crackle vs. non-crackle tiles - which is better? Votes please!

Question for you guys:

If you have two *almost* identical tiles (creamy white tiles in 3x6) and one was crackled and the other one not-crackled, which one would you use for your kitchen backsplash? (Note that the Bianco Romano granite is greyish and creamy, with reddish bits).

I know it is a personal preference, but I wonder if one is better than the other in terms of durability, upkeep, ability to withstand staining, etc.

Any thoughts?

I'd use crackle (because I did) and because the look is softer than a non crackle tile. I'm also a bit of a texture freak and I like the addition of that subtle texture in a kitchen that is otherwise somewhat hard (texturally) due to the smoothness of the finishes.

That said I have to give the other honest answer and my experience. You have to seal crackle tile prior to grouting!!! If your tile guy does not know this do it yourself or fire him. It's a big deal. And because the crackles do make it more porus, it should be sealed again once a year or so.

Now reality....My tile guy sealed prior to install but I haven't done so since (couple years now) and there are no stains :)

I really wanted crackled tile, but it was just enough off white that it wouldn't work, so I vote for crackle so that I can live vicariously through you!! Like Igloo said, it does require sealing, but the tile guy we talked to said it really wasn't anything that would prevent him from using it if it were going in his house.

I vote for the crackle also. And PLEASE let us know the tiles you are considering, I'm on the never ending quest for the perfect crackle tile.

Can you post pics of both tiles? I love Crackle tile, but there are some gorgeous non-crackle tiles, especially those that are handmade.

We have a crackle white tile, it is a mild bit of texture in my very calm kitchen. Do seal it before grouting.

Another vote for crackle. We used crackle subway in the kitchen and it gives just enough texture to reflect the light. And a belated thanks to igloochic about sealing before grouting---had to remind my installer. Another save, igloochic!

I vote for crackle. I love the finish with that subtle hint of depth and texture.

Non crackle! We have carrara marble counters, and I was all set to go with crackle tile until I got a sample. Didn't like it at all! I think a nice, handmade non-crackle tile provides a better contrast with stone countertops. Of course, different strokes...

Sea I stole that idea from someone here before my time :) But I'm glad the wisdom was passed on and used!

By the way, my crackle tile is handmade :) You can have the best of both worlds LOL

Igloo, you always get the best of both worlds....summers in Alaska, winters in Washington....gorgeous handmade CRACKLE tiles ;)

Thank you all for your feedback. I've been busy with out of town visitors and haven't had a chance to respond. It looks like the majority of you voted for crackle tiles! So, crackled it is!

Igloo, your tiles are to die for. They kinda remind me caramel...yummy! I will make sure to have the tiles sealed before and after grouting. Thanks for the advice.

Sue - the tile choices are crackle tiles by Sonoma Tile Makers and non-crackle tiles by Waterworks. Can't remember the name of the colors off hand, but they looked really similar.

lesmis - I will pick the crackle tiles so that you can vicariously live through me! Plus, the crackle tiles are cheaper, so it's a win-win situation!

pluckymama - I tried to take pix, but it was really hard to get the texture of the tiles to show. What a disappointment!

Thank you so much to the rest of you for your feedback! You're all wonderful!

I have a question regarding the sealing of the tile. What do you seal it with? How do you apply the sealant? Paintbrush? Soft cloth? Do you seal the grout too? When sealing the grout do you apply the sealant only to the grout or just wipe down the tile and the grout? I'd love to know! Thanks!
