Hi Chris, I have planted them to a depth of 10cm without harm. You might like to try cutting the stem a bit shorter and leaving it to heal for a week or so and then plant it. If you find any nuts in or around the roots they are seeds and can be planted pointy side up. Mine were a gift too, and they have thrived on abuse and neglect!
