Pumice??

Does anyone know if there is an Australian source for pumice? For those that don't know, pumice is a volcanic rock, very light because it is filled with air pockets. It has superior drainage to all other soils, and is perfect as the base for cacti potting mixes. It is readily availabe in New Zealand for quite cheap, but to have it shipped over quite expensive unless in bulk. Any comments or information would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Jon, I think the Sydney Society imported pumice some time ago.email Roy Price rprice@optusnet.com.au and ask him if there is any available. Joylene.

Pumice is often washed up on ocean beaches and sometimes you can find quite large drifts of it. But being so absorbent, it might be quite a task leaching all the salt out of it.

Jon, I agree with Tony.....pumice is often washed up on ocean beaches.. I have found it on King Island, Surfers Paradise and Tassie beaches.
It drifts in from some volcanic activity somewhere..is sometimes tear shaped ... has many perforations...greyish -white in colour and..(best clue) .. it floats.
A poly-styrene box, broken up, would provide almost the same base for you, wouldn't it?
