my crazy idea for an upholstered headboard

i need to get an idea for how do-able this is before i lug the piece to the upholsteror's place. ready?

ok, i've got a backless loveseat which i love. it's plump and comfy but desperately needs complete reupholstery thanks to the smelly dogs who claimed it.

also,i have no place for it any longer, and would love a sofa style upholstered head board. could i strip it to the frame and rebuild it to become that? i can just see the arms embracing the sides of my bed as i lean up against the seat to read. in my fantasy, i have it set on it's side, so the bed just slides nicely into it. does that make any sense at all?

and as is, it's a little too narrow for my queen size mattress, but since i'm stripping it and restuffing it i can make it the size i need, right?

sorry i can't draw it out for you,, i'm just trying to get a feel for if it can be done at this point.

I can't believe this! I have been considering the same thing for my teen aged son. Haven't gotten past thinking to doing anything about it...not a do-it-yourself for me. Please post pics if you proceed. I'm anxious to see what it would look like.

I understand exactly what you're thinking of doing! I am sure that this can be done, but it might require a furniture-maker to arrange the frame correctly. If you are handy though, I don't see why you couldn't make it work. Could your upholsterer come over and share his opinion? Our guy both could and would do that (come over *and* rebuild the piece).

We are planning to do the same thing, only with a new sofa, because of my issues with arthritis and a bad back, to give me lots of support in bed. Our favorite local furniture dealer said that he'd be able to get us the upholstered frame only of any sofa we wanted. The only thing we'd need to do is get accurate measurements so that our queen mattress and box spring would slide in. Of course, it will look like an always open sleeper sofa, but with the right combo of upholstery and bed linens, that would be fine with me.

Good luck with your quest. I'll be interested in knowing what happens.

yay--i'm so glad you guys share my vision!! for me, it seems the key is to start with the backless loveseat--i think it will be so comfortable and good looking. i plan on slipcovering it so i can wash off the inevitable coffee spills and crumbs.
and i will definatley post pics as i progress!thanks!

I know what you mean too. I thought about doing this some time ago, but it would be a wing-back style sofa(old colonial style), or for a twin size, wing back chair. I think I first saw the idea on HGTV. I think it's an awesome idea, and don't see an upholster having a problem doing it. ;o)

How deep is your loveseat cushion, a headboard should be higher than that, imo....

it will definitely look like an open sofa sleeper, you'll have to always fold over your duvet/comforter and also tuck the sheets into the arms, not practical.

Visually, you'll have to think of how the sides are going to look, below the arm part; will the mattress part have a skirt that starts at that point, and the arm part of the headboard will have the same fabric skirt as the arms of the headboard?.

Candice Olsen has a similar piece in her collection. I love it.

Here is a link that might be useful: Candice bed

If it is going to look like the Candice Headboard in the link I am not 'lovin it. It looks too much like one of those pull out sleeper couches that convert to a bed for overnight guests. It makes the bed look like something temporary until you get your "real bed".
