cherry color cabinets, acacia floor, fun granite?

I have been lurking for a couple of weeks and finally registered. My earlier attempt at a post failed on Monday :D

We bought a house a few months back and unfortunately for me, I found this forum a bit too late. A lot of stuff has already been done :(

I am going for cherry colored cabinets. I had a vision of a rather "plain" hardwood floor with a fun (bright color, big flowing pattern) granite on the island. (I will try to post a pic soon!) The rest of the countertops would be subdued and so would the backsplash... Basically, the island top would be the star.

The kitchen is an L with a 7.5 X 4.5 island (one corner is curved). Opens to living area. Please bear with me as I don't have pics online yet!

The twist in the tale is that I have fallen in love with natural acacia. The patterns in that wood were too hard to resist :) Given that it is a bolder pattern, should I now go for a saner granite option? Something that co-ordinates with the cherry cabs and subway backsplash?

A couple of other questions about space margins:

- There is a door to the patio. How much distance should I leave between the door frame - end and beginning of the cabinets? I don't want to waste space but at the same time it should not look crowded.

- There is a 4' window above the sink. Again, how much space between window frame and cabinets?

- Would a 3" space on either side of the chimney hood be enough? I have a 30" gas cooktop and 30" hood.

I'm intrigued and would love to see the options. Pics please!

You can do windows right to counter height. A hood, should in theory, be 3" bigger on each side then the range/stove. So... a 30" range should have a 36" hood.

Does your floor look something like this:

Yes! That is what it will look like. Actually maybe not as consistent a coloring if I go for "natural" Acacia. The golden looks more like this. Natural had a few planks with blonder highlights. there are a few pics of atural acacia on this page:
    http://www.builddirect.com/Hardwood-Flooring/Hardwood-Floors-Photo-Gallery/Mazama-Handscraped-Tropical-Collection-Photos_735.aspx
I am not buying from these guys, just searched for pics

The cabinet color is like the pic at:
    http://www.armstrong.com/rescabam/na/cabinets/en/us/product_detail.asp?styleId=15&finishId=37

I haven't picked out the rest of the stuff. Even the floor, I just liked it, hasn't been ordered. Have all these questions before I can proceed :)

I mis-spoke earlier. The range and hood are both 36". I was wondering about the spacing between the hood and nearest wall cabinets.

I would not go with the busy granite. We are currently redoing our kitchen and liked the acacia flooring very much but also wanted a granite with a lot of movement and did not feel we could do both so we went with a solid stained hardwood floor. I think the variation in your floor and a busy granite would clash.

    Hi Hazel2011,

Before you decide on a granite I think it would be practical
to ask what you mean by busy. An exotic granite might
be perfect. Let me show you what I mean. I think there
are a few factors to consider...

Have you taken the Sweeby test?
    Style,
    theme,
    colors,
    shades,
    textures,
    lighting,
    movement,
places for the eyes to rest...
Stain color or hue of the floor and cherry cabs.

Meanwhile here are some images of combinations that
might work with an exotic or creative granite and the
movement of your acacia wood floors.

Here is a kitchen with Acacia floors, light cherry
cabs and a beautiful blue toned countertop
This looks fantastic to me. Is this what you might be
    going for? I like it.

Light golden oak cabs, acacia floors and a simple granite
I think a granite with excitement would be better.

Granite below is Rainforest with to me has lots of movement
but it looks fantastic. I think the combinations
of the wood floors, cabs and granite are perfect.
This is not too much to me. How about you?
What do you like or dislike? Think about your own space.

Below is another beautiful example of an exotic granite
with movement, rich wood cabs and wood foors.
This is cypress not Acacia but similar in tone and movement.

This granite is another with lots of movement but it
works. the Granite is Golden Noir from Stone Studio

    Golden Noir from Stone Studio

    Granite is Juparana

Copper Canyon from Houston Granite and Floors
Notice the tones and movement all look fantastic.

This is Hickory not Acacia but again notice what
works. Maybe you can use some of these ideas.

Thank you sooo much boxerpups! This is exactly what I need. I have taken the sweeby test but my preferences and budget are unfortunately not finding a common ground. Granite with movement was one of the main things I wanted and acacia ... well it stole my heart. Your pics have given me so much hope. I think I might just stick to my original choice of granite :(

I am so glad I was able to help.

What was your original choice of granite? I have rarely
seen a granite that is boring. They all have natural
beauty even the more uniform color patterns. I wonder
if what you already choose might just be fantastic.

I wish I knew about Sweeby 18mos ago. Maybe I will post in another forum to see about building a time machine;)
That Rainforest green marble looks amazing with those acacia floors.
Hazel2011, your plan sounds like a good one. I have no idea about measurments until we see pics. I have about 3in on either side of my window above sink and 4in to counter from bottom, just for reference.Love the idea of showcasing your island stone.

Well.. the original one that I fell in love with was a granite that looked somewhat like this marble :)

We hadn't decided on one, my hubby and I went to check out some slabs and realized that the ones that we were really liking (3 or 4) had these strong flowing patterns with some bright veins in them. This was before we saw any cabinets or floors.

Boxerpup - This is twice now you have convinced me with your pic (other was on my post asking for help on full granite backsplash). I think now the acacia would have looked good with our cabinets (alder/cherry) and granite (sienna bourdeaux) although we are happy with flooring we picked.

I change my vote and say go for it!!!

I wonder if color makes the difference? I am not a blue person but the first pic with the blue granite looks great. It may not be as much the movement per se, but to make sure that the granite and floors do not look like an almost-but- not quite match. So the granite should not be all in the same tones of brown-neutrals as the acacia ( plus the cabs). So a striking blue or green could look really good.

I have an Amendoim floor (similar in grain pattern to acacia, which I also love) with a large Lapidus island. The perimeter counters are Silestone Amazon Gray which is much more mellow. Cabs are medium Alder. I thought the floors were going to be the show stopper, but the island is most definitely the focal point. I think you will be happy to go with the granite island you love and will compliment your floors, not compete.

    Sskit,
You are sweet to respond to me. I am not trying to
convince anyone. Please know I am one of these visual
people that start thinking.... my mind is like a
detective, call me Miss Marple with questions...

    Can it be done?
Can you have this with that?
Will it work or look ugly?
    Has someone done this before?
    What would it look like?

I start a search in my bank of images or even on the web
to see has someone mixed Cherry with Marble. Mixed
brass with stainless, used black slate with crystal...
Whatever the combination odd, unique, classic or new
I want to see if it can be done. If it has been done and
    looks pleasing.

    And trust me, Sskit,
there are a few images of UGLY out there. Your original
vote is not without concern. (smiles)
I think that the different patterns can be done but it
must look comfortable to the eye. There are so many 1000s
of little factors from lighting, to proportion, space,
tone, style, color, ....and yes even what the eye of the
    beholder wants in their space.

    Frankie-in-zone7,
has a beautiful point about the blue in pic 1.
The blue counter is a complimentary shade to the the
orange tones of the wood floor. The more purple blue
backsplash or glass insert is a complimentary to the
yellows in the cabinets. Together this is gentle and
pleasing to the eye. Despite the movement. And it also
has the space and lighting to be able to do such a
    creative combination.

The second picture, I am not a fan. But I wanted the OP
to see the combination can be done and perhaps much better
by Hazel if she chooses to go that route.

The other picutures are all lovely. Combinations of an
exotic counter and a rich wood textural floor can be done.
Does everyone love it, of course not, but if Hazel loves
it she can make her space fantastic and GW can help her
    with ideas.

A small update. Hubby and I again went to a granite place yeasterday. Well... we are absolutely in love with rainforest green :D

Now, it does have a lot of movement, and it is marble (actually serpentinite) but we are considering putting it on the island with a black (or something close to it) granite on the counter tops.

We figure that it will be easier to change the island top if we end up hating the RFG, or if the marble does not hold up well to our lifestyle.

There are some nice accent pieces available with some of the rainforest colors that we could put in here and there on the backsplash in between regular subway tile or just keep it all subway tile. Backsplash decision will wait for later.. Still contemplating!
