Chest of drawers or dresser in living room?

I've just ordered a new sofa and chairs for the living room and am starting the re-decorating process. We currently have a sofa table up against one wall in the living room because our room really doesn't allow for the sofa to be out where the sofa table can go behind it. It's really somewhat of a wasted piece of furniture because it doesn't provide any storage and merely serves to fill a wall. I have an opportunity to sell it and am thinking of replacing it with a dresser or chest which would provide much needed storage in the room. I would love to get your opinions on having a dresser or chest in the living room. Do you find it useful? Better yet, can you show me pictures?

I had the drawer chest currently in our MBR (link below) in the foyer of our last home for years. I currently have a large wood chest (two doors, no drawers) that holds my stash of light bulbs and magazines in the great room. There is also a chest in the breakfast room (yellow crackled paint). All can be seen in the link below. I also have a chest in the laundry room. The one in the link was DD2s and she recently took, but I replaced it with one I had in a hallway downstairs. In the previous house, it was in the breakfast room years (held wrapping supplies) then moved to the landing/top of stairs.

I'll check Photobucket to see if I have a picture of the chest in the foyer.

That is a wonderful idea -- and extra storage is ALWAYS a good idea around any house!! :)

Please post a photo when you get the new chest of drawers!

Like chijim, I used a nightstand in the family room at my old house.

I just saw the most gorgeous dresser on CL that would be amazing as a buffet or sidetable. It could easily go in a LR.

I used to have an antique dresser as a TV stand years ago, it was awesome, as the drawers could hold remotes, kids video games, etc. As shown in the photos, much of that furniture looks beautiful enough to use in the living areas.

I'd go for it. I have a buffet in my foyer and I've seen tall chests used in LRs before. Provides extra storage and I think it looks nice to see something not as typical in the room.

Cheryl, I don't have any pictures because I'm still looking for my chest for the living room but I think it's a fabulous idea, especially when you can find one with classic lines.

I have two dressers in my living room right now. Needed something to hold movies, cds, and video game junk and couldn't find anything that would hold it all and not break the bank. This isn't forever but looks fine and functions wonderfully. I love dressers used throughout the house, nothing better for storage issues.

We use 2 dressers on our wall in our living room for the tv on top and all the tv accessories in one and art supplies for the kids in the other. The storage comes in handy and each is a cool antique with its own personality.
Why use something with no function that takes up roughly the same footprint?

I bought this Empire piece from Craigslist last year about this time. It's in my LR, and comes in very handy for storage.

I love things to go where they ordinarily wouldn't go.

My3dogs I love your chest of drawers, I have one similiar in my bedroom, but I like your's better. Gawd, your so lucky to come across such good looking things on craigslist.

I have a chest of drawers in my dining/kitchen room but I wouldn't hestitate to put it in my living room if it called for it.

For some reason I can't get the picture off photobucket or I would post it, darn.

My mother had antique chests of every size and description in every room of her house.

I bought a couple for my last place--approx. 27" w x 18" d x 27" h, since the place was small and I needed the storage, and put one in the LR in place of an end table and one in the DR. In our new house, I now have one in the foyer and one in the LR.

I have a free craigslist dresser that I painted and repurposed as a buffet in the dining room. I too use bedroom nightstands as end tables in the living room.

I have a dresser in my kitchen, where it masquerades as a sideboard.

In the living room, I have an chiffarobe, because there is no hall closet or coat closet and I don't want to have to walk all the way back to the bedrooms to hang up my coat every time I come home. And the drawers add very useful storage.

Thanks so much for the pictures. I really love the look of your chests and have pretty much made up my mind to replace the sofa table with a chest. I wish I could find a beautiful antique like some of you have. I watch Craigslist all the time but since I'm really not in a big city area, there's not much in quality antiques out there.
