Area Rug/Furniture Sizing Help

We recently purchased a sectional and are now trying to decide the appropiate size for an area rug. The sectional is L-shaped measuring 106 x 106. Do we go with an 8 x 10 or a 9 x 12? Overall room measurement is 16'2" x 16"5".

Is there a general rule of thumb...front legs on the rug, back legs off? Furniture on or off the rug?

We recently had the same dilemma and chose to go with a 9x12 area rug so all the furniture is on the rug. I am very happy with our decision to go with the larger area rug. Hope that helps!

We've been wondering about this too. We have a 7 x 9 rug which might have the front legs of the sofa on it depending what sofa we choose. We have a 6 x 8 rug from another room that could be swapped and keep the legs off.

Does the type of rug make a difference? Ours is hand knotted and I worry that front legs on might damage the edge over time.
