Bought a few items at Home Goods for my FR - need feedback

Based on feedback on my recent family room thread I went to Home Goods to looking for a larger urn for my plant and something to fill the vacant TeV to better disguise the unattractive side view of the TV from my kitchen which is to the right of the family room. Right now I cannot put the plant inside the urn but it looks like sufficent space to transplant it--which when I do will lower it as right now it looks too tall.

What do you think? Either one or both?

{{!gwi}}

I really like this pottery. The scale is much larger than what I had before though I think I will still need something to draw the eye upwards--either with a picture or some tall reeded type plants. The plants I got before don't seem quite right so will return to Michaels this afternoon. Or is this type of pottery bettter left unfilled?

The urn seems to go perfectly with my sectional:

Below is a link to my previous thread on my FR where there are lots of pictures of the room.

That is a Dizygotheca elegantissima right? It is too big for the urn you chose. The width of the urn should be larger that the with of the tree or else it looks top-heavy. Trees do not look good in footed urns either.

I would get a low, wide, round clay pot and place the tree in it and next to the jug n the corner. That corner needs to be filled in a bit more. It's a beautiful plant. The fact that it is thin, and nice and tall, and sparse, makes it better suited for the corner with the jug. It is not accomplishing what you want it do to next to the TV. You need a bushy plant there. A big leaf philodendron would fill the bill. I'm not feeling the footed urn for the space. It is too formal for the casual family room. It looks like an outdoor urn. A big bold clay pot will hold a big bushy plant, and the pot and big leaves will conceal the TV cords.

I LOVE that water jar in the corner, it has such an ancient historic look about it, and I think it fills the corner beautifully. I thought the tree in the urn looked fabulous, but can see what dilly dally is saying about it and now am not sure but it's a beautifully proportioned urn and for some reason I just like it there.

The garden urn is beautiful but unfortunately it's classical in style and would only fit into a traditional setting. Also, I do agree that it's better suited for a patio or garden. The jug might be a possibility but I can't really envision it next to the television. It does look good by the bookcase, and it could remain empty or you could put in a few bare branches from a tree or bush.

I also love the water jar in the corner like bigdoglover. I also love the tree but feel the urn should be lower and wider just like dilly_dally feels. Of course I love the TV and the TV console. Valinsv, you just have very good taste.

Val, you have such a pretty home. I love the plant. Do you know the name?

OK, the water jug stays. I think what I might do is to stack two prints one above the other on the wall over the jug. Then perhaps 1-2 tall branches in the jug. Drat! I really like that urn and was so hoping it would work, but agree it probably needs to be wider. I did get a larger one also, but it's much too big. Will look tomorrow at the nursery to see if they have anything.

lynne: Thanks for the compliment, but I'm not feeling like I have very good taste since I'm having to return a lot of stuff. It's all trial and error... with folks like dilly_dally to steer me away from too many costly errors.

mammie: I do not know the name of the plant--perhaps it's the one that dily_dally called it. I bought it last year at Costco, quite reasonable. I've seen them also in the indoor section of Summerwinds Nursery for about triple the price.

I agree with Dilly dally that the tree looks awesome in the corner! I do like that water jug why cant that go next to the tv with tall reeds and grasses and such for height and fullness to disguise the cords. I really really liked the tree in the corner next to that gorgeous bookshelve and lamp. Don't feel bad it is a lot of trial and error for everyone who decorates! Even professionals do that.

I know this isn't what you asked, but can you nudge the TV stand over, so it's centered on the wall? I think of someone walking through the door and stumbling on the wood. If it's a closet, then even more reason. The pitcher is nice, but it's sort of lost in the corner, I think. Don't put anything in it.

Sorry. That is not a Dizygotheca elegantissima. I looked at it and saw that is was trained, and did not see the leaves up close and jumped to a conclusion when I asked about it. I do not know what it is. But now I am curious. I'm going to check my books.

Now it sounds like the plant should go back in the corner and water jug near the TV with some tall branches? OK, I can do that.

Before going out and returning anything I wanted to see if you think I could transplant the large fern in my LR in the more formal urn and use the ceramic planter in the FR with this plant (don't know the name). The fern is too large for the FR so the plants would need to be transplanted. I measured and even though the urn looks smaller it is actually the same diameter at the top and is much deeper and the cavity extends down to the base. When I planted the fern earlier this year it had a very small root ball but I felt it needed the larger planter to give it more weight at the base.

Here is the location of the fern in my LR though it's been temporarily displaced for the Christmas tree. Ah, holiday rearranging.... The urn would raise the height about 8" +/- which could be a good thing to balance out the weight of the corner curio.

What do you think? I also have the wicker basket here too--though the majority on my earlier thread did not like it much.

And so I am back to where I started (more or less) with the addition of the water jug. I added a couple of branches I was using in my bathroom, though if we go with this look, I'd get more. With moving the console back to center I am again contemplating adding one of the large round clocks over the TV.

I like that very much!I think the jug looks amazing with the branches and I like it next to the tv. I think your tree is a marginata don't know the scientific name though. And I believe that is a palm rather than a fern, although it is very very late and I could be mistaken. I love the room! I like the palm in your living room it adds a front parlor air to the room.

I would not put a round clock over the TV. It's going to look like you have added a head to the TV and cabinet, and besides, you have enough "hard" things there now.

Personally, I would get the side finished and not try to dress that wall further. If I were going to do anything more, I would put a wide bright orange glass bowl on the second shelf on the right. It would pull the eye down to show off that pretty cabinet.

I like the height of the tree when it is in the urn, but agree the urn isn't quite right. I also don't like the style of the urn in your room.

Before going out and returning anything I wanted to see if you think I could transplant the large fern in my LR in the more formal urn and use the ceramic planter in the FR with this plant (don't know the name).

Transplanting the palm into the urn would look great! The brown ceramic pot is a bit too earthy for the room although it did not look bad, and the formal footed pot would look fabulous in that corner in the room with the piano and formal seating.

Unfortunately the brown pot is too small for the DRACAENA MARGINATA. (I found the name of it.) You need a pot that is at least as wide as the plant or it will look top heavy. You can put another plant it the brown pot and still use it somewhere. Its a nice pot.

This looks great too, and centering the piece does lend more stability. Orange bowl in the cabinet sounds like a great idea.

There is more than one right way to do this and I think you've found at least two really good ones.

I agree on no clock over the TV. It will look like a big bullseye. I hide my TV, but in your particular composition that TV of itself has sort of a sculptural quality about it, and I'd just let it be what it is. It looks great.

Well, it sounds like it's about done then. I hadn't thought of putting decor items in the console--more components and videos/DVDs--DH is still figuring out that side of things as you can tell since the right side is empty. It's his "baby", but if there is an open slot I would definitely look for an orange bowl.

dilly_dally: Thanks for the suggestions on the planter. If it needs to be that wide, it's a good thing it's back in the corner since the other spot was a tad congested. I'll look around for something with that in mind--though probably in the new year.
