Do I paint island/built-in china cabinet/desk same as cabinets?

About to buy house/remodel kitchen. We plan to paint walls SW blonde and trim with SW antique white. There is a built in china cabinet to the left of the regular wall cabinets/island and a small desk to the right. I plan to paint the cabinets a ??creme color with chocolate glaze(any ideas of an exact color?) and paint built in/island/desk a different color. The granite is juparana tier with ivory. What color would you go with?? Show me ideas too!! Will post pics! Thanks!

Dare to be different!! My builder questioned me when I told him I wanted to use 2 different colors on my cabinets, but once he saw them, he started 'talking them up' to other clients.

I would say my glaze is a Burnt Umber, not the Raw Umber which I *think* is the darker one~could be the other way around. Anyway, the color looks to be sort of an Auburn color, but slightly darker. I would consider the SW Blonde to be a neutral color, therefor just about any color you choose shouldn't be a problem. I'm thinking a beautiful French Blue. I have to go get my fan deck.

What color are *you* leaning toward? Will you glaze that area also, or just paint?

Thanks patty cakes! The SW blonde is a light goldish neutral color. I thought black would look nice or maybe something brownish. Would you do all areas the different color or just the large island?

I wouldn't use anything Brownish. When I see that done on some of the dec shows, it's like they're trying to make it look stained~you're better off using a solid/glazed different COLOR. My fan deck is missing~I think it's at my DD's house.

I would paint all the cabs/pantry/desk in the eggshell/glazed and the built-in china cabinet to be your stand-out feature. You only want ONE focal point.

Have you gone over to "Kitchens" and looked in the "gallery" section? There are tons of beautiful kitchens with great ideas. Go have a look......;o)

Your china hutch is a stand alone in your BR, so you can treat it independently. I couldn't see your desk, but I would paint it creme like your cabinets as desks don't tend to be pretty focal points(again, didn't see yours). What about pulling out a shade from your granite or the brick/stone on your peninsula.

I did two different finishes in my kitchen and painted my china cabinet. I have BM Barbados Sand, a real ivory/light beige. The photo washes out the color. Too dark for you if you want creme. The BM store had recommended Mink (nice dark chocolate color) for a great glaze color.

Thanks boysrus2! I agree the china cabinet is over by itself, so I think it will look ok with a darker paint. Also the only way to see the painted part of the island that will be from directly in the kitchen. From the GR you will see the brick(which is not going to be painted. I think the desk will be the same as the cabinets. I found a pic in kitchen forum(frenchkitty's finished kitchen). She used the SW blonde on walls, SW ivorie on cabinets(with choc glaze, SW iron ore w/gold glaze on island, and SW dover white for trim. I think it looks good, except I think I want trim not so white, maybe SW antique white! Our granite has alot of black in it. Her floor is brick--ours is wood. Do you all think this will look good??

I love frenchkitty's kitchen. I used her kitchen as one of my inspiration photos for my new kitchen, last year. I did not know what colors she used. (Thanks).

First, I totally agree that you should paint the desk the same as the cabinets. Second, any reason you are not going to paint the bricks on the island??? Do they match some other bricks in your home? You could paint them the same as the cabinets if you wanted to downplay them or leave them if you like them. Third, I used SW antique white as our trim color thoughout our home, plus all the kitchen cabinets. The painter did glaze the kitchen cabinets with a brown glaze mix and I just love them. They are a soft cream with the brown antiqued look. We used SW Ivoire for all the walls and now I want to repaint the kitchen walls a deeper tone of gold or caramel.

I am little confused. What color are you leaning toward for the china cabinet? I liked Patty Cakes idea of using a color and then perhaps glazing over it. I am not crzay about the idea of brown. Too safe and boring. I do love the French blues or perhaps a soft bluish green. If depends on what other colors you use in your kitchen and home. You actually could also do a bright shade of color with no glaze. It all depends on your taste. But not brown. Sorry.

Just want to add that after looking at your photos again, maybe black would work for the china cupboard. I think you mentioned it? It would balance the black appliances and pick up the black in the granite and maybe in the brick? Plus, is the railing black?

I also apologize for mentioning painting the brick on the island. Please do not take it the wrong way. I was just wondering how the colors in it would work with the soft yellows you were mentioning. Plus now I realize you said it was not going to be painted. Missed that last time. Ooops! I should not post anything after drinking coffee in the morning.

No offense taken! I'd love to see a pic of your kitchen! I had thought of painting it black with the gold glaze(like frenchkittys island), and distressing it. Not sure if you can tell but there are flowers etched into the glass doors--gotta go!! The bifold doors next to it is a wet bar. We are going to take the railing down, to open up the whole area, and build steps around the whole room going into the sunken den. We close Friday, so trying to finalize all this stuff, so much to think about....but I'm getting excited!

I love the idea of painting the china cupboard black with the gold glaze and I would paint the island too. As for the brick, while I like the natural look, have you ever thought of painting them more of a terra cotta shade? A darker brick color would look really nice with the black in the kitchen. What is your style, did I see something about french country? Black, gold and brick red is always a nice combination and would look great with the glazed cabinets.
