how to chose rug size for dining room & living rooms.

Ok, I need advice on size of rugs and if they should match. Here is pic of rooms. The rug in the living area is going bye bye. Actually the one I like is just like it but is that black version. But I am not sure if it will look good with the one in dining room being more formal, which I think it should be. Anyhoo...

I want rugs under table and in living space. Should they match?? Also, how big should the dining room rug be. diningroom is about 11x13. We only extend leaves during holidays. We are putting in laminate flooring so I was thinking about an 8x10 to allow about 2' of wood around perimeter of room. But when I extend the table, the person at open end of room will be off the rug. I could add a temporary rug at end for them to be on. It is only for a day or so so I am not really concerned about the look of the extra rug. What should I do, what do you all do??

Also, should the rug in the living area match the dining room? I could get matching rugs but do the dining room one in black background and the livingroom one in a tan background. What do you all recommend or do??

Thanks all.

When you say the rug in the living area is going away, do you mean the w/w carpet is going to be taken away everywhere we see it in the picture? Is there hardwood under the carpet or what will be there?

Leaving about a foot of space between an area rug and the wall is a good look. I prefer big rugs in big spaces, especially under a dining table. Too small, and with a table and chairs on top, it looks odd to me.

I have a LR and DR spaced somewhat like yours. I have two oriental rugs that complement each other, but they don't match. The space between the rugs is large enough that each (and the room furniture) defines its own area. But if you had two great rugs that matched, I think that would be fine, too. Any links to show us? How about a floor plan to visualize the floor space better?

Here is a pic of the livingroom side. The entire dining and livingroom space will be laminate wood. The room is long with a large opening that defines the rooms more. The distance from rug to rug will be at least 5'. The rug that is under the coffee table will be going, along with all the white carpet. I measured the 8x10 and it would fit nicely in the dining space, the one that will be with the sofa will be 5x7, which is size that is there now. I still wonder about matching or not.

    update...
American blinds decorator emailed me that standard size for dining table rug is 8x10. She also said that it would be fine to have two different rugs as long as same colors.

Can any of you show me pics of your two rugs that are not the same, or two that are. And any pics of large rug under table would be helpful. Thanks.

Plus this is just another excuse to show off our rooms.

Okay, I'll play because I'm stuck at home today waiting for workers to fix things on my punch list. I have 3 rugs that match and one that doesn't in my dining room. If you stand in the middle of my Great Room which also needs a rug by the way, you can see all the rugs at the same time.

Dining room rug is 8 x 10 (black, brown, burgundy & cream)

Entry way rug a few feet from dining room is 5'8" x 3'10"
    (Green, Burgundy, tan)

Kitchen Nook (5'x7') is the same rug as the entry way and back door
    (Green, Burgundy, tan)
