Those with inset shaker cabinets-please help

Hi- I am new to this forum & need some cabinet help. I have an old house with a small kitchen & want to do custom inset uppers. For inset/shaker style, if the total cabinet width is 23-24 inches wide, is this enough room to do a double door cabinet or will the center panel be too thin? Is there a standard range of widths for inset uppers when you do single door versus double door? I believe the shaker rail is usually 2 1/4 inches wide, but we can go more narrow if needed. How much room is allowed on each side of door for inset? Is 3/4 standard? The height of the cabinets will be 42 inches. If anyone has this width cab & pictures to send that would be really helpful.

The center cabinet is 24" wide and the other two are 36" wide. They are inset, beaded edge, modified shaker (not a squared off edge like shaker).

Here's one of my inspiration pics. I cant be sure on the dimensions, but its definitely narrow. Actually my favorite thing about this kitchen is the tall very narrow doors! Will your panels be flat? If you're doing beadboard then it might look funny if it was very narrow.

Thank you Judydel & also joyjoyjoy for your pics. Judydel, how high are your cabinets? We are planning on 42 inch.
The railings in joyjoyjoy's pic look very narrow, I would bet they are smaller than the typical 2 1/4 rail of the shaker. I will be doing a classic shaker, no beadboard. The cabinets would flank each side of my window over my sink & that's all the cab's on that wall.
If anyone else with a smaller kitchen has any other pics that would be helpful. We have alot of height (ceilings 9 1/2 feet), but not a lot of wall space.

They are 40" tall. We brought them down lower than normal so I can reach three of the four shelves without a stool. They extend down to 14" from the counter.

Judydel---Thank you for your picture. Would you know the width of the your shaker railing? Is it 1 3/4 or 2 1/4 wide?

If anyone else has any pictures to post of 24-26 inch double door inset shaker cabinets, it would be really helpful. Ours will be on either side of our sink flanking a window above our sink & there are no other cabinets on that wall.

    Thanks,
    Lisa

I just posted this for someone looking for pics of the quartzite I have so the pic focuses on my counter tops, however, there are a couple of pics of my double door inset cabs that are 22 inches wide - yep 22. I stressed over them and between me, my family, my sister and my cabinet maker they began to be called 'my skinny cabinets'. The entire 4 weeks of the cabinet build I worried about them being too skinny. Five mins after they were installed I stopped worrying. Yes, I know they break the standard rule of 24 inches is the min. of a double cabinet doors for insets but (ssshhhh!!) it is not the only rule I broke. I love mine and wouldn't change them. Hope this helps

We have one 42" upper, the one above the toaster oven. It is 25" wide. All our rails are 2" except the one on the left side of the MW.

gb85---Thank you! May I ask how high are your cabs & how wide the shaker railing is on your 22 inch double door cabs? Is it 1 3/4 or 2 1/4? They look very nice & especially since you have more than one cab at that dimension. I can fit a 25 on the right side of my sink & a 26 on the left if I butt them up right against the window moulding. Ours will be higher than normal cabs though, 42 inches, which is why I was concerned about them being thin. I had heard a 24 double door full overlay is equal to a 27 inch double door inset cab & that is the standard.

jwsweenc--Thank you also for your photo & information, do you by chance have a photo taken straight on?

No problem - they are 33 inches high. My railing is 1 1/2 inches. Have your old cabinets already been removed? If so and you are in the process of your final order draw out the cabs (including the railings) on your wall. My GC drew out the outline of my cabs and that was very helpful. If you draw in the details you may be able 'to see' what it will look like before placing your final order. Good luck!

BTW, the pictures posted by joyjoyjoy look like they are 24 x either 51 or 54. I counted the subway tiles underneath and up the side. I got a little lost on the ones going up the side due to the glare. I really like them - I think they look elegant.

lblue, this is the best I can do, since the hood is so close. I had to get down to counter level and shoot upward, so it may be a little hard to get the visual you are wanting. The second picture is at an angle from as close in as I could get without getting the hood in and including the counter for perspective. Maybe one will be helpful.

The rails on our cabinets are 2.25".

oops - sorry the 1 1/2 is for the frame our rails are 2 1/4.

Okay now I'm confused. What do you mean by rails?

Thank you so much Jsweenc, Judydel, gb85, joyjoyjoy.
By railings, I meant the width of the shaker rail on the doors.

Jsweenc--what size are your doors? Is there 1 1/2 inches on either side allowed for the cabinet frame? You pic of your 25 x 42 cab would be the same dimension as what we are doing. The pics of narrow cabs all look good, so I feel better.

lblue, sorry I didn't check in at all yesterday, then tried to post a reply but it didn't go through.

Sorry, I am just now getting what you are asking! I was assuming that by rails you meant the vertical part of the frame that affects the overall width. The frame is 2" on either side. What you are calling the rail is 2.25" on either side. The panels on the doors are 7", for a total width of 11.5" on each door, and 25" for the entire cabinet including frame. (I only counted the left side, since on the drawings the right rail is considered part of the next cabinet.) Am I now understanding you correctly?

If you can get your frames down to 1.5", you will have more width for the panels.

FWIW, I like the way it looks. In fact, the next cabinet over, the tall one to the counter, has 10.5" doors and I like the way that one looks too. They don't look too skinny to my eye.
