofa in one room. The other room is small and has a loveseat and a chair. I plan on putting a gallery of smaller art over the love seat.

Nothing over our sofa, but we do have some art on shelves over some seating in one part of our living room. We change up art & books from time to time and I currently have some dried branches up there as well. Sorry for the poor quality photo - our LR really isn't as off-centre/crooked as it appears here!

Right now, nothing over the sofa. I'm thinking about a mirror or pair of mirrors, because the room is dark and I have plenty of art in other parts of the room.

As far as mixing a modern abstract with floral patterned pillows--sure! Not to re-hash the recent thread on matching vs. non-matching decor, but if YOU like the way they look together, bingo! That's what matters. Some people like matching or traditional combinations, other people like to mix it up. Both can be beautiful.

These days, my sofa is floated out in the middle of the room, so there's nothing over it except the ceiling. In my last home, I had a large framed serigraph of a painting by one of my favorite artists.

Rmkitchen and sochi, I love the idea of a collection rather than one big piece and it works beautifully for both of you.

My sectional is not against a wall so I do not have anything over it. Post pics of your space.

Rmkitchen--i love your gallery wall--so colorful and eclectic!

I don't have a picture of it, but I have a collage of family photos behind my sofa. I think there's 12 different size frames (at work right now so I can't see it) but they are all the same type frame (black wood with white mats) for consistancy.

Love those shelves... I am keeping that for future reference...

rmkitchen and sochi - what gorgeous inspiration! Love those spaces - thanks for sharing.

    Sashasmommy, the shelves are IKEA.

Thanks for all the ideas. Love the shelves with the picture frames. I have also thought about re-arranging and putting sofa in front of window. Does make things easier, but don't want to block the window.

I will try and post some photos.

I hung some art that my mom painted over the sofa and matted an abstract IKEA painting of the city by the bay :)

I know how hard can be to choose something to have there. From what you describe, an abstract painting would go nice there, but here is another idea. Over my living room sofa, I have a big gold mirror (35x42) with two other small sunburst mirrors (12x12, and 9x9) it looks great, but I just had a custom made mirror-window, in wood and black ( 32x42) for my dining room, and I like it so much that I am thinking about switching it with the big mirror over my living room sofa. I think the mirror-window would look great in your space. I had seen it in stores, but not exactly as I wanted it, but you can find it online. I would also suggest if you are not really sure, get any type of mirror. canôt go wrong with a mirror!! Let me know what you think. Good luck!!

I think a large abstract would be great or a grouping of pics.

I have a grouping of 6 prints that expand the width of the sofa...all in same frames and by same artist. (B& W sketches). I've gone from 2 prints to this grouping and prefer it when it fills the space over the sofa.

Ok...so picture was taken a while ago, lol. (Or...I'm really early in decorating for Christmas) They're crooked too...oops...I see it in the pic:)
