Continuing the theme for 2015- need a new rug

Seems like there are many rug seekers these days! I am looking for an entry rug. Currently we have a carpet remnant from install a year and a half ago. It was meant to be temporary. You know how that goes. Anyway, our entry is small. Very small. I like color and would like some sort of traditional Persian/Turkish/Oriental in style rug. The runner on the stairs is a wool sisal-like carpet bound in black. Doors are dark brown. Wallpaper is a damask that will be replaced one day but not anytime soon. The max dimensions for a rug are 3-3.5'x6-6.5'. That would leave a small border of hardwood.

Big question is what colors should I be seeking? Many I have seen are a majority red. Not sure that's what I want. The adjacent rooms are a pink living room and a gray dining room. Thoughts? Here are pics of the space:

Thank you!!

    I'd go for rust.

mamorella, rust in Persian carpets is gorgeous, IMO. This rug is rust and light blue.

    It is wool.

tib, I do like it. I think sizing is going to be an issue though. I really want to cover as much as possible and it seems like most of the rugs come in 3x5, which is too small, or 4x6, which is too wide. Ugh. This is going to take a while!

The dimensions you need sounds like a classic case for getting carpet cut to size.

sas, agree. That would be easiest. I've lived with it this long so I will search for a bit before conceding!

What are the actual dimensions of that area, from the bottom of the bottom stair to the wall across from it, and from baseboard to baseboard in front of the door?

4' x 7'3". I figured 3' would be a minimum and assumed that doesn't take into account any fringe, although I am not sure of that.

Here's a nice one, and it says that 'custom sizes are available'

If you are looking for Persian/Oriental rugs, then I would try an actual Oriental Rug store. Most of the rugs will come in off sizes. For example, one of my rugs that is "at camp" getting repaired is 2'4"x4'5". Just go in, tell them the colors you like, the area's size, photos (from your phone) of the adjoining rooms, and they'll be able to show you some things that may fit your space (and budget).

You could also layer a smaller rug on a sisal, or just put a sisal there. There are a couple of online dealers that let you customize the size of rug you'd like. I'd be happy to share the name of one that I used if you decide to go that route.

tib, that is a nice one too, although I like your first one best!

hsw, I love sisal and have a few in the house. I was hoping for something with a bit more color, but the idea of layering is a good one too. I just have to make sure the door will clear it when open. I have been looking at ebay and eruggallery (where I have ordered from before) and there are many options but none seem to be the coloring that will suit the space. I should go into a store though. Thanks!

Mamorella, call Safavieh and ask if that rug can be made in a custom size.
