Could this Overstock area rug work?

Next step in MB redo: pick area rug/rugs. Could this leafy one work, possibly joined by a small, calmer rug on the right side of the bed? DonÂt worry about being kind. This rug cost $108.99 and could have a happy home in our guest room!

Notes:

(1) New linens, pillows, accessories, and cord management will come later.

(2) Severe allergies require me to limit stuff with fibers, unless they can be washed weekly in hot water.

(3) The round mirror over the bed eventually will be replaced with some wall art, TBD.

Here is the room as you walk in, with the bath to the left and closet to the right. The room is about 15 feet square, with a nice windows on the left.

Closer in

As you look to the right

And further to the right. A tv will hang on the wall over this yellow chair. I havenÂt sorted out whether to put a slipcover on the chair.

To give you a sense of what another rug would look like, I put some old Flor tiles into a 3/12 by 5 foot rectangle. My sense is that something of this size

would be good, maybe in a small geometric pattern, gold or brown. What do you think?

Not sure what you have in mind for the other fabrics, and overall feel, but I think it's pretty lively and bright in comparison to the rest of the room, and in that restful corner. I'd swap the artwork out if you go in that direction, to change the mix and get a different and a more cohesive feeling. I know the rest of your house has a nice lively atmosphere, but this room feels pretty serene.

    Just my $.02 : )

Hmm, I want to keep the artwork and such. So, is the leafy rug just too bright? I go back and forth on this.

I think the "leafy" rug is busy. LOVE that!!! I'm attracted to leaf themes tho.....so maybe I'm biased. I'd add throw pillows to the bed to pick up a theme of leaves or color off the rug or green chair. More rugs U ask? They'd have to be neutral, that would work. JMO

I like leaf themes, too, but know that I want to keep the room mostly pretty calm.

My thinking was to put a tectured, plain, goldish rug to the right of the bed and possibly in the hallway going into the room. Then add linen/taupe tectured pillows on the green chair and bed. Maybe pick up a leaf pattern on something very small somewhere.

Alternatively, I was thinking of getting one larger rug and have 1/3 of it under the bed. Thoughts?

I really like the rug; I also have an affinity for organic themes, but I agree with Squirrel. I think it's too lively-what a perfect word-for your room. I think something muted in earth tones would maintain the calm projected by your artwork.

FLOR sells something that I could put on the right side of the bed -- and maybe the hallway.

Yes, the leaves are very active and busy with movement. Not a restful pattern or mood. Here's a virtual, lowering the color contrast of the background, which subdues it. It's still not a restful or calm rug and feels in contrast to how your room has been coming along. I really don't care for the rug with the artwork, and you know I just love that lounging corner.

Hmmmm....I see what your are saying. It just might end up in the guest room!

If I look for another rug, would you get one that is larger? This one is a 5x7. Or would you go with two area rugs?

Oooh, I like the second one.

I LOVE your artwork, chair, and lamp composition -- especially the art! IMO, the light color and modern leafy pattern contrast with the traditional artwork, making a great eclectic combination. And the price on the is right!

I love the rug, too, but not so much there. This may sound crazy, but have you thought of a white Flokati-type rug? I think a large one that could extend under the bed might be nice and carry through on the calmness you have going-kind of a Zen feel. You would need a rug pad, but that would just add to the softness.

Yes, Delta, I like the idea of a large rug for a more serene, calm effect than would be by breaking the floor up in segments (visual clutter and a more active 'rhythm' around the room, so to speak).

Here are some colors and patterns to peruse, for type of color and effect. (Had to tweak the colors on a couple because they were too off; ie, so they're just pattern examples.)

I love the leafy rug! It has a voice. I think your room can handle that.

Sorry Squirrel, not crazy about any of those you posted.

"Sorry Squirrel, not crazy about any of those you posted."

Well, the first two she posted were ones that the OP chose.

deltabreeze, I thought allergies are a consideration for you (not meaning to pry)? If they are, you definitely don't need two rugs...your floors are beautiful! I'd consider the health issues first; how can you clean these types of wool rugs weekly? I do think one rug would be nice; it creates a cozy "vignettte" when looking down the hallway...provide this a public hallway that "outsiders" would be viewing?

Like I said ... I liked the leafy rug.

You are all wonderful and I appreciate your candid comments! I am perplexed right now and need to think about this. I like the leafy rug, though I do worry about its liveliness.

In terms of squirrel's mock ups (thank you for doing this, squirrel, it is very helpful), I like 1a the best. Somehow, the large scale of the others feels off.

Yes, the rug is visible from the upstairs hallway (the first pic of my series is taken from the upstairs hall). And yes, I need to limit fibers my room (so a second rug is not the best for me). If I do a second rug, a small, flat, and easily washable FLOR square works best (you just pic up a carpet square and run it under the water).

Any other thoughts? Does the electic approach of the leafy rug work better for you -- or something very calm? While I like the long shag cyn suggests, I only could do it for a small rug.

    Rug types are so subjective.

While I would never think of having anything other than an Oriental, Persian or Sumak, in my home, there are so many other styles and they look nice in other decorating schemes.

Your bedroom has always been one of my favorites, since you started working on it. You have a great eclectic vibe going on. That painting has got to stay. :)

I do think that your first choice is a bit bright, and the eye couldn't help being drawn to it, but I don't think you have to lose the leaves.

Something more muted like #2, in the latest set of examples, where the pattern is bigger and doesn't fight with your art, would still be calm, but, at the same time, be a bit contemporary.

Well I like the original leafy one and the first one Squirrel did for you. I think I'd go with a narrow rug on the sides. Maybe a runner even.

I don't see that the original floral rug is too lively for the room. It think it's lovely there.

From a practical standpoint, I would think twice about a rug with so much white in it because that wouldn't stay clean long at my house with dogs and dirty shoes.

What justgotabme said! :0) Those 2 are my favorites also! Ya don't want your room to be boring do ya? :0) Rugs are art for your floor!

My current thinking is that I like a contemporary rug, rather than something muted.

That said, I am thinking that this 5x8 rug is small. An 8x10 would allow 1/4 of my bed to sit on it and give me a little rug on either side of the bed.

You can do a contemporary rug! I'm gathering that muted is not what's going to work for you, personally. Would that be just the earth-toned muteds or even the softer, light color of the last rug in the series (excluding the type of pattern on it)?

I do think that the leafy rug does not actually work. Not with the artwork that's there. You could change the tone of the room, though. It's counter to the restful feeling your room has at this point, if that's still the goal. But, you can always play the room to the rug you love. I'd just look for some different artwork that's more in tune with that in some way. Love a great big piece by that chair.

I love eclectic rooms. But in a successful one, the things in them do relate on some level. It's not simply about mixing different things that you love. That just becomes a room full of stuff, so to speak.

When you have the right rug and the right one for you in there, it will sing to you. You won't have to ask if it works. It will just be an ahhh. Listen to what your head and heart are telling you. They're probably right.

Glad you're thinking about the larger rug. I think three smaller rugs are too much for your room. There's enough going on, without breaking the floor up into segments or patterns. And that effect, also, would not achieve 'calm.' A larger rug, about half under the bed would work well with the mood, and also ground everything.

If you have any more you'd like to see, just shoot me an email. I'd be happy to do that for you. Everything is all set up and it's no trouble at all : )

    Love your home!

    Hi Delta Breeze,

I really like the leafy rug and I think your room can handle it. Maybe change up some of the art work. I don't think it's too lively at all. Of all the others posted I agree with 1a being nice. I think if you bring in some pillows with simple leaf patterns or even artwork with nature it works well. I just saw some simple artwork the other day. Not sure if it was Restoration Hardware, or Pottery Barn. Crate and Barrel had some lovely organic bedding that would fit in beautifully. Simple, but with texture. Love the room. Do you mind telling me
what color you painted your bedroom?. The paint is so serene and neutral.

Matching a rug to wall art? IMO, real art shouldn't match your sofa or your rug.

Scanmike: the color is Ellen Kennon's Lichen-- green, with some greyish yellow tones. Ashen green is a darker version of this same shade.

Artwork: I plan to keep the paintings. Though DH's and my tastes run much more contemporary, the oil painting are from my late parents and I want to display them. They don't look good against the wall colors in other parts of my house, but look fine against the Lichen green.

In terms of the leafy rug, I am fond of it and don't mind its boldness. Something about it isn't quite right, though, for this room. I like its pattern scale and colors, but the movement is busy. Plus, I think an 8 x10 would work better.
The trick will be to marry our more transitional/modern tastes with the moodiness of the artwork.

Squirrel, I may take you up on your photoshop offer. Thanks.

Thanks for the paint info. I seem to be always drawn to green!

I like the leafy rug, it's refreshing to see a rug that isn't oriental.

delta: Just wanted to comment on the allergy perspective as I've dealt with severe allergies myself for many years--though am now cured after 10-yrs of allergy shots. I would assume you have a dust mite allergy if you are washing bedding weekly in hot water. Are you sure you do not have a wool allergy? Is there any chance you are chemically sensitive? Since you already have FLOR carpet squares I assume you do not react to them so why not put that in your room? I would think the very low pile would tend to hold less dust and as you say they are easy to clean vs. having a larger rug cleaned--probably no more than once/year is my guess. Or what about a flatweave or Sumak rug?

I love this Sumak one on O which I come in both 8x10 and 10x12:

    Your room is so peaceful....
    I love 1a & 2, both are subtle yet pretty~

    I like #1a and #4 in squirrel's mockups.

Valinsv and others who have asked: I am allergic to many, many things. Some of my allergies (dust mites, pollen, animals) have declined after 15+ years (and continuing) of allergy shots, but I am far from cured. I find that the best approach is to minimize chemically stuff and fibers that cannot be washed easily (carpeting, drapes, etc).I am not absolutest about this, though, and make tradeoffs.

In terms of this room, I want an area rug for decor and for DH who does yoga everyday (I would rather drink coffee). FLOR is a great product for people like me because the nap is short and easy to clean. I could end up with FLOR for that reason (see the pic below), but have a yen for a patterned carpet with pile.

I really like the leafy rug I have there now, but I sense that something a bit larger and less bright would work better.

Thank you everyone for your help!

Delta: I feel for you, been there, done that. First off, regarding the allergies, has your allergist ever retested you and adjusted your mix? Not just the annual remix, but adjusted the allergens and potency? That is finally what cured me after about 8 years on shots. There were some allergens that I no longer reacted to and those he was able to eliminate from my mix. With those removed, he was able to double the potency of the remaining allergens. Then after 1-2 years of the adjusted mix, I went on long vacation so had to stop shots and just never found the need to go back on again.

I know what you mean about tradeoffs in decor vs. health, but your bedroom is where you spend 1/3 of your life as my allergist always would remind me. I think a low pile rug like FLOR or a sumak plus your DH using a yoga mat on top of that since it won't be very plush would seem a good compromise. Did you see the sumak rug I linked? There was a recent thread on sumaks here with lots of pics. I'm actually going to see if that rug is in a smaller size for my foyer since I need a low pile there for door clearance.

Somehow it seems easier to pick a rug for someone else. My family room I am still undecided on....

Val-- yes, I have been retested (blood and skin testing) and reformulating the shots helped immensely. So much so, that I now sleep happily under a down comforter! But there are some things that still bother me and I just organize my life to minimize them (things that harbor molds, certain food processing chemicals, hair dyes. . .) My plan for the room was to leave bare most of the area around the bed (including where my head is). Yes, I can see my allergist shaking his head, but my sense is that would work o.k.

I like the style of the sumak rug you posted very much, but I want less green and more ivory and brown (the room already has exceed my green quotient). Is a Sumak rug very low pile?

What do you think about the Flor that I posted. Too boring? Hey, how about I pick your rug and you can pick mine?

Oh, I had meant to post that I like the FLOR rug very much. It's very calming and seems to carry the zen mood you have in the room. Soumak rugs are flatweave so that is why I am suggesting for you. I admit I am not an expert and don't own one. See the thread below about them though and Allison's pics and comments. Intuitively, I think that would be less dust probs given the flatweave. Are you sure you are not allergic to wool, though?

Just let me know what rug I need to buy, K ;-)

I think the leaf rug makes the room! Yes, definitely the leaf rug.

I am so perplexed about the leafy rug!!! Can we come to a concensus? Is it:
    A) Too small for this room?
    B) Too busy for this room?
    C) Just right?

As for me, I am not bothered by B, but worry about A. I like contemporary. I like the colors. The light background is not a problem (no pets or young kids here and we leave the dirt downstairs).

Val -- I am ok with wool. I wear it frequently without a problem. I do like the idea of a flat weave carpet and will check them out more. The pics in the link you sent were beautiful.

Delta: I keep looking for a consensus as well in my decorating, but it rarely happens. As for your original rug, I actually like it but I don't feel it connects to the art on your wall which is more traditional. I think squirrelheaven nailed it on her original post--either keep the rug or the artwork, but not both.
