How is the wood counter holding up?

I absolutely love this home and keep coming back to it again and again. I love the look of the wood counters and want to do one on my island, but I've been warned against having wood counters where your stove is (range in island). Any idea how this one is holding up? What is the product used to finish? I don't want to be too precious with my cooking area, but I love the look.
