I dont know what other colors you have in the house but I would try green.

Could you pick up a color from the print of Washington at Valley Forge over your fireplace? Or maybe a green since that corner of the rug in the first picture seems to have green in it and that could tie the areas together.

Are you going to paint the walls when you make the mantel white? That could influence what you choose for draperies.

You have a comfy, cozy looking room and I like your armoire a lot.

If you are painting the mantle white, I am assuming that you are going to paint the walls a nice color also.

What color do you envision for this room? Right now your furnishings are pretty neutral with touches of warm deep colors. What is your overall plan for the room?

I should mention - we will paint the room in Botany Beige, but that's only about a half shade darker than it currently is. I think the fireplace bump out will be painted a darker color (from same strip of the botany beige ) just for impact. I didn't even think about taking the color from the artwork. See, you guys are great!

Hmm. I like the wood mantel, myself. It seems to go good with your furniture. I might look at a warmer paint color on the walls before drapery, course that is not too thanksgiving friendly;)

Double hmm, I'm with you jmama, in liking the wood surround on the fireplace. It blends well with the furniture and provides good contrast to the walls. IMHO, if the walls were painted a stronger color it would help with all the neutral upholstered pieces. Drapery color would depend on depth of wall color selected.

Count me as another who likes the fireplace as is. I'm not getting a black granite/white mantel vibe from the rest of the furnishings and art work.

earth tones...some warm hues to bring a sense of coziness from the furniture and art :)
