print/pattern - commercial carpet

Hi,

I think I've only been to Home Decorating once before - just haven't changed things much in my house since I found the forums - other than my kitchen. I spent a lot of time in Kitchens. Anyway, I need to replace some carpet in a loft area that we are turning into a home office for DH who has a new job officing out of our home. I'm not a big carpet fan and have tile, wood & area rugs in the rest of the house but I do think carpet is the best choice in this space. I want carpet that's like an oriental rug - low tight nap and a pattern. I always like commercial carpet over the typical residential carpet. I was looking online for patterned carpet and found something from Mohawk called Durkan. What do you think about putting something like this in a residential space? I've never really purchased any carpet - other than some very small sections of indoor/outdoor for a screened porch and the hallway from my garage to the house. Anytime I've removed old carpet I've replaced it with wood or tile so I'm pretty ignorant about carpet - just know what I like the looks of and what I don't care for.

We have a commercial grade carpet in our home office. The first carpet lasted about 11-12 years. The carpet itself was still in good condition; however it kept buckling because we initially put pad under it and the constant rolling of the chairs created problems. We always used chair mats, but it was still enough rolling to cause movement. We'd had it re-stretched several times till the carpet installer finally said "last time".

The new carpet is also commercial grade but without a pad & glued down. It's held up well thus far.

There are some very pretty Durkan patterns. Do you have a certain one picked out?

Thanks for the info! Actually yes there is a particular pattern I like - something from the Talisman group I think.

Got the new carpet in my loft today - love it! I was thinking I must be a bit odd as I seem to be the only person who loves commercial carpet for home use. Even my basement furnace/laundry room got new carpet - nice remnant leftover from the loft. The last of my 37 year old gold shag finally went bye-bye - how exciting!

You are not alone; I thought I was, LOL. When I built my house 25 yrs ago, I put commercial carpet in all 3 kids bedrooms. That stuff wore like iron. In fact I'm getting new commercial carpet installed next week in 2 bedrooms.

I like commercial carpet in houses too - I love the patterns. But then, I like hotel lobby furniture, too - LOL.

In 1971, my parents installed commercial carpet in their kitchen - a black and green sort of floral design. My sister now lives in that house and the carpeting is still there and still looks great. That's 38 years of daily wear!

Seven years ago I had commercial carpet made into a runner for my stairs. I'm sick of the pattern but the carpet still looks great.
