need fabric/rug color suggestions

Sorry, more of my living room. :)

The wooden chair in this photo is a stand-in until I find an upholstered chair. I found one at a consignment store yesterday that would work if they can fix the broken leg. The chair is very much like the black leather one, and it has a matching small ottoman. It will need to be reupholstered. So with the sky the limit, what would you recommend for upholstery? I think I've always wanted to have a comfy velour red chair (very much like oceanna's new couch ad chair). But should I go with something else? Green? Black? Brown? Print? Plain? Geometric? I'm not good with wide open choices like this!

And while you're thinking about it, I am rug shopping as well. Originally I was thinking something with a dark red background, but if the chair is red, will that be too much?

I also have window-coverings to consider down the line, but they will likely wind up being sheer or something else pretty simple. I tried mocking up a floral panel and it pushed the room way over into granny-land. ;)

And paint color can be changed later as well if needed.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I'd find the rug first before choosing new upholstery for the chair. It's usually easier that way. This will depend somewhat on the rug you find, but I wouldn't do another solid color on the chair, since your loveseat and other chair are solid. I'd do a print; even just a subtle stripe. I like the symmetry you've created with the radiator and chest (or whatever that is on the left), and the lamps. The only thing that is sort of jarring about the room is your wicker coffee table. It just doesn't quite belong. As for window treatments, maybe just woven wood blinds? Depends on your needs (privacy, etc).

Thanks sueb20. That makes sense. So what predominant rug color would you shoot for?

That thing to the left is still unknown, but may be a bookcase or a dresser when I find something. It's a tricky spot, due the column.

I was thinking woven wood shades too, but can't decide yet, so I'm putting the WT decision off for now.

Nobody likes my 1970s trunk? :) It find it comforting, for some inexplicable reason. It's greatest attribute is that I already had it, so it's free. Maybe someday it will get replaced, but at the moment it's that or nothing.

Bh, I love your trunk! Did you see the thread with the wicker trunk (well, pigeon basket) on big wheels/casters?

I like the idea of woven wood shades or a simple roman. Maybe linen with a coloured border to pick up a colour in the rug.

I think a predominately red rug would look nice in the room, but I'd probably do something with a creamy background and red/green design.

I agree you should do something with a design for the chair fabric. If you don't like an actual floral, I'd do something floral-like.

I love the woodwork in this room. I agree with Sue: first, find the rug. Then decide on wall color and upholstery. You will go batty trying to find a rug to match wall color and upholstery later. :)

What size, material, and style of rug are you looking for? Looking to spend a lot, a little?

Thanks organic. I don't have anything particular in mind for the rug, just something traditional and 100% wool. There is a runner in the front hall adjacent to this room that has the same colors as the red pillow on the loveseat (deep red, olive green and butterscotch). I like some of the Pottery Barn rugs, and that would be easiest. I don't have much time for real brick and mortar shopping. I'm thinking in the $750 range for an 8x10. I wouldn't be opposed to a natural fiber, but think it might be a bit too bland for the room.

Can you post a pic of the runner? When you say "traditional," do you mean oriental/persian designs? I'd stay away from the Pottery Barn rugs--they have a tendency to shed (because they're handtufted rather than handknotted) and there have been TONS of complaints that they stink. I think it was Tryin2Grow (the resident rug expert) who said she can't give them away! :)

Once I see a pic of the runner, I'll do a little digging for you.

Thanks organic. Here's the runner. The photo makes it look purple-ish, but it is not, it's just a very dark red.

When I say traditional, I just mean not modern. It needs to "go" with the old house. But it could be a floral, oriental, arts & crafts.

For reference, the Franklin is the Pottery Barn rug that I like.

Thanks! Here's a page of "Traditional" designs, from a reputable dealer. I thought I'd let you peruse rather than me trying to guess what you might like. :)

    Also, some "Persian All-Over" designs. . . .

Oh, and thanks budge1. I did not see that discussion.

I had to google it to confirm, but apparently this was a big influence on my decorating style:

Also, if memory serves, the apartment in "The Goodbye Girl" had a similar style but I can't find any images online.

    :)
