Woven shades in kitchen/great room????

Hello all!

(I also posted this in the Kitchens Forum)

Here are pics of our space:

kitchen:

breakfast nook:

The window above our sink gets a lot of sun when the sun is setting. So I am considering getting woven shades with a liner. I will have to get the same shades for the breakfast nook, french doors that are nearby, and the adjacent dining/great room area. I am considering doing an outside mount so that I can mount the shades higher. Thus the valance would be higher and would not take away from our views. So my questions are:

1. Should I do woven shades? Do you have any other suggestions?

2. What color shades should I do? Similar to perimeter cabs or island cab? The floors are natural white oak, sorry I don't have a pic of the floor.

3. If I do outside mount, does the wall get "rubbed" by the shade every time you open/close the shade? I don't want any wall/paint damage. Would I have to get edge binding?

Would love to hear your input! Would also love to see pics of your kitchen window coverings! Thanks in advance!!

Here is a link to Levolor shade colors. I am considering Bamboo Essence Shibori which is similar to perimeter cabs

I am also considering Kirsch Mesa White which is lighter than Shibori.
(marmoreus, I hope you don't mind me using your pic! I love the way your shades look in your beautiful home!)

Dark colored shades will show every speck of dust. Also, unless you plan to keep them out of the way of cooking grease and sink splashes, I'd think about putting something easier to keep clean in those areas, like a fabric valance or swag that blends with the general tones and values of the other window treatments. If your flooring is light, maybe going with a lighter finish on the blinds would work. Plus they would let more light through than a dark finish, assuming the lining is somewhat translucent and not room darkening.
You might want to consider your final wall color when choosing a finish for blinds, if it's not already on the walls.

Thank you saypoint for your input! I hadn't thought about the dust that is a very good point! I just brought home some more sample books from Home Depot and will take a look at them today. Our wall color is SW Kilim Beige which is a neutral beige. It doesn't show up well in the breakfast nook picture. Thanks again and Happy New Year!

Kilim Beige has pinkish undertones which are visible in the first picture you posted. Make sure you compare the blinds or other window treatments to your wall color as well as your floor and cabinets. Making a sample board with your existing finishes is a good way to see what will work together.

what color liner would you put behind a dark brown woven shade if you still want some light?

ajmettel, You would have to get a light filtering liner, depending on the brand, they come in several different colors. I was looking at Levolor and in the sample book it recommends what color liner looks best with each shade.

I decided against the woven wood shades in these rooms due to the large stack at the top. If I wanted to pull the shades all the way up, there would be a 12 inch stack at the top. I still haven't figured out what to do!

I'm not sure if this will help you or not, Jane but I have unlined woven blinds from H Depot- insided mounted.
I have one over my kitchen sink window as well, also inside mounted.
(plse excuse the poor cell phone pic)
