Is this the best way to hang decorative plates?

I found these adjustable plate hangers on ebay and was wondering if this is the best way to hang decorative plates. I just ordered several plates and I want to make sure I use the right thing, so my plates don't fall off the wall and break. Do place like Hobby Lobby or Garden Ridge carry these or do you usually have to order them.

That's the type that I use to hang my plates and tole trays. They are the type I trust, rather than stick-on ones.

You can buy them at hardware stores, Wal-Mart and craft stores.

I have plates hanging from those in my kitchen and it works great. However, I recently tried those command picture hangers everyone here talks about and I love them. For something lightweight like plates, I'd use the command for sure.

I just hung some plates in my dining room. I used the adhesive discs with the attached hook, and I'm very happy with them. I had bought some of those wire and spring hangers, but after trying to attach them to the plates, decided to try the discs. Knowing what I know about vintage china and porcelain, I wouldn't use the spring type hangers, even though they're much easier to find and much cheaper.

I use only the spring type hangers on my antique and vintage plates. I get the kind that has the clear 'tubing' covering over the wire where it hits the edges of the plates or trays.

I use only that kind after reading on another board where people had the disc hangers fail and they lost plates that couldn't be replaced. Perhaps they didn't apply them correctly, but I'm old fashioned, and will stick with what has always worked for me. :-)

I too have always used the wire plate hangers. Try to find them with the little plastic sleeve, as the metal can mar the glass. They have never failed me.

I have always used the wire plate hanger as well for plates and platters. My3dogs where on earth do you find hangers to hang your big antique trays? I have often wondered how you hang them?

my3dogs. Are you saying you have the spring hangers on your trays? I love your trays. Have a couple I would like to hang but have not found hangers large enough for them.

I have found them at the local AC Moore for large items. We don't have Hobby Lobby or some of the other places mentioned on the boards here in Maine. I have linked one I just saw on eBay below, for a 14 - 20" item.

If my tray has open handles on either side. I can use monofilament fishing line to hang them. The one below is hung like that. I loop it through the handles and across the back. I have knots at each handle, then the line going across the back. It's very safe, and can be doubled or tripled if the item is heavy.

I'm just reiterating what my3dogs said because it's important and something you don't realize until you get one of these things home and begin stretching them over plates. They're taught for good reason, to keep the plate in the hanger, but that also makes it a little tricky to stretch the hanger over the rim of the plate. That's why you want the little plastic tubes on all 4 ends. It protects the plate from getting metal scratches. I don't see that in this eBay ad.

I found collectible stores carry a larger variety of sizes (for platters, etc). There aren't as many of those shops around but with the internet you can probably find them online. Container Store carries a disc hanger, I haven't tried that one yet.

Thanks, everyone! Do the ones at Walmart have the plastic tips by chance? What dept would I find those in? If they don't have the right kind, I found some at Display Collections. Has anyone bought from there? My smallest plate is 9.75" and the holders come in 7.5-9.5 size or 10-14. Would you go with the 10-14?

Thanks so much for the tray information. I am going to look for them here and then if I can not find them will do the Ebay. Had no idea they would come in such a large size. Two of my trays are just old TV trays so I used the leg clamps to hook the wires on but it is not ideal.

I used the stick on for the trays before and several came loose. YIKES startling in the middle of the night.

my3dogs. Fantastic trays. Mine were dump shopped and not even hold a candle to yours but I still love them. LOL

My3dogs you have such a wonderful collection of trays. And you have the kind of house where Thanksgiving would be wonderful. I bet your the one who always does Thanksgiving dinner.

my3dogs, I must say that whenever I scroll through a post, sometimes I am just too tired to read it all, I can immediate tell when the picture is yours. If someone hasn't said it lately - I love your home! Warm and inviting. Classy but not starchy. We should all have your eye. From my2cats (Lynn fr CT)

Oh. newdawn and lynn, You are TOO kind! I did Thanksgiving in my house ONCE, and 'my 3 dogs' are just too excited to have company and good food, and they make pests of themselves.

I love my home, too. How often is your first home the one you want to stay in forever? It's looks very different from the way it did when I bought it in 1986, though! eBay and Craigslist and auctions have made it what it is today.

I love to decorate it for the seasons, fall being my fav, but this is all I have done so far..It's been so hot and humid here this week, but has finally cooled down over night. Maybe more will get done this weekend. Lamps are from CL, mirror, antique birds eye maple bowl, and old black tray from eBay. I made the wreath from an old twiggy one, and used some mini Indian corn, and gourds - very 'harvest-y' this year.

my3dogs - I wish you lived close enough to come help me with my house. That arrangement is absolutely perfect.

Don't we all wish that, Laurie!

And msrose and flyingflower, I wish that, too! I'd love to 'shop' in someone else's house and see what we can come up with. I have found that just moving an item from one room to another gives it a new look for me.

And, I buy vintage or antique 99% of the time. It's my taste, and the things just seem to have more 'texture', depth and interest, IMO. The only new things on that mantle are the Indian corn and the gourds (Gourds are faux from a garland of them that I took apart.) The Indian corn was $2.00 at Pottery Barn after season last year and this year, I could buy the same ones there for $19!!!

msrose....I was in Michaels today and I looked at their plate hangers. They have plastic tips! Hopefully there's a Michaels near you. I don't know what I'd do without that store, lol.

my3dogs...accessorizing is the hardest thing for me to do. I really think some people have that gift and some don't. You definetely have it. I often wonder how many great things I've passed up in stores because I didn't see their potential. I bought a small half-circle table for an empty spot in my dining room a few years ago. No purpose really other than decorative. I thought, how fun it will be to decorate it. Yeah right, it's become the bane of my existance. lol Nothing i have looks good on it and I'm clueless what to buy. Last year I went on a tour of homes and one of the houses was decorated exactly how I wish mine could be. Luck have it, the homeowner has decided to become a decorator because of all the complements she receives. It comes easy to her so why not. Have you considered it? I plan on calling her next year and let her help me with the finishing touches. It's weird, I have no problem buying the big stuff like furniture but I come to a screeching halt when it's time to dress it all up.

flyingflower - Yes! I do have a Michael's. What area did you see them in?

    Laurie

Go the the back of the store where they have all the picture frames. There should be an isle where they keep all the little table top frame holders. Hanging above those shelves are the plate holders.

I've also found them in the hardware store, like Ace.

I just got back from Walmart and they had the ones with the plastic tips!

This is how I hang my decorative plates. I use the shiny black for my asian ones and the hardwood for my cardinal ones.
