Thanks for your input! Yes, it is 3cm not inches. I called to confirm dimensions and what do you know- there was a "typo". It went from 105 square feet to 97, but the subcontractor said that the price wouldn't change. His price is his price. Sounds pretty sketchy to me.

That does sound sketchy as most fabricators charge by the square foot. With the square footage you are listing above at a stone cost of lets say $50 a square foot you should be saving $400. Are you in a large area where you could obtain other quotes?

Yeah, there are a number of subs in the area that provide stone. Hopefully my builder will have a recommendation.

It could be that by reducing by 8 sqft from 105 to 97 the fabricator still needs to purchase the same number of slabs and make the same number of cuts. Some of the stone fabricators I have dealt with in the past would give a ballpark price/sqft and then when it comes to the actual measurements & a precise quote they would factor in how many slabs they actually need so the price could suddenly jump. Sometimes adding a small additional area can mean a whole additional slab is needed & if that isn't a common colour they may opt to charge you for the whole thing ... whereas if it's a more common colour they may anticipate being able to use the left overs on another job. I am not saying this is right or wrong, just that some companies may opt to work this way and that is a business decision which may work or may back-fire.

Yes, I see what you're saying Advent and I want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but it sounded like they weren't taking those things into account—that had just got the number wrong, which in my mind says the price should be different.
