Need Help! All Over the Place w/ Lighting

Well, the contractor has moved inside to work on some of our electrical issues. One of the things being done is finally having 2 hallway fixtures repaired and replaced and the addition of a 3rd fixture to the upstairs hallway. I am totally all over the place w/ this lighting thing and the electrician will be ready for lighting soon and I have to make choices.

I'm trying to stay true-ish to the home, not spend a ton of money since we will sell soon after all work is complete, be something that I can live w/ until it sells.

House background:
1908 traditional brick American 4 Square

Leans Victorianish on the inside w/ the heavy dark woodtrim & stained glass

Hallways are narrow and tall

Spots where fixtures will go:

Old pic of Entry Hall facing the front (that was a temporary plug in light that has remained for 13yrs.). We're finally getting a hardwired fixture. I've never liked how a chandelier hangs down in this narrow space. I feel like my view has always somehow been obstructed even though the ceilings are 9 feet.

Facing back:

What is currently hanging there (and you can see how narrow the space is & the 'flow)

Between rooms

Saw this today while out and liked it for entry hall:

And a fixture has to go on the landing. The window is nearly wall to wall and almost floor to ceiling. I want a light very low profile so as not to compete w/ the window.

Saw this small one and thought it might work on the landing & coordinate w/ the other one:

I would use the same small fixture in the upper hallway. There has never been a light up there and we will be very happy when we do!

I am totally open to suggestions.

I also really liked this one for one of the smaller sections of our hall but I couldn't find a coordinating piece for the longer entry hall. Also didn't know if it would be an appropriate style and age of the house.

I just don't think that I have the volume of space in my hall to pull off a chandelier or hanging lantern of any size.

    P. S. What a great home! The woodwork is fantastic! Can you post more pictures of the home, or have I missed them in previous postings?

I would love to have your beautiful home. That window looks fantastic and I would also love to see more pics of it.

I really like the fixtures that Chibi posted. Out of the two you posted I think the first has an antique look but the second one is too contemporary.

Though I understand your crystal selections might be a way to dress up and feature the hallways, the quality of the light from these fixtures casts some very strange shadows and colors in narrow, walled hallways, & these 2 very different selections seem not quite appropriate for the style of your home. Chibimimi's fixture selection for your home, is right for the architecture, but I think it's a bit plain, and I have never been a fan of fixtures where I can see the bare light bulb when I look up at the fixture.

I would recommend you limit your selections to light fixtures with finishes in either bronze or antique brass to coordinate with the architecture of your home. .Since your home's architecture favors art glass, I am suggesting fixtures that also feature art glass.

I understand your request for a lovely, moderately priced fixture, so I have limited these selections to items I found on-line at Lowes, like your original selection. Easy to purchase or return if needed.

I suggest you have a slightly dropped pendant for your foyer, and coordinating semi flush fixtures in the two other locations. In all locations the light emitted by the fixture will shine up and down, and should illuminate your halls nicely.

I LOVE the first one!! The second is too modern.

    You have an incredible home!!

    Foxespad,

I love your home and everything you do. IN fact seeing it again gives me more confidence that I needn't paint my woodwork in my new home!

    However ...

First, if you are selling anytime soon, do not do any of these lighting projects! What you have is lovely! Pocket the money for your next house.

Second, I liek the first one but not the second (the stem is too modern IMHO). But agree that these fixtures cast annoying shadows in most cases.

Are your ceilings painted black now? It's an interesting concept. Nicely shaped fixtures should really stand out with the black as a backdrop..

    Back!

Our home is like a demolition zone. Hides my lack of time for house keeping lol!

About the lighting, there is currently no hardwired light in the downstairs hallway. There once was and it's been long gone and the wiring and hole in the ceiling are still there.

For the landing I literally just couldn't bear (? right bear?) looking at the heinous light that was there so it is not even an option.

In the upstairs there never was a light and it is very dark especially at night. We stumble around in the dark and use the lighting from the bedrooms to see at night.

Since the electrician was fixing certain issues we decided to have him just add a line for an upstairs fixture. Our wiring is primarily still knob and tube which he said is in remarkable condition but the PO was a wannabe electrician and there's a lot of crazy crap going on. ie: fire hazards.

As far as crystals bouncing weird light, that already happens w/ the leaded glass doors in the downstairs hall. It's actually one of the reasons I love my walls white in there - there are always little rainbows dancing on the walls. The stained glass window casts odd light anyways. The entire center looks clear but it is actually pink, casting a lovely pink glow everywhere. That means it was impossible to pick a color to paint the walls because it always took on the pink cast.

Anyhoo - I signed off on the addition of an upstairs light today and I like this one. Not wild about the shiny base but I can fix that and am open to doing that. The upstairs hallway is white walls, white trim & 1 large wall sized mirror in a gold frame and small gold framed scenic lithographs.

Could something like this on a larger scale work downstairs? Seems to share some of the similar features like the milk glass/ alabaster shade as some of those suggested.

The back wall of the downstairs hallway is the first thing that you see when you open the French doors and walk in the house. I have this very large canvas to go on that wall when the dust settles inside. It takes up almost the entire wall:

Or do you think the 1st one would look better downstairs?
There is no other artwork or anything else in the entry hall.

I love the mix of old and new so I purposely decided to play up the mix by only using black and white photos in gallery frames in the downstairs. I was hoping that may open up my lighting options to being able to be a bit more eclectic if desired.

I really need to look at Rejuvenation. I used to get their catalogs.

No mntredux, you do not have to paint dark wood. I'm so glad that I always refrained from doing so downstairs. One of my most favorite homes was that of Tricia Foley's NYC Brownstone. All of that dark wood paired w/ her signature white, light and simple décor was breathtaking.

    Beverly27,

Thank you for posting those lights and letting me know where you got the pics. I've spent so much time on the Lowes & HD websites but I just get so overwhelmed w/ all of the choices! You gave me good direction there - thank you!

My downstairs hall ceilings are painted black. Instead of trying to make my entry hall seem wider w/ paint, I decided to play up how narrow it is. I absolutely positively love my black ceilings and have for several yrs!

I just bought 2 exterior lights there today for our front porch which should soon be done. I was just told that my porch column bases were finished and are ready to be picked up by the contractor.

First of all, your house is stunning! It has some of the most charming details I've ever seen before. Disclaimer: I don't have a background on appropriate lighting for your house's style/era/charm. That said, I like the first light and I like the last light in a different finish (antique brass maybe?). I also like the light fixture that Chibimimi posted. The second fixture you posted is too modern.

I just did an ebay search "antique lighting" and saw so many cool fixtures.... many of which would look great in your spaces...

If you have antique stores in your area - I'd consider checking their inventory.
