how do you remove cigarette smoke smell from wood furniture?

I bought wood dining (actually they were dinning) chairs on craigslist and they have a heavy smoke smell. I'm going to repaint them but I think I should clean them first. Will vinegar get rid of the smell & any nicotine residue or is there something better?

I would use mineral spirits.

If you are going to paint them then a good sealer /primer before you paint can seal in the odor.

Vinegar is a very poor choice for cleaning wood.

1 - Wash ALL surfaces with warm water and a mild soap. Don't forget the underside. Use a toothbrush on the cracks.

2 - Rinse with water and let it dry

3 - Wash all surfaces with mineral spirits and 0000 steel wool or a green scrub pad. Wipe it dry.

You should be odor free, grunge free, and ready to paint.

We've used Kilz on things that smell smoky.
Our house burned; we salvaged a couple of things that we Kilzed and then painted.
Same treatment on a hand-me-down table from a smoked-in home.
Completely eliminated the odor.
