Long Wide Hallway - How To Decorate? PICS

So, we've moved in here beginning of March this year and I'm not quite sure what to do with this hallway.

The hallway is to the left as you enter the house, and leads to the 3 bedrooms and bathroom. Basically, it's shaped like a backwards L if you were entering the "top of the L" - it turns to the left.

The part in the picture is 5'3" wide, the part you don't see is a "normal" hallway width.

I'm trying to figure out what to do on the left side of the picture. I thought a nice narrow console on that wall would work, but it would be in front of the grille and but every time I need to change the a/c filter, I'd have to move it. Not the worse thing in the world I guess, but would have to move whatever is put on there.

But, if I don't go that route, what else would look good along this wall? I'm not one to hang up family photos, I have a table in the living room for framed pictures, and will eventually have some type of gallery for paintings/prints in that same area. If I put a smaller table to the left of the a/c grille, would it look odd not having something to the right of the grille, or what would go to the right.

So, does anyone have any suggestions on what could be done in this area? Usually I can find something among the books and magazines I've got, if not a search on the web, but I'm coming up with bupkis. I don't want anything that will take up too much space, especially floor space.

Hudsonleigh, that may just be a great option to add a few of those types of shelves, or maybe even cubes, just not too many as again, they would be a dust magnet and I have enough dust as it is. BUT, it could be a good way to display some of the colorful glass items I have. Thanks for the idea.

Ellenm08, thanks for the link to the site - some great ideas, and OMG, such beautiful homes!!! I definitely need some waitscoting in the dining room, didn't think about that in the hallway, and that would be helpful, so will give that some serious thought.

I like the idea of the console tables, just having it in front of that a/c intake doesn't seem sensible. I have a bench that I placed in the front door foyer which I want to relocate. Wonder if putting it in the hall would be akward?? It's not like you'd sit in the hallway for any reason. Just as I couldn't see having a chair or two in the hallway. A console table, I can see that for sure.

I have an 80' L-shaped hallway, about as wide as yours, that links the guest house to the main house. Ours is an art gallery. We have a 12V cable track lighting system so that lights can be focused on the art as needed. The only time I put "furniture" in there is when I bring in large folding tables and use it as a sewing area on a temporary basis. A very shallow console would be okay, but I like it empty better. If you collect sculpture, pedestals would work there, too.

Our house in AZ had a very wide hallway and some very smart person put bookshelves in the length of it. It was a great use of the space. Never had to worry about anything getting tipped over.

Thanks for the replies. I think I have to be careful just what goes there. You can see it from my living room, which is formal (at least it's heading in that direction) I definitely don't have enought art work for that hallway - trying to do somewhat of a gallery on a wall in the living room and will need some more art for that area. While I can use some bookshelves, I wouldn't want them in the hallway - I know me, and they'll get cluttered. I need to keep it simple and clean, but still haven't figured out what it will be to get there.

How about some deep display shelves? They would add dimension and take up some of the visual space without taking away floor space, and you could arrange them around the wall without interfering with the a/c grille. Also, with shelves you can easily start out with just a few items (photos, art, sculture, whatever) and add more as you acquire it, or use them for holiday decs as well. But they're not deep enough to become clutter magnets like bookcases.

What about adding some wainscoting and runners to help fill the space like this area. I like how they placed the vase and books on the console table. The photos don't have to be of your family, they could just be scenes that you like. A set of photos (think places you've traveled, places you like -all in black and white addes a touch or formality since you'll see it from your living room.

I like the idea of wainscoting, then if you paint the grille the color of the wainscot it becomes invisible.
