Funny thing is, I used to keep my most often used cookbooks where I now have the coffee center shown in the other discussion, but now they're all together. I owe this idea to Trailrunner:

I put a bookcase in my hutch.

I had an area in the kitchen that had upper cabinets, but no lowers. It's about 16" deep, so too shallow for base cabinets.

So here is what I came up with:

This is made with two 34" high unfinished bookcases from The Woodland Mills, and a variety of other pieces of MDF and wood. The top is IKEA Numerar finished with Waterlox satin. The baskets are from The Basket Lady. (I designed the whole thing with those particular baskets in mind.)

The wine rack is just a shelf with strips of 1/4" x 1/4" wood glued every 2" to keep the bottles in place. It sits on brackets and is not attached, so if at some point we decide that we'd rather have a flat shelf there, it can just be flipped over.

Overall shot showing the relationship to the cabinets above:

This whole assembly cost less than $500. I'm still figuring out what looks best where but this is solving lots of problems and adding storage that I really needed.

We went a different direction. We have a lot going on in our kitchen visually with glass cabinets and open shelves for jarred goods that I decided it best to put the cookbooks behind closed doors. That way I can keep all my messing clippings and magazines there too. We have supplemental cookbook storage in a small bookcase in our dining area.

The cookbook and mixing bowl cabinets are only 13" deep---they butt up to 24 " base cabinets facing the eating area.

OMG what great ideas!! Zelmar you can't go wrong with a hidden set up for what can be messy magazines et all! Latimore love what you came up with! Looks very functional and pretty. Segbrown I love how you treated the corner next to your range. Makes a great place for a small appliance and love the open shelves! Marcy your hutch is beautiful! And Rhome I love the over the fridge book shelf, great use of space!

great ideas, i think for us we'll have room over the fridge wall, but since dh uses them all the time they will be too hard to reach daily.
years ago i saw in a magazine a clever idea---the lady had soffits over the fridge which she disliked, so she made a wallpaper of sorts of book ends and installed it around the soffits---looked like she had an extensive cookbook library up there!
i think i'll be able to make room in the dish pantry--which will have two ft side walls floor to ceiling--there they'll be close but not messy looking.
let's see what my kd says...

I have a small bookcase in a wedge shaped area of my island. Doesn't hold too many cookbooks, but is a good use of the space.

Latimore, your setup is almost exactly what we need on our other end of the kitchen. I just need to either incorporate our Hoosier cabinet or see if I can find another place in the house for it. Unfortunately, DH and I were talking yesterday, and we cannot really find another good place for it.

We have a hallway on one side of our kitchen, formed by one wall of our walk-in pantry. We moved the original pantry wall (at the drawing stage) to add enough space to line the hallway with ceiling to floor bookshelves. This is just steps away from the kitchen & family areas, perfect for lots of cookbooks, games, dvds, etc. I have magazine holders on one shelf where I keep all the instruction manuals for large & small appliances.

We put in a small bookshelf at the end of the sink run next to the back door. We wanted the counter space but it wasn't enough for another set of drawers and I didn't want a cabinet. We keep read-aloud books on that one.

For the cookbooks, I had the carpenters put beadboard paneling in the closet and replaced the ugly, haphazard shelving that was in there holding all manner of things. I left space underneath for a table (not yet painted) and chair for working on menus. I also keep all my teacher materials (we homeschool) in there, so I will be working on lesson plans there as well.

View from the kitchen; the closet is the door next to the hoosier.
