Purchased Meyer Lemon Tree and clamondrinn Orange.

Hi everyone,

I purchased a Meyer Lemon tree and clamondrinn orange tree from fastgrowingtrees website around November. They almost went missing during shipping. But after 9 days in transit. I finally received them. I live in Canada, and when I received them, it was below freezing outside. When I opened the packages, most of the leaves were halfway yellow.

Both trees came in a fairly fast draining soil. When I water them water drips freely immediately from the bottom. I would say very roughly 50% of the water i pour in comes out right away.

I have both trees in a southern facing sliding patio door. But there isnt much sun here even during the day. Thats why I purchased a 600 watt MH light, that I run about 15 hours a day.

I water both trees when I feel the top layer of soil is dry. Which is approximately 4-5 days.

It is inside the house around the kitchen. Temperature is constant 70 degrees. Humidity is around 50% with central humidifier.

I have started foliage pro 2 weeks ago. at half strength. Which is 1ML per Gallon of water. I am watering about 3/4 gallon of water per tree per watering.

The meyer lemon's leaves have not improved in color. Its mostly yellow greenish. There hasnt been any leave drop either. The tree has stayed in stasis since I received it. Not a single new leave or stem has grown. Except - in the last week, almost 50 bulbs appeared on the tree everywhere. The bulbs have a purple color to them. None of them has turned to flower yet. None of them has dropped either.

On the Calamondrinn. leaves are now mostly green. There is single new cluster of leaves growing. The tree had a few oranges on it when I received it. These oranges went from green to now orange colored. And same as the Meyer lemon, there is now 50+ new bulbs, flowers. yesterday one of the flower petal fell off and revealed a new orange inside. When I received this tree, there was a very mild layer of white powdery stuff on it. I wiped it off w clean water several times and it always came back, but in smaller and smaller quantities.

Could somone knowledgeable please help me and point out, or comment on my whole progress so far? What to look out for, what I am doing right / wrong. Are the trees growing no leaves, holding on to yellow leave but flowering like mad a good thing?

I have gritty mix available on hand. Should I repot them now?

Why am I getting no new growth?

Thanks !

Your trees look nice to me. When the flowers set fruit I would break most of them off so the tree puts most of its energy into roots. I would not worry about the foliage. As long as you have green leaves they are making food for the tree. The leaves probably won't green up but when they leaf out the new leave will start as pail green and darken up. My trees take about a month to darken up and my shoots that started 2.5 months ago are growing so slow they won't be dark green till spring. You can see the pail 2.5 month old growth in the picture below.

    TorontoNick,

I think you'll be fine. Those look to be fine trees. You'll find that the Meyer Lemon will try to produce fruit over making new leaves. I'm serious... if you had a leafless meyer lemon tree, it would shoot out a bud before a leaf.
Meyer lemon trees like to have a pretty consistent amount of light.

The calamondin... basically bullet proof. When I put my tree outside during the summer it gos crazy. Then in the winter when I bring it in it'll drop about 1/2 the leaves. But I don't supplement any light. I'm not to passionate about the fruit.

Thanks everyone for the reassurance. I was just a little concerned that after a month, there isnt any new foliage growth. And I thought that blooming flowers are a sign of stress.

I guess we will wait and see. I will update with pictures after a while. Lets see what these bubs turn into. Hopefully everyone of them turns into lemons and oranges.

Update: both trees are in full bloom. There are 50-100 buds on each tree. But still no new foil age growth.

    A few question:
Should I up to full dose of foliage pro? I am watering every 4-5 daysï¼Âthat's when the soil layer start to feel dry

Should I repot now into the gritty mix or wait?

Do I have to manually pollinate these two trees? I have been doing it w a q tip.

re-potted my trees in fall from 1 gallon pots to 5 gallon buckets. These buckets were much to big for my small trees so I set up a vacuum chamber to suck the extra water out after watering them. I also use the same to aerate the roots. By spring they had filled the 5 gallon buckets and I planted the one in a 30 gallon barrel and the other 2 trees I planted in ground under a lean-to cold frame/greenhouse.

If you up size your pot you will have to aerate the roots and keep them warm and the rest of the plant growing

    {{gwi:557507}}
My trees tripled/Quadrupled in size over the winter in this box.

Ha, nice one steve! I think my wife would kill me if I setup a vacuum in the kitchen.

Is the gritty mix alone not enough to aerate the roots and drain the water?

I want to repot them now but i dont want it to suffer a repot shock as they are flowering like crazy right now.

You will probably be OK, but you have to keep the plant growing with plenty of light. The roots must stay warm. The amount I up-sized my pots would have killed most trees without the extra heat, light, and work. Choose a pot about 2 to 4 inches larger diameter and that much deeper. When you water you can put the suction chamber under the plant in a sink. Its about 3 to 4 blasts of 10 seconds each to do the job. Generally people wait till spring warmth to pot up. It is safer then.

You can pull the trees from there containers to see If the roots are wrapped. If so you can trim the roots and pot up to a volume increase of around 30%.

OK. I will repot soon. There are soo much new growth now on the tree. I guess this repot will kill or stunt it all huh.

    Nick.

    Do not re-pot now.

You are right to think that those leaves are very yellow, and that it's an indication that something is amiss.

Sometimes, too much fertilizer will cause a plant to yellow, but I can't tell if that's the case without knowing what was in the potting mix. Certainly, a 1/2 teaspoon of Foliage Pro won't cause foliage yellowing - that I do know, since I've used up to 3 teaspoons in a gallon of water.

I recommend that you try a full strength dose, once a week. The Meyer Lemon may require even more, being such a hungry plant that it is. Just remember to keep watering thoroughly so that the fertilizer excess is flushed.

    I'll up the fertilizer.

Here's a picture of the potting mix.

Here's a shot of some of the new flowers. There is like 50 of them

I'll try the full strength 5ml foliage pro per gallon of water.

Does it matter how much water I use per watering? Because if I don't use up the full gallon then I haven't put in the 5ml.

Theres still no new foliage growth on the Meyer lemon. Only flowers. Leaves have stayed the same yellow since I got this tree.

However the orange tree is now growing new flowers and foliage everywhere. I will attach a shot

Orange tree. Lots of new growth

    Just an update,

the orange tree is flushed with new flower and foilage growth.

The lemon tree has a lot of flower that turned fruit. But there is still no foilage growth and the leaves on there right now is still yellowish. Started the 5 ml foilage pro last watering. I guess we will have to wait for a bit longer to see if there are any changes.

Question about the fertilizing of full strength 5ML foliage pro.

I am watering every 3-5 days. Should I be giving the trees 5 ML every time I water? which is every 3 -5 days??So 5ML every 3-5 days? that seems like a lot.

Also, I give 5ML per gallon of water, but what if I dont use up the full gallon of water? Am I not giving less then 5 ML?

    Someone help me. =)

Your plants arnt sitting there with a calculator. What 5ml per gallon is supposed to do is give your plants water with the nutrients at a certian ppm. It's the ppm not ml that really matters.

When you water how much run off are you doing?

Please explain to me why your first post lists half strength as 1ml and full strength as 5ml. That doesn't sound right.

Your reflector is 90 degrees off. You have the narrow light pattern over the plants and the wide one hitting the closet door and out into the room.

I am not sure what run off means. When I pour in half a gallon of water into the container, about 50% of it comes out bottom. Which I dump away.

Please explain to me why your first post lists half strength as 1ml and full strength as 5ml. That doesn't sound right.

Well I was on the maintenance plan which according to the bottle suggested 2ML every watering. So cut that in half, I did 1ML.

Greenman suggested a full strength dose, which is 5ML per week production plan according to the bottle.

My question is if its 5ML per week, and I have to water every 3-5 days then what should I give? lol.

Your reflector is 90 degrees off. You have the narrow light pattern over the plants and the wide one hitting the closet door and out into the room.

the reflector came like that. And the part immediately under the light is the brightest spot according to my eyes. Is there some kind of modification I am suppose to make?

If you're watering at day 3, use 2-3ml....if you're watering at day 5, use 5ml.

Instead of the vents facing left and right they should face forward and back. You can cap them wih aluminum foil and take the glass out to keep the light from being a nuscence that comes out the vent. You could easily give that 3rd tree light instead of the closet door.

I made the same mistake years ago. The reflector makes light in a rectangle shape not a square and the rectangle of light isn't over the rectangle of plants "the 3 trees in a row"

I am semi impressed with the trees you got. I've ordered many things from FGT, and while their customer service is exemplary, their plants that I've received are not. Every single one I get is in bad shape, at least 50% of the leaves are horridly damaged, burned, eaten or gone. The trunks are always so thin they can't stand on their own. Just shoddy product in general.

Those trees look very good. If they're growing so much, you're definitely doing something right!

    pip313,
Now I definitely see what you are saying about the orientation of the light. I agree it would give more light if it was oriented your way. I would have to redrill some holes in the ceiling to get this fixed. Problem is this light is in the kitchen / dinning room. It would kinda look not as nice if I changed it. Maybe I will have to live with it. Gonna think about this.

That 3rd tree is a pachira, Ya think it would benefit much from a 600w MH? Would it burn it any?

    Cfox,
Oh no, when I received these trees, they were in awful shape! just like what you described. Half of the leaves were eaten by bugs, the other half was kinda yellow. Its just the orange tree made a full recovery and growing everywhere. While the lemon tree has stayed that semi yellowish color. It has baby lemons now all over, but absolutely zero new leaf.

Greenman Josh. I will start on that fertilizer dose and report back on its status in a month or so.

I just wanted to post an update:

The lemon tree seems to be in a stage of stasis. The leaves are not getting any greener, or yellower. I had started as Josh suggested on the 5ML dose. But that doesnt seem to be making any difference.

I hated the nursery soil it came in. Last week, I decided what the heck and just repotted it into the gritty mix. I have repotted other plants before without any negative effects on the plants. So that gave me a bit of confidence.

I barerooted the lemon tree. Rinsed up pretty much all of the previous soil mix. I didnt notice any roots coming off or getting damaged. So hopefully it will be okay.

its been 5 days now since the repot. I guess this tree just wont react to anything I do to it. haha Still the same. Didnt get better, not getting worse. Certainly no leaf loss or yellowing. No new foilage either.

Lastly, I decided to just remove all the lemons that had formed on it. There must have been 30 or more. Hopefully this will also help it. (okay I left one. The biggest one). =)

I will update again in a while.
