I just repainted my bedroom from black. The only reason was because it made the carpet stand out too much. And I would like to have black hardwood which would be too much black.

It can work very well if you know what you are doing. My favorite is Kelly Proxmire's black bedroom.

Not black, but here is a brown bedroom. I have already posted this in another thread. I think what the Kelly Proxmire room and this one have in common are generous doses of crisp white, unlike the home DH and I looked at where the teenaged son had painted everything black and it looked like a cave.

Those are stunning! I have been toying with the idea of painting a room black myself. I think, if I did, I would use a high-quality matte-finish paint to keep it "rich" looking.

My bedroom is not black but is a very, very dark gray. As you can see from the above posted rooms the trick is to use lighter toned neutrals and just one or two tiny items of color. Don't go black with bold splashes of color tossed everywhere. Use the 60/30/10 rule.
