Do you do much hand washing? I never use a DW so my dishes are handwashed; sometimes I use a dishpan and I checked to make sure that even with a dishpan set down in the sink I still had ample room for rinsing on the side.

The different brands of fireclay or porcelain farm sinks have significantly different shapes, with some quite narrow (from front to back) at the bottom. You should check that out, as well as distance from side to side. Be sure to measure the size of the bottom surface as some have a wide sloping curve where the sides meet the bottom, making the flat central surface smaller than the open top.

Some also have offset drains (not centered), and one brand (Rohl) comes with an unpredictably offset drain, apparently a small portion of the drains are on the opposite side from the majority and the "flipped" ones appear randomly. (The good thing is that Rohl sinks can also be turned around from front to back as they finished on all four sides, so in most cases it doesn't matter, except for the placement of the logo.)

Changing from a double bowl to single (whether farmhouse style, or not) is something that most people really like. But a few people find they don't like it. If you have a chance to wash some dishes in a friend's single-bowl sink before making the decision that would be good. Personally I would never have anything except a large single bowl sink.
