Floral arrangement or rocket ship?

Is this fall floral arrangement too tall for my dining room table?

I bought the following arrangement at Michael's for half off. I thought it was perfect for the table, as I needed to find something tall and large enough, in relation to my chandelier. The colors are perfect for fall and the vase matches similar items in my house. Had I purchased the vase alone (without using a 40% off coupon,) would have cost what the arrangement did!

OK, I loved the look, until my husband came into the front entrance and proclaimed that the arrangement looked like a "space rocket" was getting ready to take off from the center of the table. LOL Once I tweaked it a little, he now says that he likes the arrangement.

Although the lighting isn't very good this morning, I have included several photos. Please tell me what you think? The arrangement cost $60, so if most of you think it is hideous, it will go back to the store.

BTW - My greatest critic (my oldest daughter) will be coming home for a visit tonight, so I'll also get her opinion tonight. :)

I think it's very pretty, and not rocket-looking at all! Whatever tweaking you did must have fixed that.

    Its a keeper!!!
You have a gorgous dinning room I just love all that trim work and the color...wow. Very nice and the arrangement completes the look.
    You did good kid.

I think it's stunning, as is the rest of your dining room! Love all of it!

I love it but your art work is messing up the whole room. You need to send it to me so I can get rid of it for you. :)

I think it looks beautiful, as does the rest of the room! Very nice!

I love it too! Looks perfect to me.

It's perfect! (Tell DH he can "blast off!" ;-D)

Ignore DH. He's just messing with you. When DH tries to discuss a decorating issue and says "I don't know, I'm just guessing." My response is, "I know that's why I'm ignoring you." LOL

Pretty! How bout taking it out of the current vase, cutting down the foam and putting it in something lower if you prefer that look?

    Men!!!

I think its wonderful! Really a wonderful bit of color for the whole room!

Well, I don't think it looks like a rocket ship, but I do think it would look better if there was more space between the flowers and the chandelier...

Right now it looks like the flowers and the chandelier are connected, and you can't really "see" them separately. Maybe you could trim off the top little sprout, there...? Or if they are wire, you could bend them down a bit?

I confess, when I first saw your thread, I read it as "floral arrangement for a rocket ship" and I thought, now THERE'S a challenge... Lol....

It is a beautiful arrangement and the colours go perfectly with the rest of your room (which is "delicious" BTW:), but I have to agree with mclarke - it is little too tall for your table. I think a shorter vase will help a lot in this case. If you just trim off the top, the whole arrangement may look unbalanced. Although, even if you leave it like this, it will still be beautiful! :)

I was thinking along the lines of MClarke-- I think the style and colors are great, I would just like a few of the flowers to be a little lower from the chandelier--

if those beigy pom-pom-looking flowers could be down just a couple of inches, it would feel just right.

There's no need for the arrangement to "blast off" from your home though. It's all very warm and inviting! :-)

It is a beautiful arrangement. That being said and this is just me - the only problem is that those sitting at the heads of the table will have trouble seeing eachother. If your truly gracious diningroom is more decorative than utilitarian, it's not an issue.

Oh who cares about the flowers! I want to know what color that ceiling is! (Pretty please? It's gorgeous).

And I also would like to see some separation between church and state...umm I mean the arrangement and the chandelier. Perhaps a lower urn?

Everyone needs a chamber pot or a footbath size container for table arrangements. If you had a chamber pot, footbath, shorter and wider, cut down the foam, bingo.

In the view that has the painting in the background: the flowers are so close to the chandelier and the painting behind it ..they all compete with each other. Way too much 'busyness', in my eye. If you only could put the flowers in a shorter vase to allow some space between the light and the flowers, I think that would make all the difference in the world. Everything is gorgeous, shorter vase, I think, would be perfect. Love the ceiling, too!

I thought you wanted to know if your centerpiece should be a floral arrangement or a model rocketship! I like the arrangement but think it is a bit too tall even if guests aren't present. Just the tallest flowers need to be lowered a bit IMO.

I think it looks beautiful in there. Love the container. Your entire room is lovely!

Ha ha! I love how the first several people loved it and then as soon as one person spoke honestly, the rest "came out of the wood work." LOL

OK, I can trim and rearrange the top embellishments. That's what's been bothering me. Before I tweaked the arrangement, all the flowers were set up high and were too close together....hence the rocket ship look.

EEEK!!! I don't want to redo the entire arrangement!
I bought it because of the container and the fact that it was already made up, so destroying the entire thing and getting a new container is out-of-the-question. I thinking trimming the arrangement and perhaps even taking out the grassy things -on the side, will help and will also clear a path between arrangement and chandelier.

As far as the view across the table, seeing that person at the other end won't be a problem. It's just my husband (the astronaut.) I get to see him all the time! Besides, we may just remove the whole thing for Thanksgiving and put some candles out.

Thank you for the compliments on the house (I will never give up that painting) and for the suggestions and encouragement on the arrangement.

Almost forgot! The paint is BM Wethersfield Moss.

Uh, where is the rocket ship? I'm so disappointed, I was so hoping to see a flower rocket ship and instead all I see is a beautiful floral arrangement.

I do think it's too high to be used while dining, but for decoration it's gorgeous.

All I see is blank white space at the end of the post! Maybe the rocket ship took off?

The "critic" my daughter came home a while ago and said that she likes the arrangement. When I asked if it were too tall, she said that it wouldn't hurt to reduce the height a bit. She has a very good eye and the arrangement really does look better in person than the photos show.

    Thanks all!

The painting is so realistic I thought it was a mirror - unbelieveably beautiful room.

I must confess I thought you were thinking of accessorizing a man's bedside table and he wanted a rocket and you wanted a floral arrangement. (I am thinking of accessorizing DH's bedside table so that is where I was coming from)

Lovely, but a tad too tall. If the white poms were lowered it might just work perfectly. The colors are wonderful for the room however.

Beautiful chandelier, beautiful vase arrangement, beautiful runner arrangement, but I might be tempted to take some of the flowers off the runner and see how that looks, as it seems to be competing a bit with the vase arrangement. But a lovely room nevertheless!

I see mcClarke has mentioned it. Looks beautiful, just a bit too tall. I'd re-arrange the top light-colored round pieces. Looks very pretty in there and those cherry blinds are perfect! Hard to imagine white.

    Thanks once again!

The "flowers" on the runner is actually a leaf garland. My daughter also said that I should remove it. LOL It was left over from my pumpkin topiaries, which she isn't too fond of.

I have a busy day coming up, so I will not get to the arrangement until after church tomorrow. I'll post a picture when I re-do.

newhomebuilder: "...The "flowers" on the runner is actually a leaf garland..."

When I post after midnight I begin to see things that aren't really there!

I think it looks lovely. I have a tall arrangement as well and ended up raising my chandelier up 3 3/4" inches rather than cut down the arrangement. LOL...I also have the same red flowers in my arrangement.
    Love your dining room..

Rules of short thumbs: NHB, I think I have read in some of my design books from the continuing education courses I took that arrangements should be short enough that the shortest "diner person" can see over it to talk to his fellow "eater" across the table.

NHB, just wanted to say that your dining room is beautiful though I'm not surprised after seeing the other pics of your lovely home. I would agree with what has been said in that you need to lower the top pieces of the arrangement for more separation between the chandelier and the arrangement. I would also remove some of the grassy things on the side and the garland on your table runner. It's competing too much with the arrangement, which was a great find!

    Your room is lovely!

I think the arrangement is nice, but too tall for the chandelier. In particular, the white floral pieces clumped at the top look like they were added as an afterthought, as they are no where else in the arrangement, and are so light compared to everything else in the arrangement. I would pull out those pieces, and perhaps add in a few tall pieces of curly willow or other airy branch pieces.

I would also get rid of the leaf garland while you are using the arrangement. I would just use the runner. Then, when you are actually using the table for dining, I would put the leaf garland back, and do a platter or low cake pedestal in the center with a cluster of pillar candles of various heights, with some small gourds, fall leaves, etc around them on the pedestal.

    Hello!

I am back after a busy week. Sorry I have not posted earlier with the results of my "renovated" arrangement.

First of all, I am keeping the garland because ... I like it! :) It really doesn't look as bad as it does in photos and without it, the runner looks stark. I suppose I could put down my burgundy runner (I use it at Christmas,) however it will all be coming off the table in two weeks, anyway.

Secondly, I will be removing the arrangement when we eat, and Les, I love your idea for the cake plate, candles and gourds. That will be perfect!

I did take out the grass, then realized that they were needed for fill-in, so I placed them up higher in the floral stems to have a more natural look. After looking at the new photos, I realize that all the pom poms are facing the front, so I will move one to the back. The twigs are not showing up as well with the flash.

OK, here is the new and improved arrangement. Better?

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!

    Much better. Nicely done.

Lovely room, beautiful painting, perfect paint color. The arrangement looks very nice to me, although the extra garland isn't necessary for an already beautiful room.

It doesn't look rocket-y at all. Your husband has a very good imagination!! : D Give him a pat on the head. LOL

OK, y'all convinced me...I took the garland off and it is outside around the pumpkin topiary base.

I am going to use the arrangement as a centerpiece for a bereavement meal I will be decorating for at church tomorrow. I have some faux mums that are similar in color and will place one at each dining table and the center piece will go on the food table.
