Help: Tile Decision- White or Beige Rialto Porcelain Tiles from L

I told the tile guy that I decided on the Rialto Beige. Then several weeks passed and he still has not bought the tile or installed it. I asked him if it was OK to switch to Rialto White and he said yes.

I want to decide which tile (the white which is brighter with an off-white color with a light beige throughout it or the beige that has beiges and browns and is more rich looking but darkens up the two foyer areas especially the middle foyer area) since I am doing the tile first and want to have the musky smelling wood damaged middle foyer's engineered oak wood removed and replaced with porcelain tile. I keep puppy pads there when I am not home and sometimes one of my small dogs miss the pad so tile is best in the foyer area. Hence, I am doing the wood in the office area but the two foyer areas I have decided on tile that will look like real stone.

I also have pics of Lexi and Sassy, my two Maltese in the pics since I just downloaded all the digital pics to not take up too much time choosing due to a deadline I must be working on. I really need opinions so I can make a decision soon. I just am scared once I put the tile down I am stuck with it. If I did not have dogs, I would put the wood in the foyer areas also.

Here is a link that might be useful: Rialto Beige Vs. Rialto White Tile for Foyer areas

I vote the white.........based on photos.

The last 6 pics are of the middle foyer with the puppy pads next to the utility door and garage door to show what I do when I am not home. I am sorry to bother you and I guess I should have reduced the pics but I am in the middle of a major deadline and I can't stop obsessing about which tile so I thought if I shared and checked for opinions later on, I can get back to work and not feel so overwhelmed on making a wrong decision.

You can do a slide show or just select pics to see. I have two close ups of each tile that I labeled. I also like foyers with dark or medium colored rich tiles but I did not have time to show those foyer pics. I found a pic I love that is a big foyer area with lots of light. My home is not like that since I live in an interior townhouse and do not open the blinds all the way for privacy as I work hence that pic may be pretty but my home will never look like that.

Some of you had told me that the beige tiles did not go with the cherry wood I was choosing and I should go lighter or darker so that is why I am asking which tile. I have so many deadlines today but I just need input before I call the tile guy to let him know my final decision and I am scared that I will either make my two foyer areas too dark (mainly the middle foyer area) looking or too white (mainly the front foyer area since the white tile looks very nice in the middle foyer and appears light beige while the beige look rich looking in the front foyer).

I guess I am no longer in love with tile in the foyers and wish I could put warm wood there but I must have tile since sometimes the puppy pads are missed and I do not want a new wood floor ruined.

Both of these tiles look like real stone to me and seems to be easy to clean and have not gotten dirty despite walking on them for 5 days now.

My suggestion would be to forget about the tile, finish your work and when you have more time make a decision between the two colors. Since there's such an indecision, maybe you should look at more tiles?

We have Rialto Beige, so you know which I prefer, LOL. It is a very nice look and texture for the price. When we bought the house, there was white tile in the kitchen and it showed everything. We tore that out and put in the RB and liked it so much better. We've since opened the kitchen to the living/dining. Because we wanted hardwood everywhere, we tore out the RB (with very little loss/breakage of tile). We are about to remodel the bathrooms with the 'old kitchen floor'.

That being said, based upon your insiration photo, it looks like you would like the white better.

    I like them both.

We used rialto beige for our backsplash in the kitchen. I know it's not on the floor, but here is a picture:

what is the color of your granite. I like it very much.
    Sorry for the hijack

Why don't you just put laminate down? I don't have dogs, but I potty-trained a 4-yr old last year in new house with tile, it's not waterproof! I had to scrape out some of the grout from around the toilet when she didn't make it, even though it was sealed it still discolored and stank! Unless you want to pay for epoxy grout? I think that's more water-resistant, maybe even waterproof?

Annz, thank you for voting with the white. I have had so many tiles here as samples and most are so thin and look so fake to me while the Rialto Series tiles to me look like real stone. If the tile guy would have installed the tile already, I would have not been going back and forth since then I was sure I loved the Rialto Beige so much. But since I am able to make a choice now that the tile guy has not bought the tile or grout yet, and since I have seen the white in my home due to a client friend bringing me home samples(did not like the white tiles in the store since they looked boring to me but on the floor with a lot of them, they are pretty to me in my home), I am confused since I like both a lot.

I have seen a foyer in my complex with smooth white tiles (not other color in them) that I did not like. I think I like the inspiration picture since the room is so light and airy but my foyers will never look like that.

I like the white but I think the beige may be lower maintenance. I think I like the white in the middle foyer since it looks like a light beige there and I like the Rialto Beige in the front foyer in the day time when there is sun since it looks so rich there. I thought it was best to use the same tile in both areas.

Debb, I changed the 60 watt bulb to the maximum 100 watt bulb before taking the photos of the middle foyer in the last 8 pictures (not sure if they are showing up in the slide show so you may have to just click view all pics and go to the second page to see the last 2... I guess I should have picked out the best 10 pictures instead of showing them all... sorry... ). The extra light helped but the tile shows up to me more brown in the middle foyer while the white shows up light beige in the middle foyer like I wanted. The front foyer is so pretty in the day time with the Rialto Beige but at night it looks dark since the area is small and it is next to putty cabinets.

Marzhere, thanks for letting me know that you liked the Rialto Beige better.

Robin2007, the Rialto Beige looks great as a back-splash in your kitchen and looks nice with the wood also and the beautiful counters. I think the white door and stools keeps the room bright. I love your kitchen floors also and that pretty wall color. Thanks for sharing. You have a beautiful kitchen.

Ajsmama, I tested the thick 12 MM glossy laminate and it held up well to pee and scratches but I am sure if enough pee got in the seam it will smell. I have sealed grout upstairs in an ivory tile in my middle hall bathroom and it is easy to clean the pee up for me and the smell goes away. Hence, I feel a sealed grouted Porcelain tile is good for that foyer area.

I am going back and forth with BR-111 Triangulo Brazilian Cherry floors for the area that is not the foyer area or the Bruce Exotic Wonders 12 MM Laminate with attached Pad in Brazilian Cherry that holds up well to scratches and pee. My doggies are so little and I keep their nails short so I am only worried about scratches from visitors.

A client just left so I feel a little more relaxed now that I posted this and then I can read the answers and in a few days decide what to do.

Thanks lynn. You'll have to let us know what you decide on!

ajsmama, have you sealed your grout? If it's sealed then it becomes more able to stand up against things like potty-training (kids or dogs!).

Nettie, the granite is New Venetian Gold. Thanks!

Robin, I also love your New Venetian Gold Granite (perfect for your kitchen and so rich and beautiful) that would be perfect in my kitchen when I am ready to renovate the kitchen. I did all the blinds and window treatments in my home, painted my rooms, and now I am doing the floors. Then I will work on the other things in my house that need updating.

Robin2007, what stain is on your floors and what wood species are your floors since I love the color. Also what paint color is on your walls since it is the perfect color for your kitchen?

Ok, I only looked through the first 10 or so images, however I personally would go with the beige. I like the look of the white quite a bit (knowing what your inspiration is), but with dogs, puppy pads, and the fact that it is an entry and the tile looks like it is pitted I think it would be awfully hard to keep it crisp and clean looking. I think the beige would be much more forgiving and I don't think it's too dark.

I think either one will work in your space. I have off-white tiles with cream, taupe and a little touch of brown and mine don't show dirt which I love.

I like the warmer tile with your woods. The white is too abrupt a shift, for me. I think it will show dirt and smudges more, too.

Thank you everyone. It really helped to post the pics for myself as well as reading the replies and seeing the Rialto Beige back-splash in the kitchen walls. I really dislike cleaning so I am leaning back towards my first decision with the warmer Rialto Beige that has beiges and browns in it so will be easier to keep clean. I love the white tiles but the pits are getting dirty already while I can't notice any dirt on the darker tiles. I tried to find a tile a little lighter than the Rialto Beige but darker than the Rialto White that looked like real stone and was a Porcelain and was not slippery but so far it has not happened. I got tile numbers from those on the list of tiles I liked but I could not find the tiles so maybe they are not sold in NJ.

When the furniture is removed in here, I must repaint the room since the painter had only painted one coat of the Linen White and painted around the file cabinets. Would a warmer color help on the walls? There is no windows on the others side of the room so I was afraid to go too dark.

Any other opinions will be greatly appreciated or sharing pics of their foyers with tiles.

Lynn, I *need* window treatments! I keep putting it off because I have no idea what to do or where to start. With it being a "great room" with the dining are and living room in one space, I struggle to know what direction to go in.

Our floor is "oak", but it's actually laminate. I'm not sure of the color.
Our paint is from "Ace" and the paint brand is called Ace Sensations. I recently discovered that Ace Hardware is not found in all locations. But, the color is Wheat Ridge and we had it mixed 50% lighter than the paint chip card. It looks kind of green on the paint chip card, but not once it's on the wall. We were told to go with something that has green undertones to make the paint look more neutral and not too pink or yellow. So we did just that, and we are really happy with the color.

I should also mention that when we were choosing our flooring, I was dead set against oak. I told the flooring people that I didn't even want to look at oak because I don't like it. I don't care for all of the heavy "swirling" that oak offers.
One day we were browsing at a flooring store and I saw this floor sample and fell in love with it. I didn't realize that it was indeed "oak". It doesn't have much of the swirling in it at all. It has more of a knotty look to it. So, I had to eat my words and tell our flooring people that I had selected oak. :)

robin, Thanks for letting me know the floors are oak laminate. It amazes me that I keep liking oak floors when I too had been dead set against oak floors due to not liking my veneer oak cabinets that came with my townhouse and this cheap oak engineered wood floors in the foyers that have very thick coarse grain in them that is very busy. Maybe I would even be open to an engineered oak floor that is not too grainy that is stained cherry. I also am still open to laminate but due to my cherry furniture in my office, I had my heart set on a cherry wood floor with tiled foyers. I just wish my foyers were bigger but I live in North Jersey and as single person needing a lot of square footage to have a big home office as well as lots of personal space, the stylish townhouse fit me better. If I sold my townhouse and moved south, I could get a really nice house with a big beautiful foyer but I am realizing being alone, I am not yet ready to move with my clients here an my clients are so nice. The location I live in is expensive and I chose this townhouse over the house with more land and more bedrooms that was the same price due to the location not appealing to me.

Thanks also Robin for letting me know the paint color. It truly is very neutral and may be nice in my home office to warm up the walls. I will try a sample out when I am ready to repaint.

I love all my window treatments in my home I chose except for my first choice that is in the home office. I dislike the long strings of my Alta (a division of Hunter Douglas) double honeycomb blinds since they are always messy and tangling. I dislike the neutral color I chose (an off-white with a taupe faint design in it that looks great in the day time) at night since the blinds then appear gray. I wish I went with the 3/4" size pleat rather than the 1/2" size pleat. But I did not make these mistakes again and I learned that it is worth paying a little more for retractable cords or continuous loop cords or going cordless if you are tall (I am not).

When you are ready for blinds, let me know and I will take pics of my other window treatments that I love especially my Champaign colored Shangri-La sheer horizontal blinds in my family room that has a cathedral ceiling and a wall of windows. The blinds really make the room so bright and happy and goes so well with the Bone White walls and bright white trim. Everyone who sees them loves them. I also love my retractable corded top-down bottom up Architella black-out Duet blinds in the linen color in my bedroom softened up with crinkled soft white sheers around them.

annz, I am taking your advice and putting the tile decision off until my deadline ends. Then I will bring the Rialto beige tile to stores to see if I can find something similar but lighter or more beige and less brown in it. I guess I should have not been looking now but the damaged floor is bothering me so much that I thought I could make a quick decision and I like the quality and close up look of the Rialto Beige tiles but I like the farther away look of the lighter tiles that look dirty up close after only a few days on the floor (I put the samples on the floor to walk on to see how they get).

I haven't read all the posts, but I wanted to say that we had Rialto white at our last house. I loved it! We used charcoal grey grout (we had black accents) and it truly was a lovely floor that didn't show dirt because of those lovely "veins" and cracks, or whatever you call them. We're using Rialto Beige in our current home and I'm not at all sure I'll like this as much as the white.

sdionnemoore, Thank you so much for replying. I have both samples ( a few of each tile on the floor right now) and I still like the Rialto White since it is light but not white in person (off-white with a light beige/taupe in it) and brightens up the area. How about the pits though that look like dirt is in them while the Rialto Beige looks like no dirt is in the pits.

Why don't you like the Rialto Beige in your current home as much. Do you have any pictures of each tile? Again I really appreciate your response.

Honestly, Lynn, I think the white Rialto got some of the grout in the pits. . .but I still loved it more than I think I'm liking the Beige. I tend to like more light and bright colors (Read: White :)) more than browns, so I think that's the huge reason Beige Rialto isn't "taking" with me.

The dirty pits of the white rialto didn't bother me, I think they gave the floor that much more interest. But that's me.

I wish I did have pics of the WR, but I don't. I do have a pic of the beige I can upload. Hold on a sec. . .

I tried to get pics with the flash and without. The floors are not clean, so that might affect the way they look a bit. As you'll see in the sample and on this floor, the BR still has the pock mark thingies. Maybe because we used a lighter grout they don't show up as much as they did with the WR.

One other thing, I liked the white Rialto because of the grey in it--I'm a grey person. :)

sdionnemoore, Thank you so much for sharing the pics. The Rialto Tiles are very pretty on my screen with beige, reddish brown and gray veins in them, along with the pits that are not pin heads like on the Rialto White Tile but at least on my tiles, they are not that deep and seem to be easy to clean. Are you going to clean out the grout from the tile or leave it in the pits? What color is your grout?

Please post updated pics when the floor is cleaned up with furniture on it. Thank you again.

I am a light tile/floor person I am finding out. I seem to like light walls and light floors and cherry furniture. I dislike the color gray so despite the Rialto White looking more gray at night and matching the neutral honeycomb blinds that also get gray at night, I only seem to like that tile in the light in the daytime. The Rialto Beige I only seem to like in the front foyer in the daytime. But then again if I get too light of a tile, it may be difficult for me to clean since I have a lot of traffic during the winter time in my home since I have a home office.

My friend brought me over big samples of the Brazilian Cherry that is absolutely gorgeous but next to me desk it just looks so dark and now I am wondering if I need a light wood floor.

Sounds like your heart is saying White Rialto. :) I probably won't clean the crevices in the Beige Rialto. I'm just not that worried about dirt caught in a little hole. Though I am a neat freak, I've really tried (and overcome to a great degree) the need to obssess about such things.

Brazilian Cherry is beautiful. We almost went with it, but with its tendency to darken even more over time. . .so we went with Bruce White Oak.

Best wishes on your decision. If you need something else, holler!

sdionnemoore, I am still undecided on the tile since the choice will depend on the wood I choose.

My friend's huge sample from his friend the installer of the Brazilian Cherry has me thinking now that it may not work out despite how beautiful it is. He brought me two samples of what it looked like before getting darker and 7 bigger planks next to one another of too skinny boards at 2.25 " wide ( at least I found out I do not like a board less than 3" wide)and the colors are so rich but some of the boards are darker than my desk. Also in parts of the room, the very big sample looks so dark where there is not much light and other parts of the room where there is light the big sample of various colored boards looks rich and pretty. I am now worried that the parts of the room without windows will look so much lighter than the parts of the room that gets sunlight. Maybe the floor will look blotchy and I will be unhappy.

So despite being in love with the Brazilian Cherry, I am now thinking that I need a floor that does not have such a dramatic color change from UV light.

I wanted a reddish floor but maybe I can live with my reddish desk being the highlight of the room instead. Now I am thinking Amendoim again.

Did you put a stain on your Bruce White Oak floors? What size width did you choose? What cut of the wood did you get? Any pics?

    Robin2007,

I know that this is an old thread but thought I'd take a chance to see if I would get a response about your rialto beige tile backsplash. Do you remember the brand , type and color of the grout you used with it? Thanks!
