granite countertop selection help please

Hi group,

We are in the process of selecting a countertop. We initially thought Quartz but then got sticker shock!

So now we are looking at granite selections. Does anyone out there have granite counters with colors similar to ours(sorry don't have pics right now). We have porcelain tiles which look like slate called Biltmore Grey; they have greys, blues, browns. We are having cabinets made which are white maple and will be finished clear, no stain. The windows and trim are doug fir. The wall paint is Aura Shelburne Buff which is a light brownish color kind of like a desert khaki.

When I get home I'll try to see if I can get some pics up. We are leaving tomorrow morning to look at granite and wanted some advance advice from other folks. Personally I cannot match colors very well my wife will look at me and say "you're wearing that shirt with those pants!?" :)

Thank you,

Wade

This is similar to my sons bathroom. I used Sierra brown for his vanity. It is really nice.

I'll take a look at that, I had not thought of brown. When we briefly considered quartz, we thought about raven-4120 ceasarstone, see link below.

    that is a "deep gray"
I'm going to take a tile, paint sample and a piece of maple with me to the store and try holding it up to the granite to get an idea. But it is amazing how things look different to me when it is in place versus trying to compare small samples. I don't have that kind of artistic vision. I was hoping to see a picture of a kitchen with granite counters and a similar color scheme. Well I'm leaving work now and I'll try to get home and take some pics of some of my current colors and post them.

    thanks,
    Wade

If you want a gray granite, imperial pearl is very inexpensive right now (at least in my area).

Oops forgot to include a pic:

but it can vary a bit, like all granites. It looks a bit bluer here than any of the slabs I've seen--think it's just poor white balance in the shot.

OK I got home and got some pics I took from a few days ago and took a few more this evening and put them on a web page. You can see the current colors at the link provided below. Don't mind the messy kitchen. I'm doing this in stages and maintaining a working kitchen all along the way. We should not be without a kitchen more than 2 days max during the process.

We went to the store and looked at granite today. Considering our floor with all of its textures, we need a counter which will not compete with the floor. I like the Ceasarstone Raven 4120 and found the AB honed to have a similar look only it is a bit darker. Any other options for granite which has a similar color to the raven? Also looking for very little texture or variation in the granite. To see the floor and where we are at in the process of the remodel, use the link I posted previously.

    Thanks,
    Wade

You won't find a real granite that's that shade with no movement. If you go with AB be sure to test it to make sure it's the real thing and not color-enhanced.

    Have you considered soapstone?

Thanks writersblock, we have a soapstone woodstove and have found it to stain easily. Never thought of it for a counter surface. Will have to do a bit of research on that one.

I imagine the soapstone is very heat resistant considering the outside of our stove gets hot enough to cause blisters if you touch it. When we had a power outage we put a tea kettle on it and boiled water on the soapstone but the kettle left marks on the stone. I also had the idea to put some nuts on the stove to warm them and the oils in the nuts stained the stone.

here's a site to look at different granite colors - tho they'll be a bit different depending on the slab.

how about Juparana Oro? penta gold? viara? Barocco Gold?

You'll find many, many kitchens here with soapstone counters, and a number of threads about soapstone, if it interests you.
