I have a two-sided sign that hangs from our bedroom door.

One side says Rifare la camera (make up room) and the other says Non disturbare (do not disturb).

Like our cat listens.

Itsawrap-you crack me up. Now this is not about decorating...but once I came back from vacation and everytime I used the bathroom at work (small office--10 people) I folded the toilet paper into a point, just like on the cruise ship or hotel...nobody ever said anything...I told one friend once and she started laughing saying she wondered who was doing that.

I've always wanted a lot of fireplaces. When we had this place built, we had four put in: living room, MBR, family room and front portal (porch). The bad thing is that I've found that I HATE empty, dark fireplaces, but keeping all those going constantly is a huge waste of wood, energy and my sanity. About ten years ago in an interior design shop down in town, I saw a large glass vase/bowl in a fireplace. It was filled with tiny white Christmas tree lights and it looked so pretty and welcoming and cozy! Since then, I've had something similar in each of my fireplaces so that they always look cozy and warm instead of dark and bleak (my words). I've gotten many comments over the years~ most positive but many downright aghast at the lights in there. I'm sure many think I'm weird but I, frankly, could care less. Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall, if there's not a fire going in my fireplaces in the evenings, dark mornings and gray afternoons, my cozy little lights are glowing in there instead . . . except, of course, when we're gone or in bed sleeping.

Lynn, I did the same thing in my mom's fireplace 10 years ago when she first moved in. I put 3 real logs on the grate and placed a string of white lights through them. All she had to do was flip a wall switch and voila! She turned them on almost every night.

We just bought a house with it's contents including several cases of toilet paper with the houses names on stickers on each roll LOL The OP's dream home purchase heh heh

I snuck a chicken into every room in our home. None obvious...well aside from the backsplash in the kitchen, but somehow it became a challenge to have one everywhere. In DS bathroom there's one drinking gin on the wallpaper. In the hallway there are chickens on the beer bottles the cats are drinking out of (we have a cats playing poker featuring our kitties). In the dining room it's in the elegant chandelier (ok quirky elegant) there's a bronze one in the library and a venetian glass one in our bedroom. In DS safari room there's one sleeping with the monkey's. I don't like chickens that much, but well like your toilet paper gimic...it sort of stuck LOL

Lynn, I guess I've mentioned more than once how much I love your home (g). I have a large black iron candelabra, with 5 large candles, in my fireplace during off-season. I like the idea of a string of lights too (in a bowl or wrapped around real logs). Are they battery operated? Wait, I think I see the white cord. Yes?

beekeeperswife - I like your sense of humor. I would definitely find that funny at work.

Lynn - love your lights, very nice touch instead of looking at an empty and cold fireplace.

igloochic - first of all, congrats on that spectacular property you just bought! Did I hear you have CASES of toilet paper rolls with stickers????? You mean the points are already folded and the stickers are already on???? Where can I buy them like that? LOL

Will you put a chicken in every room of the new place? That would be quite a flock in that house.

I have an odd quirk. Have lived and traveled overseas extensively and always find beautiful things while traveling. I have this hang up about not having anything from a country that neither my husband or I have visited. I had always admired African artifacts and was so excited to FINALLY visit Ethiopia so I could get something wonderful.

The only exception is if it's a gift. I've always wanted to go to Prague. Haven't made it yet. A friend gave me a beautiful little ink drawing of Prague once. That's out, and I'm so glad it is. Same with a piece of Bulgarian pottery that another friend brought back for us. But I'd never ever buy/have these out otherwise. On the other hand, I have no problem buying Chinese antiques in Georgetown, because I visited China 15 years ago.

lynninnewmexico - Please show us a close-up of what you have done. Does your fireplace have an electrical outlet? I think mine does, but would have to rummage through the fake ash to see.

Since my fireplace is unusable, I have been keeping candles in mine and only light it when we have company. I would love to use the lights!

I have the glass blocks with white lights for Christmas decorating on my porch, but saw an idea in Southern Living where they had filled different sized glass cylinders with tiny white lights. I liked that look and think it would work in the fireplace.

Natal - Wrapping or stringing lights along the logs is also a great idea! Do you use the green strings, white strings, or is there a brown string of lights?

OK, my decorating "quirk" is to make sure all the pictures/paintings on the wall are straight. I am always checking.

itsawrap and beekeeperswife - I also fold the toilet paper when we are having company. The funny thing is that I don't like to use that part of the TP when I see it somewhere else. Means that someones hands have been on it already. YIKES!

I don't have any decorating quirks - at least none that I'm aware of. In this house, if someone (besides me) actually *replaces* the TP roll when it's empty, that's a big thing!

My mom's fireplace was red brick, so I used a string of lights with a brown cord. She had a wall outlet on the lower left side of the fireplace and kept a wicker basket on the hearth to help hide the cord.

I guess I have so many quirks that I cannot even recognize one anymore! LOL

I think all the ideas mentioned above are either just nice decorating ideas, a bit OCD, or whimsical. Is whimsy the same as quirky? If so, that's my style and for me is "normal". Whatever *that* is.

I also can never use that folded part of the TT that someone else has touched so consider it a waste of paper to do it.

Probably my biggest quirk is not allowing myself to arrange things symmetrically. I knew early on in my life I had perfectionistic tendencies so have always called myself a reformed perfectionist and deliberately accept less than perfect in many areas of my life. One has to live in the real world and it's far from perfect.

My quirk, like a lot of peoples, is no electronics showing. And this ties in with Lynn's fireplace lights. We had a brass electric log insert with a blower in our large corner fireplace in the family room. I hated it, it was loud and dried out my sinuses. So I pulled it out and put my TV in there. DH built a little shelf, so the disc player fits. There was an outlet in there and a cable hook up next to it that we pulled back to it. I put black sheers on it, that I could close. The best part I got a fire video and when the sheers are closed it looks and sounds like a real fire. Two problems solved: TV hid & fireplace filled and I didn't loose the valuable display space on top. I realize some might think this wierd but like Lynn says I could care less and works for us.

Re: lights in the fireplace -- I bought 3-light candelabras (the kind people usually put in their windows at Xmas) that have a 'flicker' setting. I use them every night in the fireplace, and the 'flicker' really makes it feel like there's a fire going. Goofy, I know -- but I like it!

I like all the little 'quirks' everyone has posted, but they seem to add a little whimsy to a home.

I guess this would be considered a quirk~I can't seem to hang pictures on a wall without a table, chair, or something underneath. I think it was Christopher Lowell(I miss his shows!!)who said things on a wall should be 'anchored' by something underneath them. It just doesn't look right to me now if there isn't. ;o)

Itsawrap LOL yes the rolls are all points folded and with each roll apparently there are extra stickers in case a guest does not use it all. Where to get this nervana of TP??? I guess you just have to buy a house with tp included heh heh

And I believe this will be a chicken free zone :) But maybe umm pigs??? LOL
