How to get your old gw username (and other tips)

Thought I'd start a thread with some tips for the new system (Please add yours :) )

1. Getting your old username to display. Go up to "Your Houzz", click edit profile, and put your username where it says "first name." If you garden, you can put your zone in "Last Name."

My Houzz account was the same username as I had in GW, but linked to a different email. This made all of my GW history appeared to have been created by oldbat2be_GW.

I don't know whether this helped but it seems to have.

    1) I changed my Houzz email address to my GW email address

    2) Then contacted Tamara and asked her to update my GW threads (or maybe just the profile?) from oldbat2be_GW to just oldbat2be.

    3) I click the confirmation link on Houzz.

To edit your post, look for a tiny grey pencil at the top right hand of your post. For the starting post to a thread, the pencil is at the bottom of the post.

You can attach up to four photos to a thread.

My user name was already taken on houzz, but was able to add numbers on the end. I'm now patty_cakes42. ;)

To control the email onslaught, go to Your Houzz, Edit Profile, then Advanced Settings.

To get to the newest (bottom) comments, press the comment button below the first post.

To find all of your posts and replies go to YOUR HOUZZ click on that top right, your new page will open, there are options, ideabook, bookmarks, activity... click on activity to see your various posts.

Bookmarks here is your GW clippings if you had them.

To find the lists of GW home and garden forums click on Advice top right and there on the left you will see the GW forums listed as Home and Garden click those to find your desired forums.

If you have a favorite forum it is a good idea to create a fave for it on your browser so it is easy to get to. Also on the main page of any of the forums at the top left will be the GW forums listed again as Home and Garden directly below the Houzz discussions option.

ugh. I didn't want my usernames to be connected in both sites. Seems inevitable. dislike!

I have a question about profile pictures and feel like an idiot because I can't figure this out!! I'm trying to use a picture of my old house and it only allows a narrow horizontal band of the house to show. The corner arrows that come up in the preview do not allow me to make the view-able picture larger, I can only move that narrow band up or down the picture. What am I missing?

Dlm, there are two pictures - a little square one and a longer narrow one that's quite a bit bigger (on my profile the little one is my face and the long one is a sunset). Try clicking on the little one to the left to upload a photo instead of the big one.

OMG - thank you robo - I really do feel like an idiot. Why on earth didn't i see that? Duh. I'm so discombobulated with this new site - can you tell ??!!

I couldn't change my Houzz username to my GW username. When I tried to edit it, I got a message saying it was already taken! So, I did what I've noticed other GWers doing. I added gw to the end of my original GW name.

Annie deignaugh posted this in another thread and I think it's super important so I copied it here:

Annie Deighnaugh I think it's really important for anyone posting photos in houzz that you understand you are giving up your rights to that photo...they can do whatever they wish with it once you give it to them...."...post photos or comments, send any messages, submit any ideas or feedback, or otherwise participate in any Houzz forum, you acknowledge and agree that any postings, messages, text, photos, audio/visual works, information, suggestions, feedback, reviews or content provided by you (collectively, "Content") may be viewed by the general public and will not be treated as private, proprietary or confidential, and you authorize us and our affiliates, licensees and sublicensees, without compensation to you or others, to copy, adapt, create derivative works of, reproduce, incorporate, distribute, publicly display or otherwise use or exploit such Content throughout the world in any format or media (whether now known or hereafter created) for the duration of any copyright or other rights in such Content, and such permission shall be perpetual and may not be revoked for any reason."

I feel like an idiot. My gw name was Holly-Kay. I just want to delete my gw and houzz account and can't figure out how to do it. If anyone can help me please give me instructions I can follow so I can delete. I am going to miss all of my great friends here but the writing is on the wall. This is not at all a user friendly site now that houzz is involved. I have spent several hours now trying to get my picture off and since I can't figure this out easily the best thing is to delete my accounts.

Thanks, maybe that's why I now have to host my pictures here instead of linking to them...

Holly Kay - go to Your Houzz, up in the top right. Click on edit profile. Then click on the smaller photo to the left (your photo). You can delete or replace it with something else (you can click on the photos below to see more)

Thanks jdez, I was just searching for that option! (For holly Kay)

Thanks Robo and jdez. I finally figured out the name and was able to get my gw name because of Robo. I will hang out and see if I can get the hang of it.

    Yay!! Holly Kay!

A little Polaroid shows up on the far right of the topics list if a topic has pictures inside.

You're not getting your GW name back. You're only changing what people see. That name, if already taken by a Houzz person, belongs to them. Just a word of caution. Don't be fooled, and don't be surprised when you come across versions of "you" in other threads.

Just wanted to say thanks Robo and others who have taken the time to help us navigate this maze. I won't have time until Friday to try to figure most stuff out, but your advice has already gotten me to a point where I can log in and set my privacy. Small steps.

Very true rob333...this will only get your old username to display but your profile remains linked to your new name. Also you can change your display name any time.

Does anyone know how to get to my trade list? Thank you.

Clarification question. Is "You can attach up to four photos to a THREAD." really mean per thread, or per post. If your insert 4 photos in your original post, is it possible or not to post additional photos in replies?

I always found it easier to upload from the computer, so was allowed only one photo per GW post. So four photos per post would be an upgrade for me; four per thread, not.

YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR DISPLAY NAME AT ANYTIME????? Boy that sounds like a recipe for disaster if someone wants to play nasty games, doesn't it? I know none of our regular nice GW peeps would do that but the ability to stir a pot and create trouble is super easy if someone can keep changing their name. Something to think about.

You can change the display name, but if you change it again all other posts are tied into it so I think it would come back and bite somebody.

ahhh - good point. Lessens that possibility for sure - thanks.

Just saw this on Lyfia's thread - you can change the way you view the forum, it will not only give you a thumbnail but also the most recent comment on the thread. Cobbled this together from a couple of screenshots...

It looks like you have to make that choice each and every time you view a thread, then go back to the forum page. It seems to revert automatically to the 3 bars, doesn't it?

For me it seems to be sticking? Maybe I have maximum cookies enabled or something.

From what I understand, the "edit" feature works only for a time and then you cannot go in later and make changes or remove photos.

@gyr_falcon, in the houzz FAQ section listed at the bottom of the page it says:

"You can include up to four photos **in each post or comment** on Houzz."

Thank goodness. Limiting us to four photos per thread would be awful!

hmmm.... robo I don't know - doesn't stick for me -- maybe a browser issue?
Thought of another thing but you can't fix it for me!! I wish there was a way to have the pictures we post appear larger - even if we had to click to enlarge them. Edited to add - this is really going to be an issue on the Building a Home forum where we're trying to look at pictures of blueprints and read the notations on dimensions etc. It's not ideal for getting a good look at a room pic in decorating but it's deadly on the building forum :-(

I think for building a home, the best thing to do would be to include a link to the original (e.g. photobucket) photo.

You know I'm going to have to pay you a retainer, robo - you are now my personal GW/Houzz IT person !!

So here's my next question..... if you go to the Houzz home page, how do you find the forums, whether it's the GW topics or the Houzz topics? I get here because the links I have in my favorites get me here but I know sometimes the unthinkable happens and computers crash, info is lost. If I go to the Houzz home page as I did when the announcement was first made but the switch hadn't happened yet, I can't find anything that even hints at forums here. What if.... ? How do we get back here?

Thank you mudhouse. it did sound more correct being per post. Whew.

Dlm - up at the top right it says "Advice": click that and you have your choice of either old Houzz or old Garden Web fora.

Never in a million years would I have looked there. Advice = Forums? I would think of that as Advice = Help or FAQ. Again, thank you. I think they have some nomenclature issues to iron out!!
