Have you read Bilhuber's latest book? Good?

Has anyone read Jeffrey Bilhuber's latest book, The Way Home: Reflections on American Beauty? I am a fan of many of his colorful projects, but haven't seen the book. I'm wondering what your critique is.

I am assuming you wanted this on the conversations side. So I am answering so that it will descend.
I have not read the book.

So happy to see your name! I have such a special place in my heart for kitchendetective.

I've been reading many mini-reviews of his book but I haven't seen it myself: all I've read have been positive, but the blurbs were in shelter mags so they're predisposed, I would guess. The reviews on Amazon were both quite positive, one was esp. detailed.

I've always liked the rooms of his I've seen.

I'm also kinda interested in Martyn Lawrence Bullard's book as I got a real kick out of him on the Bravo tv show. His interiors (on the tv program) didn't do much for me but I did like his personality. Don't know if that flamboyance will come through in the book, however ....

Muriel Brandolini and I found one another in Venice because we both had on the same sunglasses, and they are outrageous. It was easy to see one another and feel a kindred spirit! (They're the ones Peggy Guggenheim wore and can be found in the gift shop in her museum there.) So I also have a soft spot for her new book, although admittedly it's not high on my list.

If you get the Bilhuber book I hope you enjoy!

Hi, rm, so good to hear from you! LOL about the Muriel Brandolini/Peggy Guggenheim story. Great minds. . .
I read JB's first book and found it useful, even though I was unable to love all the beige. Then I saw a mag spread about his house and there was so much COLOR. I fell in love. Have been unable to find the new book in a store, so I guess I'll have to break down and order it online, sight unseen.
One of my all time favorite kitchens (although this particular HB photo is not the best):

    I love seeing kitchens that make me want to cook and wouldn't get their feelings hurt if I made a useful mess. ;

If you buy it from BN.com, you can return it with 14 days to the store so no return shipping costs.

I never knew that! Thank you.

If you are returning to Barnes & Noble, you must have your receipt from inside your package! I forgot to mention that.

Well, I bought it, sight unseen, and it turned out to be wonderful. Not the greatest in production quality, but that almost makes the makes viewing the rooms more like actually inhabiting them. I've never worked with a designer on a personal, residential project, although I have worked with designers on commercial spaces, and very successfully. Were I to inhabit the realm in which famous designers are hired, however, Bilhuber would be my first choice. I just think he's great.

I just got my copy in the mail today and that's all I've been doing is reading that book. I can't tear myself away from it.

It's gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!!!! The text is plentiful and well worth reading. The photos are to die for. It's very much about lived-in, eclectic houses, not rigid or styled within an inch of their lives. Each place has a ton of heart and soul and are beautifully photographed. Love, love, love.

It is now my #1 decorating book of all time, tied with Bunny Williams' "An Affair with a House".

I checked it out on Amazon - if you 'look inside' the book, Amazon displays lots and lots of pages of the books -- more than I've ever seen them do before. Maybe it's new, because you can now scroll down the images, too, rather than sideways like thru' a slideshow.

Here is a link that might be useful: Amazon

    Thanks mjlb. That was delightful.

His work is so comfortable and colorful. And lived in.

My most favorite designers are Mark Hampton ~he is my love story as far as design goes (gone too soon, RIP). Also have much appreciation for Colfax and Fowler and Sister Parish. Would there be something for me in this book?

forhgtv, I can see returning a book if there is something wrong with it, but do you read them and then return them used?

Not forhgtv, but I don't really see anything wrong with ordering a book, flipping through it to get a feel, and then returning it if it was something I didn't care to keep. I tend to look though my favorite decor books over and over - probably hundreds of times - and if I ordered a book and knew I wasn't going to do that with it, I'd have no qualms about returning it.

Just don't take it into the bathroom like George did in that episode of Seinfeld. ;-D

aj, you're right. Having worked in retail for decades I have a thing about people returning items after getting their use out of them - I jumped to conclusions.

I have not seen that episode of Seinfeild!

Please gw friends, ignore my comment and continue with the Bilhuber discussion....
