Nightstand(s) and lamp(s)

I'm here asking for help again. Y'all are going to be very sick of me soon, I'm sure. Please have mercy!

I'm moving along on decorating one of our guest rooms. I have the bed, bedding and some art work. (I haven't hung the artwork yet because I may move the bed left or right, so you will have to use your imagination.) Also, if you tell me you hate it, anything (except the bed frame) can be returned at this point.

I'm stymied on nightstands and would also like your input on bedside lamps. For the nightstands, I don't need "normal" storage. Ideally, I'd like to use a short (24") book shelf so that I can put favorite novels on the shelves for guest. I'm thinking of scouring local thrift/antique shops and painting whatever I find, but I'm very open to suggestions. Do you have any? I think unless they are very slim, I only have room for one. Should I go slim and put one on either side since this is a king size bed?

For the lamp(s), I'm thinking of pulling the orange or brown color. I'd like this to be a strong accent. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you so much for looking!

Jaymie

Jaymie, don't ever feel like you post too much. That's what we are all here for!
I love what you've done so far. I wouldn't change anything at this point! As for the night stands I'd think about finding some plant stands. If it's not too late you might be able to find some on clearance. They'd be small enough you could easily have two. They also come in different heights, often with shelves below where you could put your books!

My memory is horrible, but I just saw a little round table with a place on the bottom to hold a couple or magazines or books. Let me see if I can remember where I saw it and let you know. I don't remember the dimensions of the table so I don't know if it would be too large for your application. I'm thinking I saw it on the Penney's site since I'm always there. I'll go look and let you know.

There are a few to look at. Because I have this stupid iVillage bug in my computer, you'll have to click on the site, back out then click on it a second time to get the screen with the accent tables.

    Thank you guys!

justgotabme, Plant stands are a wonderful idea. I was coming up very short when searching online. Everything was too big for my space or a nightstand with drawers, but what you suggest might be the ticket.

brutuses, Those are some great side tables. I love the open shelves and the "roundness" of the tables. Exactly what I was thinking of. I want to "soften" this room. The rest of our house is so angular, which I love, but I want a room where guest can relax, grab a good book and just feel "at home", even if it isn't their home.

Thank you both so much! Jaymie

I looovee your guest room and the colors you have chosen. I especially like the window view.

Thank you Joanne, Do you especially like the dirt pile? LOL! They broke ground on the house next to us last week, which was the BIG motivator for the roman shades. We have huge windows in that room. I'm hoping when then house next to us is done, the actual structure is out of the "line of site" of the water. Also hoping for a record quick build, but that is another story... I digress..

Any ideas on lamps? Like I said, I'm thinking orange or brown. This was a pair of brown lamps I'm considering, but it might be too boring.

I think orange might be better since it would throw in a little more color, but I haven't found the right match yet. Anyone have any suggestions?

I would love those lamps in orange.

Just a thought, since the table will have to be on the small side to fit the space, you might want to consider some wall mounted swing arm lamps. That way there would be room on the table for a clock, a book, water glass, etc. I'm a nightstand clutter bug. LOL

I'm happy my idea might help you find the right size table so you can have two of them.
Love the lamps. Very similar to a pair I have in stainless. I'm thinking brutuses is right with the swing arm lamps. You could really have fun with the lamp shades on those. If you do go that way you could get a pedistal table since you won't need a shelf underneath. Something like linked below.....

Becky, that table is precious, but around me it would always be knocked over. Little dainty tables like that seem to just jump out in front of me when I walk by them. LOL

Brutuses, I hadn't looked at swing arm lamps yet, but that is a really good idea. I'll let you know what I find after hunting today.

Becky, I really like that table also. Maybe, if I use the swing are lamps, I could do a 1/2 round table with a shelf below where I could stash the books for my guests...

I'm still considering hitting the antique stores this weekend, although finding two tables there is probably a lost cause. It would be very nice to get something in real wood though, instead of veneer...

    Thanks again guys! Jaymie

This might be an option. I could repaint it to whatever color I like if the white didn't work, AND I have to go measure, but this if fairly small (17 3/4" W x 13" D) and I could put books on the bottom shelf...

This one is even a bit slimmer (15") and would have two nice drawers for misc stuff and then the bottom shelf. These are classified as telephone tables... Do you like either of them for the space? Would you leave them white, or would they stick out like a sore thumb? I went with the iron bed in here because we have so much WOOD everywhere in our house, which I love, but I'm trying to break out of the box a bit...

I like both, but especially the one with 2 drawers. I would paint them - black, maybe green, maybe a color found in the pillows or artwork.

You need a table on each side, and I would prefer wall mounted lamps.

Ah Ha! I found the table in black, so I wouldn't have to repaint it!

I also found another one I like, but I'm pretty sure this is just because I'm being drawn back to my Mission tendencies!

    {{!gwi}}

Still searching for wall lamps. That is turning out to be a little more difficult for me.

I like the one with the drawers because it offers more storage. You may get lucky finding some antique tables. Usually it is tables that antique stores have an abundance of. Good luck. LOL

I think these would look nice with your bed and bedding.

lyban Those are nice. Sometimes I feel like I am in such a rut, because I would have (and probably did) skimmed over that fixture, but when you referred it, I realize how nice it is. Thank you.

I hung the pictures today and think I'm decided on the black telephone table. The roman shades also arrived. I'll take some pictures tomorrow after I have them hung.

Today, after looking, I was kinda leaning towards this hammered bronze fixture, but it obviously isn't a wall light and I'm just not sure. I'm going to give it a few days. Usually when I do, an answer eventually comes to me.

    {{!gwi}}

Thank you all for all your help!

I think the small telephone tables would work on either side nicely.

I would definitely suggest wall-mounted lighting of some kind to not crowd the tables or the visual space.

I thought this one might be fun centered over the bed.

The shade just seems perfect, and the dual lights underneath would be great for guest to use when reading in bed. However, lampsplus.com has a ton of wall-mounted, plug-in lighting. Be sure to check it out.

I am not crazy about the four canvases to hang in a line above the bed. They seem too similar to the pillows. I would rather see those hung, perhaps two over two, on another wall to bring the colors and design from the bedding to another part of the room.

I would also move the print pillow to the center of the three pillows.

Instantly, as a guest looking at this picture, I'm drawn to the window for the unique view, I will only be able to enjoy while visiting your home. So you won't appreciate me as your guest, moving your furniture so I can fall asleep and wake up gazing out upon your tranquil lakeside setting. Also, I love art to see while in bed, rather than behind me when in bed. Maybe that's an earthquake thing, don't want anything to hit me in bed. But it's something I always notice in hotels, a blank wall from bed with a great piece of art over the headboard????? I love walking into a room with the bed being a focal point and other focal points around the room, not everything on the one wall. So is there a way to place the bed for guest to enjoy the window view? And then decorate from there?
Love that you want different details from the rest of your home, all your wood cabinets are fabulous, but this is a wonderful surprise and perfect room for more options. Great insite from you!

les917, You are teasing me! Am I missing the link? I'd love to see the light you refer to.

I did hang the canvases last night, unfortunately, but they can be moved. They are just held up by two tiny nails (not in earthquake country bodica). I could move them to the opposite wall so they can be seen from bed easily. Would I need something else over the bed then? It is pretty high, so maybe not.

bodica, You mention wanting to look at the view... Are you suggesting rearranging the furniture in the room in some way? Do you have any suggestions? I'm open to them if you do. Here is the floor plan and current pictures. The roman shades came yesterday, so now the windows are dressed.

Thank you so much for both your input!

Is that a fireplace in the corner? I do love what you've done, all the colors, patterns and textures are beautiful together, and the wood doors are pleasing art, in my opinion. You are deffinately in the leading edge in today's decor! Here are some photo examples from a very new upscale fishing harbor hotel just opened March 2008. She used the montage art also and complimented with the lampshade color and fringe, which is repeated in the window treatment.

    Your room is perfectly fabulous!

bodica, You are WAY too kind! I'm actually blushing and a bit embarrassed. I'm really a decorating mess, which is why I spend so much time here, but thank you.

Thank you also for sharing the pictures from the hotel. What a beautiful room. It is so nice to see things like that the shameless steal ideas from!

Wouldn't it be nice if that was a fireplace in the corner? Sadly, it is an old dresser I bought at an antique store when baby #2 arrived which has since migrated to this room since I bunked the boys up in the new house.

I've been searching and searching and think I might have finally found a wall lamp which is appealing to me. What do you think? Like it? No go?

And here is what they might look like mounted.

Oh gosh is it mental telepathy? Those were the exact lamps I was imagining in your space when I recommended wall lamps. I think they would look perfect with your mission style decor.

Jaymielo, where did you get the artwork? I love it!!

    Also, I like the lamps.

brutuses, How funny! I'm so glad you approve and like. The only think killing me is the shipping. They are from PB and they change an unGodly amount to ship. I'm on the prowl form a coupon code. It kills me to pay outlandish shipping!

gumbosoup, Thank you! I found the art work at Overstock. I'm a junkie. I was a little worried about the color since I bought almost everything in this rooms online from different vendors, but so far, I'm been very lucky that all the colors "agree" with each other. Here is a link to the art.

Wow, I sure have missed alot!

Brutuses, I have a small table similar to the one I posted and it's amazingly sturdy. Though the "legs" on mine are lower to the floor.

Jaymie, I love the little black tables and your doors are gorgeous! I really like your idea of a half round table. Since you have few soft edges in your room now I think choosing at least rounded corners for your tables would be very nice. Maybe some small console tables would work.

    ~Becky

Love the lamps and their 'out of the way' function, leaving the tabletops free. The black looks fabulous too.
Wonderful chest! May I tilt the mirror to see the lake from in bed? Maybe storage/suitcase/seats on each side of the chest, cushioned with fabrics picking up the art and pillow colors?

You know you can find those lamps a lot cheaper at other lamp stores on line. I know I've seen them time and time again. That is if you want to take the time to look for them.

bodica, You MAY tilt the mirror to see the lake from bed. :) I was thinking about centering the dresser and just have it pushed out of the way for now. Your idea for storage/suitcase/seats on either side is interesting and might balance the room. Thank you!

brutuses, I'm ALL about finding the lamps for less money and have the time to look. I may need to get creative in my search parameters, but your insistence that they are out there for less at another site is encouraging. I'll continue to search. Thank you!

I also love those two lamps so much from pottery barn! They are perfect but what a shame the shipping is so much.

OMG - what a goofball I am. I have been working so many hours and am so short on sleep - sorry I didn't include the link for the lamp. It would center over the bed, so the art would move. It is a bit on the modern side, but I think might be very cool in your space:

    giclee retro lamp

You can see that they have the shade for sale alone, as well as other styles of the lamp with the shade at the bottom of the page. I like how it picks up your colors, including the taupe/beige squares that echo your bedding and window treatments.

Do look at their selection of lamps. Many have free shipping, and they have tons of plug-in wall lamps that don't have to be hardwired to work.

Seeing your floor plan, I would be inclined to flip the bed to the opposite wall, and let the dresser be on the wall by the closets. Seems like you could put the dresser a bit to the left on that wall, and still fit in a nice chair in the corner near the window.

Thanks for moving the pillow! LOL

Thanks les, I'd love to know what the bed's like on the oposite wall, so I can see the lake, lol. Also, it is so inviting to reach the guest room door and see a beautiful bed drawing you in. Suitcases and such will be less displayed behind the door wall. Maybe more options for the nitestands too. Where does that door to the left go?

Hi guys, I never thought of the opposite wall for some reason, but you may have a point. As soon as I have a bit of energy, I will try to flip it in the room and see if it works. I think I would also like that better because I'm not really fond of the look of the side of the dresser as you come down the hall. In our master, I can look right out of bed at the lake, so why wouldn't my guests like the same thing? ;-)

The door to the left of the bed (where it presently is) goes to unfinished storage, so it has no real utility.

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions! Jaymie

ok... I know I haven't been here much but why is everyone's name blue in post?

A new site feature not available on other parts of gw or you guys just love htmhell? lol

blue_velvet_elvis, That is just me. I always like to make people's name stand out when I'm addressing them so they see it easily. You get RED! ;-)

Oh, so I was misunderstanding, the door opposite the window is the hall and the door with the bed is storage?

Yep. The door to the left of the bed is storage and the door on the other side (at the bottom left) is the hallway. I guess I never thought of the bed on that wall because I thought it might be odd to walk into the side of the bed. I was just up there "pacing" around the room, and there would probably be plenty of space.... I do like to see the bed "draw" you in though.

    Les,
I love that retro lamp you posted. I am trying to find a room in my house to put it. It is gorgeous.
