Mucuna bennettii (Flame Vine)

I have recently moved to the rainforest village of Kuranda just north of Cairns. In the garden is a Schefflera or Queensland Umbrella Tree (Brassaia actinophylla) covered with a vine. The previous owners, who were not gardeners, told me that it had red flowers on it in winter. This vine has just come into flower and is covered with the most spectacular flowers I have ever seen. It is Mucuna bennettii (Flame Vine). A.B. Graf in his book Tropica describes it as Âprobably the most showy of all tropical climbers and it certainly is! Why is it not more popular? How can I propagate it as I am sure my friends would like one? I am going to plant a Jade vine (Strongylodon macrobotrys) on the Schefflera next to it which should look really stunning!

It should set seed that will be ready around Nov.
Not the easiest vine to grow without a very warm wet climate , like we lucky people have up here .

Hi dpsgkp, I was very interested to read your posting re the Flame Vine and would like to ask if I could possibly obtain a young plant. I have been chasing one for several years since I was forced to retire as a result of my military service. Tropicals are my consuming passion, I have a jade vine and several other tropicals growing on my property and have had a space reserved for a Macuna bennettii for ages. I would appreciate any assistance you may be able to give me and of course if I can assist you in any way I would be only to happy to. I will be in Cairns travelling to Marbuiag Island in the Torres stait in April to visit my son who is a teacher there if that would help. If you would sell me one please just let me know and I will send the nessecary by return mail.

    Regards
