Finished mixed cabinets/mixed hardware/two stones kitchen

I would love to share pictures of my finished kitchen. I have been mostly a lurker on the kitchen, appliance and laundry forums, with occasional questions.

I have absorbed so much advice and made much better decisions, based upon your accumulated experiences.

We needed to renovate our 24 year old kitchen, mainly because all of the appliances were way past their expiration date. Something was broken with each of them. While aesthetically my old kitchen still looked pretty good, the layout was challenging. The main working area was the peninsula which was a 10 ft.+ walk from my refrigerator and from the sink. I would be running circles each time I prepared the simplest thing. Standing on hard tile only added to the cumulative fatigue. There was little work area to the right of my cooktop, next to my go-to burner. Our 33" french door refrigerator was the only model that would work in that space. It was inadequate in storage and so we would have to run down to the basement each time we needed more milk or juice. This was very aggravating when you are pouring your morning cereal.

With the help of friends and this forum, I started planning my new kitchen over a year ago. My space is deceptively difficult. There were 4 doors entering the kitchen, a narrow back pantry area, and windows that gave us beautiful views but limited where we could place a refrigerator or stove.

At the very beginning of the process, I found my Bertazzoni Heritage stove in an appliance store and was offered the showroom model at cost. I fell in love with it, as I found the Wolfs and Vikings so massive compared to what I had been used to. The whole kitchen was designed to highlight my beautiful new stove. Our house is a French Provincial, built in the 1920's. I wanted to be in keeping with this style, while not necessarily looking too period. I wanted to keep a formal, separate dining room.

My best decision was to go with a kitchen planner/ cabinet rep towards the end of the process. While I had done huge amounts of research on everything and decided on a lot of things already, she helped make crucial decisions on layout that I was unable to commit to, and helped tweak the whole aesthetic look, suggesting the stained alder wood, the chiffon color as a 3rd color for the pantry, and the wall arm sconces over the sink. Our contractor was superb and the whole process, once (because) all decisions had been made and everything ordered, was 12 weeks from demo.

We also added a 2nd floor laundry room. I am not sure which I love most - the convenience of that or my kitchen island work area.

I love this site and recommend it to everyone that I talk to. Thank you for all of your generous wisdom.

Those are refrigerator drawers under the counter where the toaster oven is. We put butter, jam, and the extra juices, soda, and milk there. We also put a bread box in the 2nd drawer down to the left of these refrigerator doors

facing south We closed off the bottom half of the doorway, but left the arched opening to allow light to flow into our central hallway. I store my cookbooks here. There are wine racks in the right hand cabinet and this is also our phone center. The doorway to breakfast room is on the left and the doorway to the dining room is to the right.

I know that I have provided a lot of picture but if you would like to see my whole album, here is the link:

Love your kitchen! Very ecletic and unexpected. I appreciate you avoiding matchy matchy - so brave! My kitchen (not done yet) isn't very conventional so I'm inspired by your success. I hadn't thought about using our stone for tabletop for our banquette.

Absolutely gorgeous, especially the Bertazzoni! Lovely harmonious color scheme, and the cove molding transition between cabinets and soffits is a wonderful solution.

Tell me about your backsplash and grout color, please. Also, what is your countertop? It is a beautiful kitchen, so authentic to your space. Love it!!

    Dear Lake Girl,
The backsplash uses 6" x 6" Isole 'buttercream" ceramic tiles with Ashbury "Vermouth" color 2" inserts. The inserts are also used to frame the design. I chose this instead of the usual molded trim, as I wanted the backsplash to look more like a mosaic, rather than a framed picture. I am not sure the name of the grout color as I chose it on site with my tile guy. It may be "buttercream?". It is quite tonal to the tiles.

My countertops are Costa Esmeralda around the perimeters, and Madre Perla for the island and bookshelf (the two FB blue grey painted cabinets).

You created such a warm and inviting kitchen-it's absolutely lovely. I especially like it because it doesn't have anything trendy about it and manages to look fresh and classic at the same time. Congrats!

Your kitchen is so very nicely done. I like the calming colors and how you made your kitchen so interesting. I loved looking at your pictures. It looks like a kitchen that is for a warm, friendly, loving family would live in. Thanks for showing your pictures.

Love the DK#47 paint, it's one of my favorites and pairing it with FB blue grey island is absolutely luscious. Plus the flatscreen TV cubby is brilliant. I hope you don't mind if I copy that!

Your completely successful integration of different stuff gives me hope that my own design will work. Looking at the avalanche of creamy kitchens with dark stone makes me waver, but your kitch bucks me up. Thanks for posting it.

    Sunny, warm, and refreshing.

I love the backsplash tile, the floors, the rich
wood cabinetry and the choices in countertop.
All the little details make this kitchen memorable.
The angled counter run for the toaster oven,
the glass uppers, the breakfast nook and the cook
book nook. And of course your oven work great.

    Sunny warm and refreshing.

Wonderful! Your kitchen is HUGE to me, but still is very warm and welcoming. Love the sconces over the sink and, of course, your beautiful Berta!

    Congratulations and enjoy!

Wow your kitchen turned out beautifully. You made some great decisions. Love that range! I've grown to admire the stainless and commercial ranges but I know what you mean how they can be rather massive for some kitchens or people. That is a beauty. What a great place to spend time in.

Ummm....Wow, wow, wow...WOW. I just can't pick out a few things to comment on, because it's such a great kitchen, as a whole. I love it. Love the layout and the combinations of colors and materials.

    One of my favorites.

WOW! You have managed to merge my husband's & my taste in one kitchen (he likes wood tones & I like paint). May I ask the dimensions of your space? Might have to borrow your ideas - just gorgeous. One other questions - what level of granite is Costa Esmerelda - I'm in love! I would also like to second how helpful this board is - very glad to have found it a few weeks ago.

    Dear Strictlybettyboop,
The main area of my kitchen measures 19 ft. long and almost 14 ft. wide. The pantry area measures 5.5 ft. long and 5 ft. wide.

Measuring the countertops, the island is 39.5" wide x 66" long. The aisle between the island and my stove (countertop to countertop) is 37.5 ", between the island and dishwasher/main sink countertops is 39.5 ft. and island and countertop run on west side is 43". Along that wall, after the refrigerator drawers, the width of the cabinets/countertops narrows to 19" to allow more room for the two person seating at the island.

Costa Esmeralda is probably middle to mid-high in level, but I am not sure.

    hope that this is helpful.

The kitchen is absolutely stunning! Mixing the stone and hardware gives it a very 'old' feeling even though its new.
I was wondering about your alder cabinets. Were you/are you worried about the softness of the wood? Alder is near the top of our cabinet wood list and I am curious about your experience with it (staining, etc).

    last modified: 10 years ago

    Dear Johnny Dollar,
My kitchen planner/cabinet rep was the one who suggested alder with this stain to soften the redness in the wood. I had initially wanted natural maple, as in our old kitchen. The light color of maple just was not right with the madre perla, the new oak floors, and all the other colors. The softness of the wood was never discussed and this is the first time that I have heard about it. We are almost empty nesters, so this kitchen will not get as much wear and tear as in a family with young kids. So far no gauges or dents or chips. The cabinets were made halfway across the country from where I live, so staining was not done on my premise. The finish on the cabinets looks very even.
