Your opinion please on this chandy? Like it or not for my space?

Upon talking to my DH about lowering the chandy in the dining area, I learn that he has decided he doesn't like it and would rather have something else. I love it, but I can understand that he thinks it may be too much. Here's my home in progress. Can you tell me if you like it or not with my other decor. Note that I am planning to replace the mirrors over the buffet with a different mirror and add some lamps (possibly the ones shown that teacat suggested). I also would like to replace the chandy in the foyer that can be seen from the living room into something that would coordinate with the dining area chandy. The only things I would like to keep in my living room is the sectional sofa, the curtains, and the artwork above the fireplace. The painter is coming next week to discuss wall colors, and I want to go darker. So please keep all these things in mind. Pics to come.

I think I am with your husband on this. Your overall scheme is a pretty solid transitional that is working. The fixture is a little flashy, and I dunno, these always seem like something you would put in a teenage girls bedroom as sort of a bling-y but ephemeral kind of statement. I don't think it has much presence with your furniture.

I have that chandy in my bathroom over the tub. (Well the semi-flush version). I don't think it works in your space, so I also agree with your hubby. I'd rather see a drum shaded light there. This one might be too big, but it gives the idea.

    Thank you, pallimp and beekeeper!

I guess I was trying to go more contemporary, and I went overboard. That chandy is more like the drum shade that we had hanging there before from Crate and Barrel. It was 28x12 and it looked so cool, we thought, over the table. However, we had water damage and had to get rid of it. Your chandy is even bigger, beekeeperswife. Not sure what color shade I should go with since I plan on changing the wall color.

OT, I agree with the others, but I have a separate question for you. We're looking at a sectional the same size as yours. How big is the rug in your living room?

Thanks, sjhockeyfan. The rug is 8x10.

I agree with the others too. I also think it looks a little small in that area.

It seems unanimous. Now if I go back to a drum style shade/pendant, will it be alright if I have that type of chandy in my kitchen too? I already have one in there.

I like your chandy but it doesn't seem to fit the style of your home and its a bit too small in scale. I think it would look great to have a larger drum shade, even if you have one in your kitchen as well.

(just a note of clarification, I have the crystal one over my tub.)

    That's gorgeous, beekeeperswife!

If I go with the drum type chandy, which I do love over that table, especially a large one like the one beekeeper posted, should I stay with a white or linen shade since my chairs have a white and pale yellow fabric on them?

Also, what would you suggest for the wall above the buffet to go with it?

I'm in awe of all of you with such decorating abilities. I have none.

What do you think about this pendant? It's in an antique nickel and it measures 20 x 26.5. My table is about 46 inches in diameter.

I'm not usually fond of drum shades, but I think that is gorgeous!

Here are some guidelines I found for size selection

"If the room is smaller than 10' by 10', a 17" to 20" diameter chandelier would be the right size.
If the room is about 12' x 12', a 26" or 27" chandelier would look right.
    If the room is about 14' x 14', choose a 24" to 36" chandelier.
A chandelier should hang about 30" from the surface of the table to insure no bumped heads and good illumination.
A chandelier should be about 12" narrower than the width of the table over which it hangs.
Total wattage of all bulbs should be 200 watts to 400 watts to provide sufficient light"

Thank you, olychick! I'm trying to find the right style for my space and realize now the other one just won't do.

I think the size of this one would work then, because that area is about 12x12. I wonder why 30" is the standard sometimes, because if youa want to add a large vase of tall flowers, it ends up just about hitting the chandy. Also, if there is artwork on a wall and the chandy cuts off the view of it, is that a good thing? Just some things I have thought about.

Here is another site that has some common sense info about what height to hang it. I don't think it's a hard and fast rule, just a guide.

About art - because in the dining room the art will be viewed when seated, I don't think the chandelier would block art that is hung at the correct height. At least that's what I've been told. Maybe some pro's will weigh in for you.

Thanks, oly. Since we have a pretty small dining area (compared to the room we used to have anyway), it just seems that the chandy has to hang pretty close to the wall and artwork, and we like to walk by and view the art. However, I know what you are saying.

Very nice choice! Sleek and modern! :)

Here's a table lamp that might work in the adjoining living space .....

I like that too, teacats! Thank you. :) Just trying to keep it all cohesive. ;)
