Vote on Dining Room Furniture (Warning lots of pics)

18 years ago

Below is a few pics of our dining room. I'd like your opinions on the following furniture options (table/chair/sideboard or curio & upholstry). Think I've narrowed it down to this Hickory White stuff. We've looked for antiques for quite some time without any luck.

Dining Room:

{{!gwi}}

{{!gwi}}

Please provide your opinion on which table/chair/sideboard combo:

Table 1

{{!gwi}}

Table 2:

{{!gwi}}

Table 3:

{{!gwi}}

China/Buffets:

China 1:

{{!gwi}}

China 2:

{{!gwi}}

Chairs:

Chair 1 (would use different fabric)

{{!gwi}}

Chair 2 (again would go with diff fabric)

{{!gwi}}

Chair 3

{{!gwi}}

Chair 4 Endchairs (different fabric)

{{!gwi}}

Leaning towards table 1 with chair 1 as sidechairs, and chair 4 as end chairs (though don't know about the legs on 4 compared to 1. and leaning towards the buffet option 1. These are all from different Hickory White collections, so wondering if it's too uncoordinated. The fabric options can be found at: http://www.lexfurniture.com/hickorywhite/hwdiningchairfabrics.html With the rug in the room, leaning towards one of the solids.

The room is 14X 16 and the rug is 9 x 12'. Chandelier mfg unknown, Rug Pottery Barn Tree of Life, Walls BM Cottage Red (its outdoor color, had them mix indoor) The adjacent living room is unfurnished so options are wide open.

If you have any other suggestions, I'm open to them.

We've been without a dining room for 3 years, which is due to indecisiveness....help stop the insanity! ;)

The rest of our house is basicaly classified as casual 1/2 finished. The dining room looks formal and is separated from kitchen with hall butlers pantry so I'm fine with being a little more dressed than the rest of the house.

TIA!

    I'm with all the #1's with the different chair for the ends. Your DR is looking elegant.

  • 18 years ago

    Beautiful room! Love the colors and the beautiful trim. I vote for the 1's also....I think a sideboard is much more interesting than a hutch. Would love to see pics when it's finished!

  • 18 years ago

    When looking at the pics I chose all the 1's too. Love them! Also love sideboards way more than hutches.

    It will all look beautiful!

  • 18 years ago

    Love the color and wainscoting. I also like table 1 and buffet 1. Chair 1 is very nice, but I'm also not sure about chair 4 for the ends. I don't think the legs go with the 1st chair. Gorgeous room!!

  • 18 years ago

    Lots of nice choices, but frankly I think tables 1 and 3 are too bulky for your room, and 2 looks spindly to me.

    But of the three, I would pick #3 - the columns of the pedestals compliment the columns by the entry, and the whole effect is cleaner in relation to all the detail on the wainscot.

    If you do the sideboard, you will need to be sure you have a fair number of larger pieces on the upper walls in the form of art or mirrors. Otherwise, all the visual weight will be on the bottom half of the room between the wainscot, table and chairs. I think the style of the sideboard is a better fit with the tables.

    As for chairs, I would say the only one that fits well with the tables you have chosen is #2. The other side chairs feel like the wrong period or something. I like the Chippendale feel of chair #4, because I like the clean lines of the legs, but not with the side chairs you have picked. How about doing that for the head chairs, and their Chippendale side chairs?

    {{!gwi}}

    If you do #2, can you get the same chair without arms for the side chairs, and then armchairs for the host and hostess? Arm chairs all around will add to the bulk in the room.

  • 18 years ago

    Table #1 - chair #1 - I do not care for Chair #4 w/ that table (maybe because I have a similar one to that in my LR). Perhaps Chair #1 w/ a different fabric for the head of table. Regarding the arms on the other chairs - I would be afraid the ends of arms would hit the apron on the table. Also, armless chairs are much easier to get in & out of. I am torn between the Buffet and the china hutch. The hutch balances the window. Table #1 has gorgeous pedestal leg detailing!

  • 18 years ago

    What a stunning room! Love the color red and all your trim work. Beautiful!!! I personally like table # 2 I love the fine lines to this table. I believe the legs in the middle are only when you have the table all the way extended..?? I would do chair # 2 and for the host/hostess chairs (the ends) I would do fabric parson style chairs with coordinating fabrics. Please post pictures when you get you furniture.. I would love to see it finished! Good luck with your decision..no matter what you choose, it will look gorgeous in there. Ree

    I agree with magothyrivergirl's suggestions. I love the color on your walls. Hurry up--Thanksgiving will be here before you know it!

  • 18 years ago

    Wow, Love your room. Also love table #1 and sideboard. Chairs should be simple and love the upholstered ones to break up all the wood. I think the ones you've chosen are fine but could even be simpler. Definitely keep the idea of the taller upholstered head chairs. Beautiful color on the walls, too. Don't worry, this room is going to be fabulous.

  • 18 years ago

    I really love your room. The color is very nice and the wainscoting makes it look even better. Great room already!

    I like table #2 because its not as heavy as the other tables and I think it will fit in better with the space you have without it feeling cramped.

    I'm not crazy about any of the chairs but if I had to choose I would go with chair #2 but not in that color.

    For the sideboard I would choose #1 again for the open space feel.

  • 18 years ago

    My choices:

    Table #3, Buffet #1, Chair #2

    All lovely pieces.

  • 18 years ago

    Okay, you know I love table #1. I think Hickory White is a really nice choice - well made and a good price point. Gawd, that buffet looks extremely gorgeous:)

    Hardwire you 2 sconces for either side of the buffet with a gorgeous, over the top mirror!! Artwork to compliment colors on your walls/rugs going into the butlers pantry. Nice oil paintings - maybe landscape to add some green.

    As for the chairs....I am currently on a search myself. Chairs are so dang expensive!! Now, these are my thoughts...since I am a fairly casual person but also love a little drama(seems like you do too!)I am thinking more upholstered chairs. I love fabric, think it really softens a space. I would want to show off that base on the table and not get to "leggy." I'll throw this out there....Carrington Court for upholstered parsons chairs. Georgiagal has them in her dr and I think they look gorgeous!! I am seriously considering these if I can't find any antique chairs - love the price, too:)

    Smiles:)

    Your room is beautiful even empty, so I'm sure it's going to be even more so when it's furnished. I would go with all the #1 choices, although I do love the chairs that Les posted.

    I'm so jealous you're making progress!

  • 18 years ago

    I like table no. 2 because I feel as though the other tables with the pedestal bases are difficult when dealing with chairs and people's legs underneath. I really like the sideboard. I used to have a china cabinet and then when I bought new dining room furniture, I got a sideboard. I do think it's much more interesting. I have pretty lamps on mine with a decorative mirror hanging above it. I really like the look. I like the clean lines of chair no. 1.

  • 18 years ago

    Woops. I realize I made a mistake. I like table #3 best, the cleaner-looking double pedestal.

    I think that pedestal tables eliminate the problem of table legs being in the way, unless cind11, you're talking about the feet of those pedestals? Most people don't sit close enough to the table that the feet will be much of a problem but, just in case, we're looking at a double pedestal that has only two feet, not three, so that the feet are not in the way.

    I forgot to mention something about fabric choices. I don't think you have to limit yourself to a solid for your chairs. There are some beautiful patterned fabrics that would look gorgeous with the rug.

  • 18 years ago

    I like all number ones but I also like an interesting table. There will be times when the chairs will be moved aside for a party and the table will become a buffet table (with no chairs) then it will have a wonderful stand alone quality.

    Beautiful room!

  • 18 years ago

    My vote is for table #3. Table #1 is gorgeous -- but it's very 'busy' down below and you already have that lovely wainscoting and rug. Plus chair legs. I think the eye would get drawn down below the tableand never get back up! Table #2 just seems so insubstantial. Maybe not in person, but from that picture it does. So #3 gets my vote. Nice substantial pedestals. Calming to the eye. Flexible with chair legs and guests' feet.

    For chairs - Again, I think something simple. I like #1 because I think it's less tied to one particular style and would be very versatile.

    For china, I agree with Les that you'll need something substantial at 'higher elevations' in the room. A china hutch is an easy choice for getting that height. A lower buffet could also work if you have some large accessories to go on top, or maybe some 'weighty' artwork for the walls. I'm not loving the proportions of china cab #2. I like the width of #1, provided you can bring some height into the room somehow.

  • 18 years ago

    I would go with table #1 and chair #1 (with same fabric as in picture). What color fabric are you thinking of using for chair #1?

  • 18 years ago

    Sorry if I missed this, but is the piece that's currently in your DR staying?

  • 18 years ago

    Forgot to vote on china. I would choose #1. your dining room is so pretty you could mix the chairs, for example, 2 leather and 4 cloth chairs.

  • 18 years ago

    Table #2, chairs #2 and perhaps 2 additional #4 chairs for heads of table. I think the simplicity of the table and chairs allows the beautiful room to be the focus. IN a small room, with too much fancy-dancy, you will have the table and chairs fighting for attention with the room. I like the sideboard look for China.

    Let the room steal the show and the furnishings compliment an already lovely space.

    My vote is for Table #1 because I love the criss-cross pedestals, I've never seen that before so I think it's not only more unique than the other two but is a beautiful design. For that table I prefer chair #1. Dining chairs with arms can sometimes bang into the table if they weren't designed to go together. The pedestals aren't solid so there is an airiness about them, table #3's solid legs give it a heavier look. I like that the pedestals on #1 have some straight lines to them, it feels more updated to me than the traditional Queen Anne table.

    What are the price differences between these three tables? Table #1 looks more expensive to me so I'm curious if it is or not.

    I'm undecided about the two chinas. Not wild about china #1, in the photo the claw feet seem so pronounced. I much prefer china #2, especially the bottom half of it. But maybe a tall china cabinet will make the room feel darker and more closed in....not to mention more formal. On the other hand, you have dark red walls so that will look very nice against the china cabinet, it's already a rich color so the cabinet probably won't add much more in the way of darkness to the room. Just thinking aloud here, lol.

    Decision also depends on what you have in the way of dinnerware...do you own china that you want displayed in a cabinet? Or are you like me and can't be bothered fussing with all that and just want them packed into a cupboard with doors to hide the mess...plus it's too chipped anyway to be on show! I ended up buying an armoire for my dining room because storage was my main criteria.

    So what's your main criteria in the way you want your living room to function? Sideboards are very practical for serving buffets. Do you already have or would you also need to spend money on art work for the wall above it plus candlesticks,lamps or whatever you think will look best on the sideboard? Are there special things you want to see displayed in a shelf, it's not just for china anymore. Or do you detest dusting and hate to see things staged? Those are the questions I asked myself when I was in your sitution trying to decide between sideboard, china cabinet or armoire.
    Your room is gorgeous, really you can't go wrong with either china.

  • 18 years ago

    typo...I meant dining room not living room.

  • 18 years ago

    Table # 1 preferably although #3 would work also. Table #2 doesn't work for this room. IMHO - it looks spindly/cheap repro.

    With either Table # 1 or #3, I'd use Chair #2 as the *Mom & Pop* chairs and the Camel back chairs on Johnatemps link as the side chairs, thus keeping the line of the top similar/the same. That said I've always thot, being that one's focus as host/hostess is on one's guest pleasure and comfort, placing oneself in more comfortable chairs than they is rather an odd concept. :-))

    China #1 is my pref but I'm not a China Hutch fan. If you would like a hutch over a buffet for display purposes, I would look for another selection than the one here displayed. Maybe it's the bun feet but something about it doesn't do it for me.

    Chair #4 is a total reject for me as the leg style doesn't go with anything.

    I'm looking forward to seeing *the finalists*. LOL!! Truly a lovely room your are creating.

  • 18 years ago

    That room is so beautiful. I like table 3, china 1 and chair 2. If you don't want the arms though I like chair 1 also in a different fabric with perhaps armchairs at the ends.

  • 18 years ago

    I prefer Table #2 and Chair #2 - the scale just seems better with your room. The others look too massive and chunky or wrong style. I'm not crazy about any of the china cabinets/side boards - again, too chunky. I'd look for a slightly more delicate looking sideboard.

  • 18 years ago

    I like table 3 for your dining room. (I'm assuming all the measurements work.) The idea of the buffet is nice--I wish I had a larger one. If, however, you want to display china/crystal, the #2 would work. I'm not gaga over the bun feet, but the other aspects of the china cabinet are very nice. I do not care for chair #4 at all. Also, I am really down on arms on side chairs, based on my recent dining experiences. So, I guess I'm not sent by any of the chairs shown as accompaniments for your table. Of those show I like armless #2 the best, because I think the lines are best with table 3. I would like some upholstered Parsons chairs for the ends, or even #2's, with arms, for the ends. I like the idea of a stripe or geometric or attractive print for the upholstery, too. (I am tempted by all of your choices, but I'm trying to make suggestions on your specific room.)

    I have the hickory white table # 3 and the Chippendale chairs, although I wish my end chairs were different.

  • 18 years ago

    I think that is the chair that I posted earlier, is it not, to go with table 3? Great minds think alike, eh Terri? LOL

    Terri's pix helps make the point that once you have all the chairs pushed into the table, you aren't going to see the pedestal effect of table #1 - it is just going to look busy.

    Very pretty room, Terri!

  • 18 years ago

    Just wanted to mention something that I haven't noticed discussed (unless I've overlooked the comment)... I've seen decorators recommend that your chairs should stay on the area rug even when pulled out for use, so allow at least 18-24" at each end. That may be a factor for you to consider since tables #1 and #2 are 11' long or longer when all leaves are in and your rug is only 12' long. Table 3 is about 2' shorter than the other two tables when all are without leaves, so that is important to note also. Perhaps you'll never or rarely use all the leaves, but I know that I've found that to be a small point that I wish I'd considered more when I purchased my area rug since I should have gone longer with it, but at the time I purchased it only had one leaf in my table and didn't notice the issue until I extended it for the big family gatherings that have now become fairly common. So the size of table you'll need for your various uses is a pretty significant thing to consider. Your room and the furniture choices are really lovely. It'll be fun to see the pictures of what you finally choose.

    C'mon, everyone was supposed to vote for #1's!? LOL j/k. Sorry took me awhile to get back, kids have been sick so took me awhile. Appreciate all the comments/suggestions. A few of you have me seriously thinking about the "too much going on thing" on the base of table one. I can see how with chair legs and the wainscotting that it it could be look like a beavers damn down below. All of the chairs shown do come in sidechairs. I just grabbed the endchairs, but would definitely go without arms on the sides. Between tables 2 and 3, I think I like 3 better. I looked at the detail/top view of table 2 and it's got some funky curves/corners on the actual table top itself. Table 3 is from the Kings Row collection of Hickory White, as is the sideboard. Normally, I'm far from wanting anything ornate, but for some reason I kinda like the sideboard with the feet. As a few folks have noted, it would definitely need to be flanked with substantial lamps or sconces and a hefty painting or mirrior. (haven't gotten that far yet). I do like the chairs les suggested (Terri's), but the wood on Table 3 is darker and I'm not sure how the lighter wood of the chairs would contrast with the table. I'm not a fan of our lighter floors, so wanted to go with a darker wood as opposed to blending. Suppose we could do table 3, with chair 2 (sidechairs) and figure something out on the ends. I need to price table 3 and chair 2, but table 1 was $2400 and chair 1 was $510, I think the others are going down in price which is good. The buffet in the room right now is a dresser that will disappear when we get furniture. (my head is spinning). Our initial choice was going to be the following, but have heard not so great things about Bernhardt furniture quality. Also, Im not a huge fan of the rings on the legs of the table/chairs. or the scrolls on the sideboard feet, but it was liveable.

    I think table 3 and chair two (way top above) probably dress this room better. Any suggestions...I need therapy! Have looked at most every maker and can't make a lousy decision. Where's premier?...tell me "whats up" lol. (looking for the dining room wrecking ball)

    Sujafr, great point. For everyday staging, the table would probably have 8 chairs around it. I agree that it looks silly if the chairs are on rug&floors, but wanted the option to seat 12 if needed.

    Please see my post a few above. More confused than ever, looking for some direction.

    TIA to all.
