What type of lamp would you use here (pic)

I love to read in bed, and need to get some sort of lamp that will provide good lighting as well as look good in this spot. Our bedroom is a funky-shaped attic conversion (lots of little nooks and crannies), and the furniture will stay arranged as shown in this pic. Note that there's a table just slightly behind my side of the bed, and the pic shows a table lamp on it. That lamp is no longer there (sold it in a garage sale - it was too bulky and terrible to read by). I presently have a swing-arm floor lamp standing next to my side of the bed, but it's in the way, and just looks silly there.

So ... I want to find a new lamp to go on the table that's sort of behind where I sit to read in bed. What do you think would work well here? Some sort of desk lamp/goose-neck lamp? (Although I don't know if I've ever seen that type that would be tall enough. I basically need a lamp that will shine over my shoulder, if that makes sense!)

auntjen - Would a floor lamp work or did you get rid of the swing arm because you didn't like a floor lamp there? DH and I read in bed every night and he likes the light to shine from above and over his shoulder also. He has a floor lamp like the one shown here next to the recliner and he won't let me move it. It swivels for the right angle and he won't hear of replacing it with a table lamp. Not suggesting one just like this but just an idea for a style/shape that would shine the light over your shoulder in bed.

Well, I hadn't thought of putting a floor lamp in that nook behind me, but that is a consideration! I'd have to get rid of the table that's currently there, as it completely fills that spot and leaves no room for a floor lamp to go behind the bed. The floor lamp that I have there presently sits next to the bed, outside of that little nook where the table is, and just looks like, well, a floor lamp that I stuck there temporarily! I think my current floor lamp is a bit too tall to fit into that nook, so I'd have to look for a shorter one, and would also have to find a smaller table to go next to it. Gotta have somewhere to put my books. :-)

    Thanks for the idea!

It took me forever to find a good reading lamp for in bed. I got mine at target, and they still carry them in the store. It is extremely adjustable. The way I use it is to have it shine on the book from my side, rather than over my shoulder. It moves really far away from the base. It also has a metal shade and I can easily read with the shade quite low, so that it doesn't disturb my husband. I think it would also be tall enough to go over your shoulder, it really stretches.

I am not sure about the lamp however I wanted to let you know that I love your bedroom. All that wood, it is gorgeous.

I thought of either an architect lamp like Daisyadair linked you to or a swing arm wall fixture that isn't hard wired......

What about a pharmacy lamp? It wouldn't make a big statement but would serve the purpose.

    Ohhh J-e-n......
My favorite junque shop has a green glass shaded bankers lamp that is adjustable....bribe....bribe....

Thank you all for these suggestions! That's a cool looking lamp, Daisy. I'll take a look the next time I'm at Target and see if they have it here.

Thanks for your nice words, Joanne! The wood-wrapped bedroom makes it feel really cozy to me. :-)

Justgota - I had actually thought about wall-mounted swing-arms, and will have to revisit that thought. Everything about the bed placement on the wall is funky, though, so I'm not sure how that would work.

Ooooh, Jaybird! You're a temptress, for sure! How tall is that lamp, do ya know?

I love this one -- I think the height is about right too -- but just not sure about the light output with the mica shade. (And of course, that's what I like about it -- the mica shade!)

I am pretty sure they make floor lamps with small tables built in too.

Something like this.....First one I found, but I am sure there are lots of styles. Of course my cats would knock this over in about a minute.

Just wanted to echo laurience's praise for your bedroom. (I don't have any ideas about your lamp either!)

When I first saw your pic I thought it was out of a magazine. Then read on & discovered... that room is in your house! It's absolutely adorable, charming & cozy as cozy could be.

    Good luck w/the lamp search!

Boop, my cats would knock that over in a heartbeat too! I've actually seen vintage tables with lamps "built in" that might work well in that space, though. The table part would have to be rather substantial in order to hold my books.

What do you guys think about a vintage tole lamp? I remember these from my childhood, so I feel a bit nostalgic (in a good way!) when I see them. I don't think these are adjustable, though, and am not sure about what kind of light they'd give off for reading.

    Aw, thank you Stinky!

And speaking of something "Stinky" - I'm actually rather horrified at this bedroom at the moment. As I type, DH is at home washing bed linens and pillows, because Sunny the kitten decided to spray the freakin' bed yesterday afternoon. He's the kitten that we have yet to be able to catch to take him to the vet for neutering. Yes, I live in a house full of animals, two of which are so wild that we can come close, but they won't let us touch them. (We caught Tiki, Sunny's brother, in a humane trap and were able to transport him to the vet in that for his little snippin' - although Sunny has been far too "smart" to fall for that trick.) ::sigh::

I'm trying to make myself feel better about the current stinkiness of this room by focusing on lamps. ;-)

I think that little vintage tole lamp is very cute too auntjen and would fit in with your style. Here's another interesting one from Target, a cantilever lamp. Also, I found an adjustable architect style like daisyadair posted at target in orb finish with tiffany shade that is cute. I use it in my office. I can take a pic if you wanna see.

If "Uncle Jen" doesn't read in bed, can you just trade sides? It looks like there is a light at the perfect height on the other side.

Could you use a wall mounted swing lamp like these?

This one I attached to an old door which I am using as a headboard:

How about TWO wall sconces that shine down on each side of the bed?? Which might be nice to unify the look on each side .....

This is just one idea ......

JUST a weird thought to throw onto the fire ......

Maybe an adjustable one like this on the wall above each side of the bed?

They make swing arm table lamps. And I found one with a mica shade.

You can also try searching for a desk lamp, like this one: http://www.csnceilingfans.com/asp/show_detail.asp?sku=rab2275&refid=BR53-rab2275

Or a piano lamp--they might be too short for what you want, but they usually have two hinged parts, so they can be positioned exactly where you want them.

I know that this is not the best looking lamp out there but do I ever love it.
It has great top lighting if you need it in room at times and then has a very good reading light. You can put on either one and they both are on dimmers.

auntjen, google "bridge lamp" images. I have several of these and love them for reading. One in the sitting room by the couch and one by a chair in the living room. Looked for pictures but must have off loaded them to my external hard drive that is not presently hooked up. On a bridge lamp the light actually extends out from the pole.

Auntjen, just wanted to say, I love your bedroom, it looks too warm and cozy! I liked the tole lamp from ebay. Good luck!

Thanks so very much for all of the wonderful suggestions! I shuffled lamps around from other parts of the house last night, trying to see if I had anything that would work in this bedroom space, but I really don't. I also considered wall sconces, but the way the bed sits on the wall, there's really no way to use them without creating a really off-center look. Too, the ceilings in this room are low, and I'm afraid of sitting up in bed at night and binging my head on an overhead lamp. ;-) So I pretty much ruled out sconces. That cute little black toleware lamp just caught my fancy, although it probably is not the best choice for reading - so I bid on it yesterday. Unfortunately, somebody else wanted it more than I, and I was outbid. Today I have my eye on this one:

Not quite as cute as the black lamp, but the bid is much lower, so we shall see.

    Thanks again!

I won the bid on the little white lamp! Yay! I was the only bidder, and got it for a whopping $5.99! (Shipping is about $15, so it's a bargain!) It's tall, so I'm hoping it will be the right height for shedding light on my book while I'm in bed. I think it will. Thanks again for all of the suggestions. If this doesn't work out, I'm going to be searching for a tall table-top swingarm lamp.

Thats a cute lamp you got and a good price.
I hope it works out for you.
