Help with family room decor- lots of pics!

I am unhappy with our family room. I can't exactly put my finger on it... but the room doesn't look "together" to me. I would love some suggestions.

This room is our only family room on our main floor. As you can see, it is not open to any other room in the house. We do entertain, and when we're not outside or in the kitchen, we are in this room... often with kids. We have been in this house for 3 years... most everything in the room was purchased 3 years ago and I'm not looking to replace it. I *am* looking for a new coffee table, side table, and lamp. I am also dying to put something above the sofa- have no clue what...

I do have a two year old daughter. I am looking for a coffee table with some sort of storage for my daughter's toys.. I am thinking wood, cherry since the entertainment center and floors are cherry. Or is that too much wood? I sometimes joke that my house is where wood came to die (wood floors all over the first floor... oak cabinets in kitchen, wood dining set etc etc etc.) Also- I feel that the coffee table needs to be rectangular- and it would go in front of the sofa- right? (sorry- I feel like I'm over thinking this.)

Anyway, I would love some outside perspective! What would YOU do to this room?

View from foyer:

In the room

Entertainment center (with fall decor) This cannot be moved.

Wall with sofa. I hate this wall. I need something above the sofa... a new side table, and a new lamp. But I don't even know what to look for for the space.

another view of hated wall.... from loft above. It shows how big this wall is. What on earth should I put there???

Finally- a view of the entire room from loft above.

I'm thinking I should pull the rug so that it is under the sofa- wdyt?

Thank you so much for your thoughts! I'm anxious for this room to look "completed" and "together."

I'm no expert by any stretch of the imagination, but i would say pull the sofa away from the wall, more out onto the rug, also ger a bigger lamp for by the sofa as that one looks far too small. Can you move that rug down so it's more in front of the fireplace, then place the furniture touching the rug.Furniture doesn't have to hug the walls, unless the room is real small and there is no other option and that doesn't seem to be the case here.

The other thing that seems to throw things off is the whiteness of the fireplace,it seems to be too stark for what else is going on in that room.JMO,and as i said,i'm no decorator.

Why cant the entertainment center be moved? Would it fit on the wall where the couch is now?

How do people watch tv in the room comfortably, except from those two leather chairs?

Okay, letÂs assume that the ec canÂt be moved and run with that. Kathi and I are on the same wavelength on some of this, it seems.

Start by turning the rug the other direction, and move the couch in closer, so that after you turn the rug the front legs of the couch end up on the rug. Center the couch with the center of the fireplace.

Put the leather chairs on either side of the fireplace. End table and lamp by each chair, on the fireplace side. The front legs of the chairs should also be on the rug, which as I said, you have turned to run parallel to the fireplace wall.

Instead of a storage coffee table, which eats up floor space, consider adding a cabinet on the back wall where the couch used to be. It can have pull-out baskets for storage, or be closed with doors and drawers, etc. If you still want something in front of the couch, consider a round fabric ottoman on wheels that can serve as extra seating, but be moved to give your daughter and friends play space.

In the corner of that wall closest to the window, place the green chair and the little rocker. Put the floor lamp by that chair. Great extra seating that can be moved into the other area if needed, but in the meantime a good play space for your adorable daughter. A runner in that area that compliments the rug in the room would give her a comfy spot if she wants to play there.

Keep those storage shelves or cabinets about normal counter height. Use the top for another lamp, perhaps even a serving space when you entertain. If you are really ambitious, you could add a piece of slate or granite to the top to tie the storage pieces together.

Hang the mirror from over the fireplace horizontally above the storage cabinets. That mirror is WAY too large for over the fireplace, and takes away from it. The mirror in a room should reflect something pleasing, and I think this reflecting windows and fireplace and seating would be very nice.
Speaking of the fireplace, it does, as suggested, feel very light in that room. I canÂt tell from the pix whether it is already painted, or just really light stone, but I would consider either staining the stone or painting it a deeper shade of the wall color. But whether or not you change the color of the fireplace, hang a nice piece of artwork up there, something warm and pulling in the colors from the rug, perhaps. Framed in a wood frame that picks up on the entertainment center tonality. DonÂt try to make it a huge piece - you are never going to fill up all that height, nor should you.

Finally, take each of your curtain panels, take the last ring on the outside of each, and move it to the outside of the mounting bracket. It will make the panels hang nicer, and will give them a fuller, more finished look.

You have a lovely home, and lovely furnishings. A little tweaking will make you fall in love with the room!

Thank you so much for your thoughts!!!!! When we watch TV, we sit on the couch or in the leather chairs... all are comfortable viewing spaces. I hesitate to move the leather chairs to either side of the fireplace bc one would almost become useless (couldn't see the TV.) These chairs are super comfortable and recline (Bradington and Young.)
I am intrigued by switching the direction of the rug and moving the couch... I think we'll try that this afternoon. :)
I love my little green and white accent chair, as well as the little rocker (made by my great-grandfather.) I would love to have it in a "better" location so it doesn't appear to be so randomly thrown in the room.
Can you give me an example of storage cabinets for behind the couch? And they would go against the wall?
The fireplace is not painted... it is a light stone/brick... painting it makes me cringe... but it could be done!
Again, thanks for your thoughts!!! I *want* to LOVE this room! :) :) :)

I think Les has some really great ideas, especially on turning the rug and centering the sofa on the fireplace. Start with that.

Definitely turn the rug. Pull the sofa away from wall - all of your seating/furniture is lining the walls. It's unnatural. The mirror needs to be replaced with a large piece of art - but not as large as the mirror. The mirror does not reflect anything interesting and does not add to the room at all. After you make changes, see if you still want a coffee table. If so, I would look at ottomans first.

Another non-expert here, but I also would turn and move the rug to center it on the fireplace, pull the couch away from the wall, and place a long, narrow sofa table behind it (that would be a pretty way to see the room from your foyer). If it is within your budget, I would have bookshelves built for that wall or buy a huge piece of abstract art (or something else you like if abstract isn't your thing).

I agree that you will love this room with a little tweaking!

Okay- I took your tips and did some rearranging. I think you can get the best view from my loft, over looking the room. Just remember the entertainment center is on the wall that you really can't see, and I don't think it can be moved. It would then be facing the fireplace... which my husband doesn't want.

Here is a pic with the couch and rug moved... with the couch semi-centered (not a word, huh?? ;) across from the fireplace. I think the couch then blocks the entry into the room... I like the idea of cabinets behind... . but I just don't think there is enough room. Unless I'm missing something here....

Now we got a little wild and moved the couch and run on an angle. I don't think we like this....

Finally- here is what I have currently. My husband actually likes this. Both leather chairs are in view of the TV, as is the couch. Green and white accent chair is back in its original position. Baby rocker is still just tossed in. WDYT?

I still need some sort of coffee table. I *will* move the rings to the curtains outside the mounting bracket- I meant to do that a long time ago.

I am open to ideas and CC. Thank you so very much!!!

Yes -- another vote to switch the rug around!:)

Just a thought!!! -- but I wonder how the sofa would look if it was angled across the corner (where the naked wall meets the window wall) It would face into the room and the TV.

THEN try a leather chair on each side of the angled sofa. Play with the exact angles so that the chairs face each other -- and can be pulled slightly to watch TV.

O.K. -- now you have a seating area. Measure the "open" area between the sofa and chairs carefully. Maybe an ottoman with a "hidden" storage might work there? Or a table with baskets for storage?

As for the tall naked wall space -- look for larger artworks in sets (maybe two larger ones? or four smaller ones?) that would help to fill the space and bring in color and textures.

    Just some thoughts!!! :)

Oops .... sorry ... must have posting at the same time ....

Never mind about the angles ////

O.K. I vote for Version 3 -- with the sofa on the window wall!

BUT consider adding a couple of dark wood shelving units to the tall wall -- check out Ikea shelving.

Well, you have to live in your space as it works best for you, so I guess if you are happy with the last arrangement, then you should keep it. If you do that, tho, you need to turn the rug the other way, so it follows the widest line of your furniture placement. The way it is now, it feels like a runway between the couch and the ec.

However, I think that arrangement feels like everything in the room is jammed against the window.

However, I think you have room to do it with the couch facing the fireplace. if you look at the pix before the angled one, the most overhead, you can see that what you need to do is move the run closer to the fireplace. The front legs of both chairs should be sitting on the rug. The arm of the couch should be lined up with the divide between the middle and left windows.

That should give you plenty of room for cabinets or bookcases on that back wall.

If the couch works better for you off-center, that is fine. No rule that says everything in a room has to be centered.

I understand your DHs concern about the one leather chair not facing the tv if it is on the right side of the fireplace, but how often do you have enough people on the space that it is an issue?

You continue to mention that you need a coffetable. What is your vision for how that will be used? Generally, people sitting on a couch are not crazy about having to lean forward or move forward on the seat to reach a beverage, for example, And certainly you dont want a coffetable for people to put their feet up on.

If you are interested, try moving the rug closer as suggested. But if you want to keep things as they are, I would for sure turn the rug.

What's your focal point - the fireplace or the wall unit? Unless you want a home theater look with a runway, group the sofa and chairs for conversation around the fireplace. The rug bothers me. I would opt for something round and not so big between the fireplace and the sofa to soften the 4 angles. My choice with kids would be two large baskets put together to act as coffee tables. Put toys and books in them. Don't kids sit on the floor to watch TV anymore? All chairs and sofas do not need to be pointed toward the TV. Keep moving that stuff, girlfriend until you feel comfortable!

I gotta say I like the sofa facing the fireplace better. If you decide to keep it in front of the windows then at least try turning the rug back and pulling the sofa out and consider moving the two leather chairs to both face the fireplace, right now all the seating is at one end of the room.

lauren0319, where did you get your entertainment center, and do you know what brand it is? It is very nice.

Beautiful home and furnishings. I think the problem is the rug. I would take out the rug and rearrange the furniture without it and without accomodating it. Once you get the furniture in place, then see if the rug works. If it doesn't, get a new rug. Also, a big leather ottoman with storage might be nice to use in place of a coffee table. You could always but a tray on top for drinks. But then, since your two year old will be in the room alot, you may want a hard surface for books and coloring. I know, not pretty but practical. Also, I would make your beautiful fireplace the focal point. Arrange the furniture arround the firplace first, then worry about tv viewing. JMO.

An excellent idea to try removing the rug for a short time period -- and then play with the furniture arrangement.

JUST a thought -- but I wonder if a round rug might work in the seating area??

Okay- couch is still against the windows. Rug is turned sideways... looks much better!! rings from the curtains are moved outside the brackets. (and all curtain rods, blinds, and window sills are dusted, as is the top of the EC!!! Yipeee! :) lol.
I am liking this more and more.

Regarding moving the couch opposite the fireplace- that seems to be the most popular idea. The reason I put it where it is in the above photo (best seen in the 3rd photo where I showed different arrangements) is because then the rug is centered in the room (with the windows and entertainment center.) If I move it closer to the fireplace, then the couch is more in front of the EC, cutting it off. Does that make sense? We're not huge TV people.. my daughter doesn't even watch one second of TV (that will change... but she has a play room upstairs for that, in the future.)

Do I have to have one focal point? When we have friends over, the TV is NOT on- focal point- fireplace. When it's just my H and myself, focal point- TV/Entertainment center.

I'm not sure why I feel the need for a coffee table... I looked at storage ottomans yesterday at Bassett. I like that idea but yikes! They were around $600... I was hoping to spend less. If I went that route- what color would you suggest?

Finallly- luv2look- Our entertainment center is by Hooker, called Brookhaven. I bought it online from a place called Basista. I had a great experience with them and saved almost half compared to buying locally. I also got my Bradington and Young chairs through them. I will link the EC below. HTH!

Thank you all. I'll try to get an updated pic up for more CC :)

For less expensive ottomans and coffee tables -- check out sites like "homedecorators.com" and "overstock.com" ...

there may be artworks and shelving units at those sites too .....
