Coming to Georgia????

I got this in email...i may have posted it before...but it speaks volumes of the state in which I reside so thought I'd share it again!

Coca Cola is ours, and unless you've had one in a green six-and-a-half ounce bottle, with a slight crust of ice on top, you don't know what the real thing is.And you might want to try pouring about half a pack of salted peanuts into one sometime.

If it weren't for a Georgian named Crawford Long of Jefferson--- open-heart surgery would hurt like heck.

True Georgians say 'ma'am and sir' and call their mothers 'mama' and their fathers 'daddy'.

They know that 'y'all' is perfectly good English and never means just one person.

'Fixin to' is perfectly acceptable, too.

And if y'all don't like the way we talk, Delta (which is also ours) is ready when you are.

Long before the Olympics brought the world's greatest athletes to Atlanta, we gave the world Ty Cobb, Jackie Robinson, Walt Frazier, Luke Appling, Johnny Mize, Fran Tarkenton, Bobby Jones, Wyomia Tyus, and Herschel Walker.

If you don't know who these people are, you ought to find out before you go to bed tonight.

Long after the Atlanta Olympics have faded from memory, the greatest tournament in golf will still be played in Augusta every April, with or without Jessie Jackson's and Martha Burke's approval, and on autumn Saturdays, 90,000 or so Red-and-Black faithful will gather in Athens for a prayer meeting between the hedges.

No matter how many times the Braves play in the World Series, nothing will match the excitement of that first one.

The Stone Mountain carving is lots bigger than the one on Mt. Rushmore and the people etched into the side of Stone

Mountain deserve the honor.

It wasn't just about slavery. Atlanta was called 'the city too busy to hate,' back in the sixties, because it really was, and we should be proud of that fact.

In 1864 Sherman burned Atlanta and much of Georgia in his March to the sea.

Crack cocaine is bringing more harm to Atlanta than Sherman ever dreamed of.

We don't grow the most peaches, but we still deserve to be called the ' Peach State ' because ours are the sweetest. That includes the Georgia peaches that don't grow on trees.

We do produce the most peanuts, pecans, and poultry.

Elvis wasn't ours, but Otis Redding, James Brown, the Allman Brothers, Johnny Mercer, Joe South, Ray Charles, Bill Anderson, Brenda Lee, Trisha Yearwood and Alan Jackson are.

So are Sidney Lanier, Joel Chandler Harris, Margaret Mitchell and Alice Walker. And I still miss Lewis Grizzard every day.

Julia Roberts may be Georgia's prettiest movie star, but Holly Hunter is the most talented. Dakota Fanning may one day surpass them both.

FDR adopted us. His 'Little White House' in Warm Springs is exactly as it was the day he died there, near the end of World War II. Every person coming thru Georgia needs to visit Warm Springs.

Roosevelt's New Deal put Georgians to work and turned an entire generation of her people into 'yellow Dog' Democrats.

Georgia once had three governors at the same time. Lester Maddox wasn't one of them, but was elected by the General Assembly without getting a majority of the popular vote. He did a good job too, God rest his soul.

Gone With the Wind belongs to us. We own it. Not only is it one of our own and is about us, but it's also one of the great novels of all time and an absolute film classic-and we shouldn't apologize for liking it.

WSB Radio and Television also means 'Welcome South Brother.'

She ain't what she used to be, but she's not as bad as the Atlanta Journal Constitution has become.

The Brown Thrasher, the Cherokee Rose, and the Live Oak are our symbols.

Proud, decent, honest people are our heritage.

The best barbecue in the world is served at Holcomb's in White Plains, but Open Air in Jackson is real tasty too.

The best seafood is at The Shell House in Savannah.

The best catfish is at Henderson's in Covington.

The best sausage is at Stripling's in Crisp County.

The best fried chicken in the world is served at Buckner's Restaurant in Jackson.

Grits is groceries and sugar doesn't belong in cornbread.

God intended for iced tea to be served sweet.

And lastly, Georgia ain't exactly heaven, but it will do until I get there.

Sometimes I need a gentle reminder of why I live here...this did it for me...it may be hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk...but I still am glad I moved here 24 years ago!

I love Georgia. You forgot the band REM (and Michael Stipes) from Athens... and I think the best barbeque is at Vandy's on Vine St. in downtown Stateboro. Always have to bring home a few pounds along with a 1/2 gallon for Brunswick stew. I supply my own white bread and sweet tea.

Bet there's a lot more to be proud of, too.

"The best fried chicken in the world is served at Buckner's Restaurant in Jackson." AMEN to that!!!!! i am always telling people to travel to Atlanta that it is worth the drive. They REALLY question my food tastes when they find out it is located on BUCKSNORT ROAD! LOL

Grits is groceries and sugar doesn't belong in cornbread. but G.R.I.T.S. means Girls Raised In The South!

God intended for iced tea to be served sweet. HECK yeah! Had a potential doctoral student visit WVU from Alabama. First thing I told her was not to bother asking for sweet tea in WV- IF you could find it, it just isn't the same. I was too late, she had already found out the hard way. I assured her she could still get Luisianne Tea Bags and make her own, LOL

People in WV get a real kick out of me "ma'am" and "sir" ing them- especially in work/school meetings.

I HATED living in the Atlanta suburbs but I will always love being from Georgia.

    Amen, Liz.

FYI Patti - When I got called for jury duty in January I was put in a room while waiting for questioning. Michael Stipes was sitting right next to me for over an hour. He got excused - I didn't. DD was upset I didn't ask for his autograph.

i can say i LUV LUV LUV atlanta!! we went up last labor day for a week and loved it soooo much we are going back the week before thanksgiving for a week. i don't know why we didn't travel there sooner! we stayed in midtown and hit the GA aquarium, atlanta zoo, the botanical garden, fernbank natural history museum and the high museum, all for $65 each person (city pass). we also took 4,000 pictures! we were able to walk to alot of those places too! we liked it sooo much i was scoping out all the new housing going in around there LOL, plotting incase we can end up there when DH is done in school ;-))) now that i know where things are i'm keeping my eye on what exhibits come to the high museum so we can just drive up for a long weekend when i want to see an exhibit. they got quite a coup in the art world w/ the louvre exhibits and now the 1st emperor's terracotta warriors exhibit and Victoria & Albert musuem exhibit (medieval & renaissance)...my head spins when i think of all the things we'll get to see in nov! ohhh and the food...i'll be off the weight watchers wagon for sure lol. can't wait! ~ liz

Liz, I am glad you had so much fun. I think after spending 34 years growing up there kind of took the "shine" off the attractions. All I see any more is the traffic, smog, crime, and noise.

if you plan to be there in early December, let me know. We will be going back to see family and maybe we can meet! not sure what dates we will be there yet.

And I always thought the only two reasons I would come to Georgia was to see you and Chipper Jones!!!!

OMG Liz, you make me want to jump on the next Delta flight!!!

I know Jon loves the south! Being a true "desert rat" the humidity gets to him, but says "I can adjust...it is so green, the people go out of their way to be friendly! And the food is awesome!" He has even eaten collard greens!

janie, we are suppossed to be up there thur nov 20 - tue nov 25, assuming my DH's test schedules' comply w/ my vacation plans lol. we need to get up there after Nov 16 but before sometime late dec. to catch all 3 art exhibits i want to see. dh has finals till dec. 12 and we have a cruise from dec 13-18 so i know we won't be there those weeks.

i grew up in chicago and have lived in orlando for 10+ yrs now and really miss the mix of modern and old you find in big cities. atlanta has alot of beautiful old buildings and alot of skyscrapers mixed in too. we often pulled off the residential roads to get out and take pics of some of these old houses, there were amazing details to these places. there were some not so good neighborhoods and some very nice ones too but everything seem to blend in well. everyone we encountered was really nice, infact outside of huntsville AL i've never meet so many people who went out of their way w/ southern hospitality!

the company i work for is setting up another very large nursery location in Dawson GA and i'm looking forward to seeing that too. maybe even transferring up there between atlanta and dawson someday...i have a co-worker living outside peachtree city right now, we'll see! ~ liz

In my younger years, I traveled around to ride roller coasters. I love amusement parks, but none can surpass Six Flags over GA. Back in the 80's, it had THE best coasters!!

Well..I have to disagree on the BBQ...Peytons in Veedersburg, Indiana has the best BBQ in the WORLD and I brought back 20 pounds ++ last summer...You can't beat the Brunswick Stew here though...

Liz..make sure you take a ghost tour while here in November and a Sedway Tour......you've hit lots of the high spots of ATlanta...now try to hit some of the outside areas...Marietta has loads of Civil War history...Stone Mountain is a must see...

Lindy I can't believe you were almost on a jury with Michael Stipe...how cool is that?...I got called in my county a few years ago and Pascal English was the presiding judge and also the runner up of "Survivor" that year...after explaining how the jury would work..he asked for questions...I raised my hand and asked if there would be a photo op...everyone just burst out laughing...he is such a great guy and I wish he would have won!!

Wanda...my kids doooo love Six Flags...they have some pretty awesome rides there!!

Audrey stuff Vickers in the suitcase and come on down!!...Chipper is still here and your baby boy is only a few hours south!!

Congrats RonM on the title!! That's something to be mighty proud of!!!!

For me that would be "Coming back to Georgia"???

I was born in the Crawford W. Long Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. Mama and Daddy were married in Atlanta, but Daddy was in the Army, and they went to Minnesota where my older sister was born (Mama was born in Minnesota, too). Then, back to Georgia before I was born (then we were sent to Europe). Unfortunately, I haven't made it back to Georgia since then, but someday I will!

Liz I'm more impressed that you got to meet Pappy English than I am of sitting next to Michael Stipes!
