We goofed! Will 6 inches be enough?

We live in a 140 year old home and our bedroom is not heated in the winter. We just finished painting the walls and woodwork this weekend and started putting the room back together. The flooring is wide pine, about 6+ inches wide. We decided that due to the lack of heat, we would be wise to purchase an area rug for the floor. Well....we found a sculptured carpet yesterday that has an "old world" feel to it and purchased it. We are having it bound on all 4 sides as an area rug and will pick it up next week.

The room is 13x13 so we ordered a 12x12, right? A foot around the edges.....guess there is a reason I am not a math teacher! Should have been an 11x11! We will only have 6 inches around the outside of the rug to the wall. We are thinking of leaving the order stand as is. Thinking that with bedroom furniture, it is usually pushed out to the walls and this way the furniture will "land" better on the rug vs. just barely being on the edge of the rug. Oh, the rug will not go into the area where the dresser is between the 2 closets.

What do you think? Call and see if we can change it? Or leave well enough alone?

Please ignore the lack of accessories or coordinated bedding. Haven't gotten that far yet.

I would leave it. I don't see that much benefit in having more space around the rug, when you have furniture that will cover a lot of the edges anyway. Plus, with no heat (YIKES!) the more covering on the floor the better, imo!

Love the furniture - just wondering if you could move the lamp on the dresser to one side or the other, rather than it being smack dab in the middle of the piece.

Would love to see pix of the space when you have everything done. Stay warm!

Sounds good to me! More floor warmth and less sound -- the better!

Add a good duvet AND a heated mattress pad to your bed! LOL!

Did you measure all the way to the wall between the two closets? If so, I don't think it will fit. If you did not count that part, I think you will be fine. Your room looks really pretty. Love your furniture

Your room is lovely. I'm sure the rug will be just fine. Can't wait to see it.

Les...my DH brought the lamp in from the parlor and just "plunked" it there to see how it looked in the room!

Thanks for the vote of confidence everyone! Just hoping that it will look ok with only the 6 inch clearance around the outside.

Already have the electric blanket! This will be our 7th winter in this bedroom. I have actually gotten used to sleeping in a cool(?) room and now have trouble sleeping in a warm room! But believe me, when your feet hit the floor in the morning, you are moving fast!

I just can't believe that both DH and I measured 13x13 and said "yup, need 12x12....for a 1 foot edge around the outside"!

This room has been somewhat the "forgotten" room. We just moved stuff in when we bought the house and have lived with the room "as is" ever since. I decided this fall that it was time to do something with it. Needed to get the painting done yet this fall before it got to cold to paint in there! The PO had painted the woodwork and closets an ugly brown and the walls were sponge painted browns, tans, beige, etc.

Am waiting to get the carpet before I pick out the bedding. Not too sure about the color of the carpet as it is a little more tanish/goldish/ivory than I originally wanted (I was looking for an ivory) However we were lucky to find the one we purchased as it was a custom order and the customer changed her mind. We got it for 1/3 the original sq. foot price. Decided that I could make the color work for that kind of $$ savings. The style of carpet we were looking for is not "in" now, so no remnants were out there. Only custom order.

I kind of like the look of a "wood" border around the perimeter of a room, but if it can't be changed it's not a disaster. But perhaps they haven't started on your order yet, so a call to ask wouldn't hurt. It's a lot easier to make a carpet smaller than it is bigger. :)

Mary, what beautiful furniture you have! I agree with those that said keep it 12x12. Funny how our minds work when figuring something like this. Better this way than too small. I'm looking forward to seeing your finished room.

I will go ahead and disagree. I think if you don't leave enough of a boarder, it's going to look like you made a mistake and didn't order enough, or that you were too cheap to cover the entire floor. And...that' is one pretty room :)

Thank you everyone for your input. We called the carpet place, but they had already cut the carpet and sent it out to be bound. So will live with the 6 inch border unless it looks really horrible. Will post pictures next week after we pick it up and get it down in the room.
