Protruding Hood over deep 30" countertop - looks weird?

Hi all!

I'm just twiddling my thumbs, waiting for the builders to start demo... and trying to picture what will unfold these next few weeks....

Anyway, I have been searching for pictures, but can't find many (a couple are on really old threads and pics have since been removed).. thought maybe I'd tap into good ole GW and see if anyone has any ideas. Here's my situation:

-36" BS rangetop set on a 30" deep counter. So there will be 4-6" of counter behind the rangetop.

-42" MA Hood insert will be 27" deep, but since the countertops were extended to 30" deep, there will have to be a bumpout from the wall on the custom cabinetry. (read about steel liners here, but I don't think that will look good on a wood surround.) Ideally, I'd want the hood to come out 3" in FRONT of the rangetop to maximize capture area... but yikes, now that means the hood will protrude ~33" from the wall. Since it's a custom hood, I suppose that's doable, but is that absurd?

-Another caveat: Two 2' windows flanking range/hood, so NO upper cabs touching the hood. I'm super excited about the windows, but also now worried that the stand-alone, extra deep hood will look weird or klunky. In addition to the extra few inches in the back of the countertop, all windows will have a 7" bumpout. So again, love the spaciousness, but now will that hood disproportionately protrude out? This WILL be visible from my front door entrance!

Uppers to the right and left of the windows will be 15" deep.

Anyone have any advice? Or pictures to share? I know the cabinetry makers will want specifics, and I don't know what will work aesthetically.

Here's a pic of a design I was hoping to do with the hood surround, or something similar to this. Just not sure how it will look now, with deeper counters and next to the windows (7" bumpout sills). will I need to sacrifice some capture area so it won't look ridiculously deep?

My KA rangetop comes out to 29" and the custom cabinet hood edge comes out 24", there is only an inch behind and in front of the insert. I don't think it is typical for hoods to overlap the rangetop in the front. If it did, you would want it to be set pretty high to avoid head bashing, and that would negatively impact efficacy. You have overlap on the sides, which is good. Remember to turn your hood on before you start cooking, to get the air flow pattern going.
Hoods can look gorgeous flanked by windows. Is yours not yet designed? I also considered two-tone and ended up going for an understated, unobtrusive design because mine is flanked by cabinets and I have other strong design elements.

I have a 27" deep hood over my 36" Bluestar, and it sits just about even with the front of the range. Keep in mind, on the Bluestar there is about a 4-1/2" ledge in front of the front burners. I also set my hood at the max. height of 36" to keep from head banging.

Nope, haven't designed specifics yet, that's what I'm trying to achieve - just have the dimensions of the insert & rangetop we're purchasing.

So... to clarify, if designing a wood vent hood box around the insert, the front of the hood box should only come out to the front of the burners vs. the front of the rangetop? At least that's what it looks like in the picture.

And definitely should not extend/overlap beyond the front of the counter or rangetop knobs?

Anyone by any chance have a picture of a deep hood not flanked by cabs?

I'm having open pass-through windows on either side of my range hood, and I did just have some problem with the design that had been planned on looking... well, sticking out like a sore thumb. Mine only will stick out about 22" (I think) but I'm following the good GW advice of painting my hood the same as the wall color. My 'paint program' experiments with wood stained hoods really looked 'heavy' with nothing on either side. Just something to think about.

I do think that a hood sticking out further than the counter might be overbearing...?

My friend used an island hood between flanking windows so she could get max coverage. Looks and functions beautifully.

If it doesn't cover the burners, it's not capturing the cooking products. Bump it out, and cover the bumpout with custom stainless. It's what Oldbat2b did, and hers looks fine. The metal insert also has to cover the wood that is directly over the burners. Remember wood over fire is a fire hazard. It's easier to clean greasy metal than to scrub the finish off the wood by doing so repeatedly. If the hood isn't deeper than the burners, and is over them, the hood has to be placed higher than optimal for ventilation in order to comply with fire and safety codes.
