Whats the best way to paint vent covers?

I would like to paint all my vent covers the same color as the ceiling. I tried one by sanding it and then using a brush, but it just doesn't look good. I can see brush strokes and it was almost impossible to paint all the slats and many still have white spots on them. Is there an easy way to do this? thanks!

I usually paint several light coats with a brush, letting it dry between coats. Then I go over it with a roller to hide the brush marks. It takes a lot of time, but it is the only way I have been able to do it without drips and streaks.

caminnc, how can I get my ceiling paint in a spray paint version?

Aggie, that is my question also! I tried painting the covers on the wall to match the wall paint and they look awful. DH said they looked better white. How would I get our wall paint in a spray can??

My local paint/hardware store can take any color and put it in a spray can. The system they use is SEYMOUR. Maybe you can contact the manufacturer and find out if someone near you has their equipment. Check TruValue Hardware if you have them in your area.

We just use semi-gloss. You really don't notice the difference at all. It's turns out super clean just like it comes from the factory.

Chispa - Thanks for mentioning that paint can be put into a spray version. A couple of my registers are high up on the wall so the white looks horrible (IMHO) so when I pick a paint color I will go to our TruValue and see if they can do this for me!!

I just went to home depot and found a little spray paint can that any paint can be poured into. It was $5. I haven't tried it yet, but it looks promising! The direction say that I will have to add paint thinner to the paint so that it will go through the sprayer. I'll let you know how it works.

I used one of those years ago, and as I recall it worked fine for my purposes.

As far as the "paint thinner", if you use latex paint don't use regular paint thinner! You will use water or a thinner made especially for latex.

Here is a link that might be useful: This is the type of sprayer I used

I have just brushed....done it for years.....always turns out fine. Takes a bit of care, but it eventually all works. I hate white heat vents and cold air returns as well as light switch covers and wall socket covers. they are not architectural accents! Paint them up! Some times a tooth brush to scrub the paint into the cents really well helps.

Spraying makes a lot more sense. I've never seen a decent looking one that was painted with a brush.
